I can see what you mean, but it's never been my favorite film of the set.

I honestly didn't like Easy Rider until I saw it last night, but I now think of it as a phenomenal movie. The film feels incredibly real and relevant in the context of when it was made. You have the emergence of stereotypes, the rise in the drug use, and the whole road feel where the characters are learning more about themselves in their interactions with others. Most importantly, though, it just feels very countercultural and anti-authoritarian.

The Last Picture Show, as well, feels very relevant for the time it was made. It very much appeals to the rising teen culture by highlighting a coming-of-age, sexuality, the Vietnam War, and the dying of an era.

Having just rewatched Five Easy Pieces tonight, I do admire the film but I don't get the same vibes from it as I do the others. Many see the character of Bobby as angst with the direction of the world, but I feel as if he's just confused because of how his life panned out with his family. Although the culture clearly has an impact on him, his issues seem more rooted in his family history. Furthermore, I feel as if he's bi-polar than just lost with society.

So after watching L'Avventura, I can't get enough of these Italian women from the 60s. Monica Vitti is so sexy in this. I need to get La Notte and L'Eclisse to complete the trilogy.

Well, this is not a Criterion release, but for anyone interested Network has released The Nightcomers with Marlon Brando this month, which is like a "prequel" to Criterion's The Innocents.
So, you may want to check this out if you loved the latter.

Enjoy

There are a few French imports, but they are favorites (Adjani, Ogier, Marceau )

How good is it compared to The Innocents? Never heard of it but Innocents is incredible cinema, genuine creepy scenes, no tacky special effects, tension and great acting... And stunning cinematography!

well, of course it's inferior. But still interesting to watch at least once, and see the events that led to The innocents.
I don't remember it well (have seen it 2-3 years ago), but I don't remember being especially shocked.

I think of all the technical considerations, the best element is the music:

I would like to add my voice to the choir of praise for Ride The Pink Horse. I watched it last night and have the urge to revisit it again already.

Watched L'Eclisse last night. The fact that it has very little plot was unimportant. I could watch her for an hour just reading a book. It was surprising to see her painted black and dancing around like a native Kenyan. She's simply mesmerizing.

I haven't seen the first two, only Easy Rider, but you have a point with The Last Picture Show. Easy Rider, on the other hand, while OOP, is at least out there from Sony with an identical transfer, the other two don't have individual releases when they probably should.

I'm working my way through the David Lean Directs Noël Coward set in between rewatching America Lost and Found: The BBS Story and Zatôichi: The Blind Swordsman, and I am really impressed.

The description of In Which We Serve makes it out to sound a bit dull, but I think the flashback sequences are phenomenal and make the film really personal in terms of how families were split by war. Furthermore, This Happy Life was just...wow...one of the most ironic titles of a film because it is so incredibly depressing yet somber in its story. It's a really heartbreaking film that reminded me much of 1956's Giant. I hear both Brief Encounter and Blithe Spirit are better than the other films in the set so I can't wait to get to them.

I'm always taken aback when I realize how fast Lean hit his stride as a director. To me he has probably the most consistently great filmographies of anyone.

I've only seen a few of his films, but I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the Criterion set, Doctor Zhivago, and A Passage to India.

I remember seeing the introduction of Oliver Twist in a film class, so I'm looking forward to getting around to the Charles Dickens films in the future, as well.

A Passage to India is phenomenal. So is Zhivago, but I do have some issues with the story (not his fault).

Lean has such an amazing filmography and Doctor Zhivago and A Passage To India surely won't disappoint. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations IMO are the finest adaptations to film of any Dickens novel.

I hope Criterion jumps on the multi-package thing and releases (upgrade to blu) Lean's directorial interpretations. Wouldn't it be cool if they did release a box set of both films? We can dream. Well, even if they just release them seperately is fine by me.

I have to assume you forgot that The Muppets Christmas Carol exists.

Muppet Christmas Carol is so, so good, definitely my favorite version of that story. Second place is the Peter Cushing vehicle "Cash on Demand," which is a very loose adaptation and also excellent. I would take either over any of the versions of his other works, but I am a philistine.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I thought the Zemeckis CGI version of a Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey was surprisingly good. I had sort of expected a dud, but it really hit home on most levels imo.

Le Silence de la Mer Blu-ray REVIEW

The release uses French label Gaumont's restoration of Le silence de la mer. The supplemental features are outstanding. In addition to Melville's directorial debut, 24 Hours in the Life of a Clown (featuring a very smart puppy ), there are two excellent documentary films. The older one, Code Name: Melville, is really good. There are some terrific interviews with veteran Hong Kong director Johnnie To, German director Volker Schlöndorff, etc.

Even if you already have Eureka's release, definitely consider adding this release to your collections

Have a great week everyone.
