Gonna check out Nosferatu next I think.
You should check out Heart of Glass. Severely underrated in my opinion. Probably my favourite Herzog film.

It's perhaps worth noting that Code Name: Melville is also available as a supplemtent on the Studio Canal release of Le Cercle Rouge.

Le Silence de la mer is a film which means a great deal to me. It was the first film I delivered a lecture on, and is one I can still go back to again and again. I wish I could justify picking up the Criterion disc, but between the MoC release and the aforementioned SC Le Cercle Rouge the only difference in extras for me is the short (which I'm sure will show up elsewhere soon enough) and the interview with Ginette Vincendeau, which differs from the one on the UK disc. The Vincendeau-edited volume on Melville from the BFI (entitled An American In Paris) is well worth picking up by the way, it's a great read.

I've never been a spy or anything but that seems like a terrible code name.

Still, he must have known what he was doing...

Melville was his actual codename during the resistance. He was a big fan of the Moby Dick author.

I had a feeling something like that was going to happen.

Eating Raoul is my least favorite film in the Criterion Collection. And my least favorite film that I own. I just didn't get it at all.

I sold off my CC copy of Le Cercle Rouge prior to knowing that I'd go region-free. I was happy to see that this doc is on the Studio Canal UK release. Will have to pick it up some time. LCR is not my favorite Melville (it is somewhere in the middle of the pack,) but it's definitely worthwhile.

I'd act fast. The SC disc has been discontinued in the UK.

They might reissue it, but the range that it is a part of (the Studio Canal Collection) has been dropped over here. They've reissued a few of the titles in inferior editions, such as The Third Man and The Elephant Man, but so far there's been no sign of the Melville titles.

Criterion related...

I have decided to watch the Francois Truffaut collection in reverse chronology, so Finally, Sunday, his last film, was my first from the set.

I'd say that this film occupies the same space in Truffaut's canon as To Catch a Thief does in Hitchcock's filmography. Light, playful, nice to look at. Pretty good fun even if it isn't a 'great' film.

For now, it is only available via region B, but I thought that The Great Owl would really appreciate this one as it is a modern noir (shot in black and white,) while making a few artistic nods to Hitchcock.

Fanny Ardant also - She looks wonderful in black and white!

I stopped by a local used CD/used movie store on the way home from work and found mint-condition Criterion Blu-rays of Kes and World on a Wire on the shelf for $15 apiece.

As one might reasonably guess, these two Blu-rays subsequently migrated a few miles south from the store shelf to my shelf.

There was also a mint-condition Criterion Blu-ray of Fish Tank for $15 at the store, but the premise of that particular title doesn't really quicken my pulse. No disrespect to fans of that film, of course, but I'm just not feeling it.

That's quite a score!

Kes is up there with my favorite coming of age films. Beautiful film.

Fish Tank is also a good coming of age flick, just a different age and gender. At $15 I'd have snagged it, just to sell later if you don't like it. It's also an early Fassbender performance before he became a superhero.

It's weird but I never really thought about how similar Kes and Fish Tank really are. Not just in terms of subject matter or setting but also in terms of the various emotions they evoke.

Fish Tank wasn't quite as powerful as Kes but it wasn't far off and that's saying something because Kes was extremely moving.

Wait!....Owl, you have shelves? Have you finally taken your Criterions out of the bins and let them breathe? I'm just messin' with you.
