They own the rights to Mamma Roma, but currently it is only available on DVD.

If you can go region free Eureka has released a few (Oedipus Rex, The Gospel According to Matthew, and Accattone) on blu-ray and they generally do pretty great work.

I came across a couple of used Criterions, and was thinking of making a blind buy. Would you guys go with Anatomy of a Murder or The Spy Who Came in From the Cold? I am a bit embarrassed to admit I've never seen Anatomy before lol.

You really cant go wrong with either of those.
Anatomy Of a Murder is a classic and Spy has grown to one of those films that I feel like watching pretty much every time I see it on my shelf.

It appears my order of The Third Man Criterion Blu-ray from Amazon was finally cancelled after a few months.

Some of you may remember that Amazon appeared to be selling it, brand new, at MSRP. I wonder if anyone actually received any copies.

Oh well. Wishful thinking, but worth a try. Will probably spring for the new StudioCanal remaster on Blu-ray and borrow the DVD version of the Third Man Criterion from my library to watch the extras.

After reading about the new Studio Canal version of The Third Man and the restoration process they've put the film through, I'm thinking I will be buying it once it comes out later this year...

I too had ordered The Third Man from Amazon and had them cancel my order after 6 weeks....I've also got on order the Carlos Saura Eclipse Flamenco set and Apt Pupil which I'm waiting for them to cancel too...

Holy cow, those are both awesome movies, and they're both beautiful Blu-ray transfers of black-and-white films.

I wrote User Reviews for both films that can be found in the User Review sections for each one.

I'd give the slight edge to Anatomy of a Murder because of its wonderful music, but they're both five-star titles.

Anatomy is so good, I'm on my 3rd copy.

Taped off of cable, onto VHS tape.
The UK DVD, because American only had a full frame, UK was 16:9.
Then finally, the Criterion Blu ray to be done once, and for all.

Cinematography, writing, acting, music, cast, Lee Remick !, a masterpiece all around.

The US DVD wasn't a P&S, rather a full frame 4:3. The widescreen version was framed by cropping at the top and bottom (as per the original intent, of course).

But of course, I misspoke. I was relaxing, feeling casual, and not on my toes about how the wrong term might have to be corrected ASAP, less someone go from here, mistaking " pan and scan " for " full frame." Oh, the horror I might have inflicted on one so innocent.
Full frame, yes.

I was lukewarm to The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and I absolutely love Anatomy of a Murder, so I'd go with that one.

In addition to all the wonderful things already said about Anatomy of a Murder, it should be noted that there are wonderful supporting performances from Eve Arden, George C. Scott and especially Joseph N. Welch.

Welch was the real-life attorney who famously asked Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" Here he plays a judge, and does so with truly remarkable aplomb.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Unfortunately, the decision was made for me, as Anatomy of a Murder was already gone. Though that may be a good thing, as I would have stood there for an hour debating the perceived merits of two films I've never seen lol.

Great reviews, Owl. I'm glad to see that The Spy Who Came in from the Cold isn't as gaudy or campy as the Bond films (I guess it really couldn't be without color lol). I'm interested to see how it compares with The IPCRESS File.

Whoa, looks like someone got majorly ticked off, and I can't fathom why. From what I understand, P&S is a selective cropping of an existing widescreen image to make it completely fit the 4:3 area of erstwhile TV's. In the case of AoAM, it is the opposite, the widescreen is a top & bottom crop of the originally captured 4:3 frame, which is fully shown in the US DVD.

I have put it at the top of my to-buy list. Another thing that has kind of picqued my interest in the film is subject matter relative to the time period it appeared. I'm always interested in watching films made during the transition away from the Hays code.
