I watched The River Blu-ray last night and I'm in awe of the transfer! It's one of the best Technicolor transfers I've ever seen.

Yes! I actually did a blind buy for the film and ended up loving it. It was out of the norm for me film-wise, but it was quite good.

I've seen Kwaidan and loved it.
While I do enjoy Kuroneko, Onibaba is definitely the more interesting film. The film is very atmospheric, and at times pretty unsettling. It's begging for a BD upgrade, I hope Criterion has one planned.

The Naked Island is really an incredible film. On Hulu, there are so many gems that need a release. I sadly don't think they will though. Just a feeling.

I think they will release Naked Island eventually. It has a nice MoC blu-ray already and is a well-loved film.

I agree about the Hulu catalog, some of those I would be ecstatic about if they put them on disc.

Seriously, I'd love a release of Onibaba and Kwaidan, but not before they release Grand Budapest Hotel!

The Naked Island is the best i have seen from Shindo, clearly better than both Kuroneko and Onibaba although quite different, more like a silent film, so i see no reason why they would not release it on blu.

P and P are a strange one for me. I love Colonel Blimp and A Matter of Life and Death, but am indifferent about The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus. I didn't dislike the latter two films at all. I thought they were very well made. I just didn't connect with the stories or characters.

That doesn't seem strange to me. I could probably count on one hand the directors whose entire body of work I consider great. I'd say 2/4 is pretty good.

This is a really good read. I'm going through it when I get a chance at work. Almost done!

I've only seen TRS and Black Narcissus. I liked the latter quite a bit, although it almost seems to skate along without much of a story until the fantastic final 30 minutes.

A pleasant surprise to come home to both The River and Eclipse 42: Silent Ozu. First time in forever that my items have arrived before release date.

I love love love love love The Red Shoes, but I was generally neutral towards Black Narcissus. Furthermore, I didn't particularly care for Colonel Blimp and I hated Peeping Tom, so?

Maybe i am the odd one, but i loved The Red Shoes (on a second viewing though), Black Narcissus, Colonel Blimp and Peeping Tom, and can't wait to see A Matter of Life and Death, hopefully on blu by Criterion.

I watched Tootsie for the first time on my Criterion blu-ray a few nights ago and also all the supplements over the following 2 nights. It's a very unusual film but the most interesting thing was how Dustin Hoffman was so emotionally affected by the character of Dorothy Michaels he played. In the interviews I watched of him talking about his character, he broke down several times regarding how he never understood how women felt if they weren't "beautiful" enough. And that whole theme of how "a man can be a better man by being a woman" was fascinating and how director Sydney Pollack was inspired by that idea. I also never knew that Hal Ashby was supposed to direct the film but nothing was explained in the supplements on why he didn't come onboard. I'm sure it would have been a more risky project and controversial film had Ashby directed Tootsie.

It's a pretty unusual film but thoroughly engaging for those that haven't seen it yet.

It's not a slam-dunk if you like black swan, that's for sure. I didn't like it even close to as much as some other Powells I've seen (ex Black Narcissus or especially Colonel Blimp). I wouldn't say it's for everyone but it's probably still one of the more accessible movies in the collection.
That's a pretty good assessment. It's a great film that not everyone will love.

I think you'll love A Matter of Life and Death. I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen at a classic movie theater when I was in college; it was screened as part of my Heaven, Hell, and a Judgment class.
