Watched Carnival of Souls on Criterion DVD this past weekend, and wow, this is such a great little gem of a film! It would be nice to see it upgraded to Bluray one of these days. Any fans?

Not a huge fan but yeah. I caught it on TCM last year (around Halloween, maybe? Bill Hader might have been doing the introductions that night too) and while I wouldn't go too far out of my way for a BD I wouldn't mind having it on my shelf. |

Incidentally, that film also stars John Mills who also starred in Great Expectations (come on Criterion, upgrade is long overdue). Mills IMO was a bit too old for the role of Pip but that's another topic. |

I received my copy of Godzilla this morning, and it is indeed a brand new copy of the Criterion blu-ray. Quite a bargain, I think! |

Yesterday i finally watched my copy of Satyricon and i am not sure what to think of it, i didn't totally hated it, but i didn't like that much either, certainly not sure why it got so much praise even from Fellini himself saying is one of his most accomplished works.
I thought it would be a much more loose film, this clearly follows a narrative and feels more like a Pasolini film like Medea or Oedipus Rex, just with less explicit sex, and also not as funny as his Trilogy of Life, i am not a fan of those Pasolini films so that may be my problem, but i didn't see what was so Felliniesque on this one, the odd thing is don't even remember noticing Nino Rota score which always adds a lot to the experience of Fellini movies for me, I thought Roma is infinitely better, and has all the things i come to expect from his films. Will probably watch all the extras and see it once more down the line before deciding what to do with it. Last edited by pedromvu; 03-30-2015 at 07:24 PM. |

Also watched another of my blind buys Saturday, it was The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant this one lived up to my expectations, but i probably still rank Ali: Fear of the Soul a bit higher, still in terms of themes i thought this was pretty unique, the acting was top notch and the cinematography amazing and with enough variations for such a limited space and considering the whole film occurs in that room.
Was thinking i will probably need to re-watch World on a Wire, i loved the cinematography in that one, but i thought the performances were very stilted and the pace too slow, maybe i just wasn't used to his films since it was my first. |

I've been browsing around Reddit out of boredom and I came across these two threads. Hmm...make of them what you will, I guess.

![]() And one note: A member PM-ed me to let me know that Criterion's site lists: "A booklet featuring an essay by critic Geoffrey O’Brien and a selection from Rui Nogueira’s 1971 book Melville on Melville." The second part "a selection from Rui Nogueira’s 1971 book Melville on Melville" is not included with my press materials. But maybe they were prepared earlier and this was something that was just added up. I am going to check. Also, when the final market version of this release arrives, I will update the review with photos (so that people can see what is in the leaflet/booket).
