might just be playing devil's advocate, but what portion of his filmography is so lousy? he was in a couple of "blockbuster" action films. so what? there are some other big name actors who appeared in those same movies.

He's been in quite a few B and C-list stinkers lately.

Why does everyone presume this? Some people just don't like the performance of certain actors - why categorise that person for doing so? Its pointless and wrong.

Yeahhhh im going to hate Nic Cage cause its so coooool, brb I'm gonna some awesome memes to share and show my hate cause I'm sooo cool.

Yeah whatever, wont share my opinion here again jesus.

Im not just doing it because its Nic Cage, There are many actors that I think are bad at what they do. Daniel Radcliffe for example, he is awful, he's wooden and just can't show emotion or connect with his character, he's just never believable... let me guess, you are going to say I'm one of this people that can't imagine him as anyone else but Harry Potter? well thats wrong cause I was never big on Harry Potter and never see him as that character.

I was excited to see a new restoration of elevator to the gallows at Cannes. Very excited to see if it will be out on criterion blu.

Been waiting years to buy the movie. Can't legitimize buying a DVD from a nearly 15 year old transfer now.

To me, he's just one of those actors who has a natural tendency to ham it up and if he's reined in then he's fine. John Travolta is another. A nightmare come true was both of them turned loose in Face/Off! The only actor I really don't like is Richard Dreyfuss.

I think that one of Nicolas Cage's best roles was in Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

Cage's role as corrupt drug-addicted cop was perfect for his particular brand of over-the-top intensity, and I'm hard-pressed to think of anyone else who could have played the part.

That was a pretty decent little film. Nicolas Cage's comparably impressive acting, Fairuza Balk in a police uniform, and even some iguana POV camera shots. Everything necessary for a movie.

No love for Cage as "Big Daddy" in Kick-Ass? I'm really not kidding. Sure, it's not up to the level of his work Adaptation or Leaving Las Vegas, but it was rather remarkable that he gave one of the most restrained performances in the film, when he could easily have gone in the same direction as he did in Vampire's Kiss.

They did that with Che:

Anyway, I've noticed that they haven't been doing digipaks for a while now. The last one I believe was Eraserhead, which could've been a specific request by Lynch himself.

Check out Season of the Witch, Left Behind, Tresspass, Knowing, Next, The Wicker Man etc...

Those aren't bad because they are 'just blockbusters,' those are just plain stinkers.

I get a Con Air of Face/Off or whatever, but he's been forced into making some real turkeys.

(I do think he's great in the right role and with the right direction. I thought he was tremendous in Joe just recently)

Criterion should be doing nothing but clear Scanavo cases because everything else looks terrible on a shelf.

Yes, please!! The cardboard digipacks and cardboard slipcase for The Complete Tati Collection is a huge blunder. The case holds all but the shorts BD and the booklet, or all the BDs, if you keep the booklet out, but cram them all in there and the slipcase swells, or digipacks get smushed. Someone did not learn "measure twice, cut once" from woodworking shop class.

I sure hope he's got enough houses and motorcycles and fancy watches because I'm frankly getting dead tired of seeing him several times a year in some filmmaking-by-numbers action flick... Not to mention those stinkers that I just can't imagine that even in a drunken state he'd think, "Yeah, that's a good project, it'll fit into my oeuvre,..." Kick-ass was an exception, I DID think he fit well into the ensemble. Really great with Chloe Moretz.

Here's one that got good reviews (well, not according to Rotten Tomatoes, but...)

Not even out on BD.

Lord of War (I'm a big Andrew Niccol fan) is another overlooked film. I'd love to see that get a Twilight Time or Criterion treatment. MOS DEF Rumble Fish. Been fascinated by that film since it came out. My prep school chum Gio Coppola did some fantastic 2nd unit work on it (had a cameo too).

Any list of best Nic Cage films is not complete without Valley Girl. Nic's greatest role, and in my dream Blu-ray world this awesome slice of the 80s gets released with a wacky C on the cover. Like, while that event might make some here think "gag me with a spoon", it would, like, totally make my world stop and melt

No, Digipaks look way better on a shelf and it's ridiculous they had a year where almost everything looked amazing and they're back to the usual average looking stuff.

In addition to what Edward said, Rage, Ghost Rider and its sequel, Bangkok Dangerous, Outcast, Stolen, Seeking Justice, Drive Angry, etc.

I'm not saying he's a terrible actor, I just think if he hadn't blown his money he'd probably be more selective in his choices of roles. Like others have pointed out, he's had some really good performances in addition to the crap.

Maybe Harvey Keitel? (Haha sorry, I had to.) Though I remember Keitel's performance being a bit more subdued than Cage's.

To be fair, Drive Angry is pretty great. Fichtner steals the show though.

Wicker Man deserves some special attention for being so terrible it's completely watchable and a ton of fun. The perfect attitude to enjoy Nic Cage, and the only sub genre he really deserves.

Werner Herzog or Abel Ferrara?

Pick your preference.
