Criterion just posted a pic on Instagram of a Julian Sands interview. First couple comments speculated it was for an eventual Leaving Las Vegas release, but glancing at his IMDB page I also notice A Room With a View. Any chance they're bringing Merchant-Ivory back into the collection?

I would love a Criterion Room with A View, but I guess we can kiss Ivory goodbye of Criterion's list!

Mike Nichols tweeted a year or two ago that he was talking to Criterion about a 20th anniversary release of Leaving Las Vegas, so I guess it's finally happening.

A few days ago, I posted a User Review of the Twilight Time Blu-ray of The Only Game in Town, which stars the lovely Elizabeth Taylor as a Las Vegas showgirl approaching middle age and Warren Beatty as a compulsive gambler.

One sentence from my review that is relevant to this discussion...

"The Only Game in Town comes across almost like an earlier version of the 1995 film, Leaving Las Vegas, except that The Only Game in Town did not make me want to buy a gun and blow my own brains out after watching it."

I thought it was hinted in the last new year drawing via the window frame.

I dont know the directors work, but have heard great things - I will be buying this just for the incredible work gone into the restoration, as a bonus I will get 3 incredible film (it seems!).

Honestly, I don't think the way the New Year Criterion newsletters are framed matters.

Well, it was the only drawing they've done that was specifically looking out a window, so anything could be a clue.

Indeed. A truly phenomenal effort, can't wait to see the results. The greatest trilogy in film history deserves nothing less.

Everything in the drawing counts. They wouldn't frame it like that otherwise. Most of the consensus this year was that the framing is A Room With a View and I think Julian Sands reinforces that.

Or maybe Boxing Helena is really coming!! Woot!!

Has everyone had a chance to see the trailer posted on this site about a week ago? The old DVD for Pather Panchali was a disaster. For me, THIS is the "event of the year." An absolute miracle is what it is.

Every time I've finished watching a Satyajit Ray film, I feel so proud and lucky that I married into this culture. Ray was a total bada$$.

I'm not convinced that they'll be able to mend fences with Merchant Ivory. As far as I know, the BBC Blu-ray of A Room with a View is still in print (at least, Amazon is still selling it fairly cheaply).

This may be silly...

But for the release of The Apu Trilogy - would you guys rather it be plastic case - or do you think it deserves more, a beautiful digipak with a nice booklet detailing the long process and other material to back up the films?

I personally feel plastic case won't do it justice and it will get lost among other Criterions - so much work has gone into this, it needs to stand out...

So yeah would you rather to be a plastic case or something bold and something you want to preserve?

Guess they could do both and offer replacement cases?

I don't mean the flimsy digipaks, something solid like Zatoichi, or even MoC's Mizoguchi set.

Did they Have The Friends of Eddie Coyle or Odd Man Out? Any titles that come to mind.

Plastic. The paper cases don't hold up, especially over time.
