Limiting to one per director (otherwise it'd be all Kurosawa and Melville) my favorite films in the collection are:
1) Seven Samurai 2) RoboCop 3) Army of Shadows 4) Fighting Elegy 5) The Double Life of Véronique 6) In the Mood for Love 7) House 8) Naked Kiss 9) The Sword of Doom 10) Repo Man Now, my favorite releases (taking into account both the film(s) and extras) are: 1) Zatoichi 2) The Complete Mr. Arkadin 3) Seven Samurai 4) The Essential Jacques Demy 5) Vampyr (1st edition with the book) 6) Fanny and Alexander 7) Six Moral Tales 8) Godzilla 9) Repo Man 10) The Night of the Hunter I also want to mention Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist box set, which doesn't really have any great films in it, but it is a great, and important, release. |

Having just watched Ball of Fire for the first time, I have to say it'd be nice if Criterion got their hands on this. Surprised I had never heard of it before. A Howard Hawks film penned by Billy Wilder? Fortunately it lived up to expectations. Remarkably clever and witty, it never takes a false step (I kept dreading a moment in which it would), and Barbara Stanwyck is absolutely phenomenal.
Would love it if Criterion released this, as the transfer I saw wasn't the best. |

Even if he was around, he'd probably not be involved. He was certainly still around when Robert Harris did the first restoration in 1991, and declined to be a part of it.
He never considered Spartacus as one of his movies. He thought of himself as just another hired hand. |

I ordered a copy from this seller a few days ago, and it's currently in transit. I normally wouldn't have been interested, but the price was so low ... then, when I read about it on the Criterion website, I thought I might as well check it out. The idea that the film might have been inspired by the atomic bombing of Japan kind of intrigues me, especially since I've been cycling through WWII films laterly, including Ken Burns' The War and the newly released Unbroken. |

Great post and I agree with everything you said. Between this film, The Lady Eve, and Meet John Doe, Stanwyck really had a banner year in 1941. I would love to see Criterion license the rights to all the Samuel Goldwyn classics, including Bulldog Drummond, These Three, Come and Get It, Stella Dallas, Wuthering Heights, The Westerner, Ball of Fire, etc., etc., etc. They've always been shuffled around and neglected like the proverbial red-headed step-child. (My apologies to any of you who may actually be red-headed step-children.) I had such great hopes when Warner Brothers brought The Best Years of Our Lives and The Bishop's Wife on blu-ray ... but then everything else started being re-released on DVD only. It's a travesty! ![]() |

I just saw The Westerner for the first time a yr ago and it was terrific. Would look great on Blu-Ray. Walter Brennan stole the show.
