One of Grindhouse's best releases for sure.

I think you are misunderstanding what is written

The difference, if there is any, will not count in small things like bitrates -- because it is entirely possible to have a release with higher bitrates that looks worse than a release with lower bitrates (with both sourced from the same master). Please understand that moving bitrates higher does not automatically produce a more "robust" (whatever the meaning some attach to this term is) release.

Ok, see my edit.

By the way, do you have an example of 2 different Blurays coming from the same master, and with the one having double the bitrate of the other, but the one with the lower bitrate winning?

Let me ask you a direct question:

Do you actually own these releases or do you go by what is posted on sites like Caps-a-holic? I know what the answer is.

And we very obviously disagree on the Thief release because I have screened both on a 100+ screen and seeing a difference is quite the fantasy trip.

But then again, the same people that are seeing sharper pixels are the ones that can't see obvious issues.

No, I don't keep a log with the exact numbers for different releases and certainly would not look exactly for double bitrates -- that is because I am yet to see a Criterion release that has "problematic" bitrates.

Instead, I would like to look for real issues, something that may or may not affect your viewing experience when you sit in front of your TV/ screen. Here, take a look at this shot:

What do you see? Let me give you a hint: Focus on the face on the right side of the frame.

If Criterion can rock out great transfers of Fanny and Alexander and Heaven's Gate on single-disc Blu-rays, then I am confident that both versions of The Killers will look great on one disc.

yes, you know the answer..
Well, even if I don't see it in motion I would like to buy the best available version.
(and in the screenshot comparison it's more than obvious to my eyes)
How do you know? I might want to grab screenshots of the film and make a large poster! Shouldn't I have the best version?

When I buy a T-Shirt, i don't want it to have a hole on it, even if it is in a place where noone can see it!
I hope that answers you.

You mean the first screenshot? i am not sure anything is wrong with the right side, but i do see a bit of compression issue on the face on the left (where the tone changes from dark to a lighter tone).

Upon closer looking, it might be my imagination , something looks a bit weird but not sure the cause.

OK, this is fine

If this is your preference, then so be it. The only reason I responded there was because there are absolute relationships that are made between certain details that are simply inaccurate.

Good talking to you

By the way, because you posted an Arrow screenshot:
I don't support or hate any company (well ok, except Disney - see explanation in signature). I just took some random examples that I knew of.

Nice talking to you too..

By the way, does anyone know where I can find a trailer for Here's your Life?
I can't find anything on the net! Strange.

Agreed. However, it's the newer more "popular" titles that sell well and keep Criterion able to release the more obscure titles that might not be as mainstream. At least that's all of his films, right, or is there still that Budapest one?
Do re-releases of blu-rays that cost over twice as much as the first release really sell like hotcakes? I would think these fabled mainstream audiences that are apparently buying all these Wes Anderson movies to fund Criterion are all just buying the much cheaper version when it comes to Mr. Fox, and probably would with this as well. I could definitely see the argument for everything pre-Mr Fox being a big seller for Criterion, since it all came out on Criterion first, but these re-releases don't seem like they would be better sellers than anything else they release since they'd only appeal to Wes Anderson die-hards who consider a few extra features worth the extra 10-20 bucks on top of buying the cheap version (which is more widely available besides, has a digital copy for those who care, and has had a multiple year head-start).

Possibly in for Hiroshima Mon Amour and The Killers, but definitely in for Moonrise Kingdom, even though I just bought the amaray.

And FYI, Moonrise Kingdom comes with a booklet for all you leaflet haters out there.
