In other news, i was just reading at criterionforum that this:

might have turned out to be: ILL, SORE POSSUM, meaning Il Sorpasso , thats got to be a stretch right? are we still waiting for Midnight Cowboy to turn out?
I was never convinced the clue was for Midnight Cowboy.

I'm pretty sure it's OOP, and from what I've read it's just ok, not the greatest (I may be wrong). Thus, I would appreciate a Criterion upgrade.

So the only thing they would've been able to upgrade was the PQ, and they felt it wasn't enough of an upgraded "package" to warrant spending the money on it.

Same could hold true of Spartacus. Typically the Criterion uses a different transfer or director's cut as opposed to the regular disc. As long as Universal does right by the 4k restoration, I don't see a Criterion release being that important — again, other than the extras, and there's no telling what would even be included on the Uni release at this point.
Just when I start to gather a small ray of hope, you go and kill it. (J/K) On the other hand you may be right. We at this time just don't know enough facts to warrant a Criterion upgrade or not. Either way I am looking forward to the new 4k scan.

Of course! That's it!

ILL because he has the thermometer and ice pack.

SORE because he has the bandaged tail.

POSSUM because he is a possum.

Outstanding!

I second this thought, presumably they are sitting on these. Night and the City and Brute Force as well.

Not at all! It will never happen, but I've been praying for them to release The Last Flight as one of their Warner pre-code selections! Maybe we should suggest they release The Last Boxset ...?

Out 1 is just generally brilliant news. I've got the German box-set, which is as good as I ever expected to see it. I never thought we'd see the day of it hitting Blu!
I'd love a comprehensive Blu-Ray set for Varda a la Rohmer, like the Tout(e) Varda DVD set.

Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie would be a mandatory inclusion!

I have the DVD and would love to upgrade it. Wasn't a really crisp movie to begin with IIRC, and the soundtrack isn't much either. It's just ... such a hypnotic film.

Another Weir film that is LONG overdue for a proper release is THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY. Have a Dolby Surround 2.0 track on VHS, but the DVD is 1.0. Pffft. Warner can bite me.

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, which I just bought at Costco.

LASERBLAST ??

LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD ... METRO ... COMMAND ... DAYS OF DISCO ... EMPEROR ... PICTURE SHOW..... I think you've got the makings of a set (and an interesting week of viewing).

Nah, they'd not have Z so soon after the others, as I believe it's still undergoing a restoration somewhere. Maybe end of the year or next year at the earliest.

Default Kieslowski's Blue

Hi all, question about Blue. I can find plenty of talk about the framing issue with Criterion's Blue vs Miramax's DVD, but has anyone discussed the drastically different color timings of the two? In the Miramax version, everything post car crash seems to be shot with a red filter or red tint, giving everything a flush, lively glow. There is no tint in the criterion version; if anything the scenes appear to be desaturated. This affects the storytelling tremendously, as Binoche seems pale and lugubrious throughout the movie in Criterion's version and in Miramax's she seems hopeful and ready to move on with her life. Has there been any discussion about this? (Googling "blue kieslowski red tint" obviously isn't helping me out.)

Here's what I want...

In a Lonely Place
Gilda
Le Samouraļ
Un Flic
The Killers
(both 1946 and 1964 versions)
Pickup on South Street
Curse of the Demon/Night of the Demon
Brute Force
The Naked City
Thieves Highway
Night and the City
The Brood
Until the End of the World
Stray Dog

The list of what I want and the list of what I'll get will likely be vastly different, but I won't mind a third quiet month in a row either, since I might be moving to a new place this summer.

I've talked about the transfer for Blue til I was Blue in the face, and it's one of the only emails I've ever sent to Criterion asking about. I didn't receive a response, and it looks like we may never really get a definitive answer. Considering the same transfer is on all existing blu rays it doesn't look good that it will be corrected anytime in the near future either. It's a shame because other than this issue, Criterion's release is stellar.

Er, the film's supposed to look very blue. The blue is meant to be the dominant color.
