So with the news about Day for Night and Before Sunset (from Before trilogy), can we finally assume that just because it is a Warner title it might not be released by Criterion?

Or are there any arguments about those being special cases like Badlands?

Are there any other titles already in the collection that are owned by Warner?

Unwrapped some recent releases and found this:

I knew they were coming, but I could not believe how excited I'd be to see booklets again.

From IndieWire:

Say what you will about Kristen Stewart, but she became the first American actress to win a César award for her performance in Olivier Assayas' "Clouds Of Sils Maria." Clearly, the collaboration was rewarding for both, and the two are reuniting on a new project.

Variety reports that Stewart will star in Assayas' "Personal Shopper." While the title might sound a bit bland, the premise is anything but. The English language movie will be set in Paris and is a ghost story that takes place in the fashion underworld. With Nicolas Winding Refn making a horror taking place in the world of modeling, are we seeing a new trend of auteurs skewering haute couture?

Anyway, this is one is moving fast with cameras slated to roll this fall. So will we see "Personal Shopper" at Cannes in 2016? I'd bet on it.
This sounds VERY interesting. Too bad it's going to be over a year until we get a chance to see it. I'm also seriously excited about Refn's The Neon Demon, mentioned in the article. That sounds utterly insane, and it stars Elle Fanning, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Des Harrington, Jena Malone, and more. I'm going to be all over that.

I may have missed out on getting Anatomy of a Murder used earlier this week, but I ended up stumbling upon a nice little cache of used CC stuff, and got a decent price on a new copy of The Wages of Fear (though I got a bad disc I'm still waiting to hear back from them about a disc exchange)

Just saw Ivan's Childhood last night, what a beautiful film. I really wish Criterion started releasing other Tarkovsky movies on blu-ray...

Had to make some screenshots for my website, check them out if you're interested...

Firstly, thanks a ton for those screens. The lighting in some (well, most) of those is just ... off the charts, really. It looks like an incredibly beautiful film.

Secondly, I'm sad to admit that the only Tarkovsky I've seen is Andrei Rublev and Solaris -- though, thankfully, I got to see both of them initially on the big screen. They are both very different, obviously. And I enjoyed both of them immensely, though I won't pretend that the intermission during Andrei Rublev wasn't welcome.

But I really do need to see more of his work.

Another Russian film with incredible scenery / lighting is Ballad of a Soldier. Even though it is only available in DVD it is just gorgeous. The forest scenes are the best.

Greetings, Criterion enthusiasts. My name is Bill, and I am relatively new to this wonderful niche within the greater cinematic universe. I thought I would introduce myself, as I am sure that I will be an active participant in this discussion. I am a lover of great motion pictures, and I know there are a plethora of visionary directors, and powerful films, I have not yet been exposed to. So, I am here to learn, and to interact.

My first Criterion experience came from watching On The Waterfront on Blu, and I absolutely loved both the film, and the attention to detail that Criterion paid to the Kazan masterpiece. I bought the film through Amazon as a member of Prime. It seemed like the perfect jumping in point, if you will. I've long been a fan of Brando, yet somehow, Waterfront had escaped me. Next up, I purchased The Last Emperor, but it came in a plastic case instead of the DigiPack I was expecting. I recall stumbling across something a while ago, but it seems I am in need of some clarification. My understanding is that Criterion are offering to send the plastic cases to people who originally had The Last Emperor in the DigiPack cardboard for $5; this does not include the booklet inside.

So, here's the question. Do they also offer this back the other direction? If I received mine in plastic, can I pay them to receive the DigiPack instead? For one thing, I like uniformity of appearance in my collection. If it's not possible, I'll probably just sell the one I have now used, and then bite the bullet, and search for a copy with the old packaging (which will, no doubt, be more expensive). More than anything, I guess I'm just a purist. When I started my blu ray collection in earnest just a few months ago, I didn't know what I wanted. Now that I'm cognizant of what's out there, I want to get the DigiBook packaging wherever possible. I take care of my collection, and if the option exists, I'd much rather be able to see (and feel) a great cover without a wall of plastic interfering with my enjoyment. It not only hinders the artistic presentation, but there's something to be said about the feel of a DigiBook, too. It's like the difference between a paperback book, and a leather-bound novel. There's a quality of appearance, and since I will display my movie collection, I'd rather buy the more appealing of the two.

Some guidance would be greatly appreciated!

My next addition will undoubtedly be A Brief History of Time. I've long been a great admirer of Professor Hawking, and watching The Theory of Everything on Friday evening reminded me there's more yet out there to be discovered. I have read his book multiple times. I love reading his lectures, and as I have never seen this documentary, it would no doubt be a wise investment.

Completely disagree. Crazy Clown Time was a fantastic video, and I also enjoyed his epilepsy-inducing music video for Nine Inch Nail's Came Back Haunted.

Some of his modern stuff has been fairly poor; the short film with the woman on a step-ladder talking about how many rocks she has (can't remember the title), and the Dior advert wasn't his best effort. But I don't think he takes them particularly seriously so they're not really indicative of how Twin Peaks will look or what kind of creative state he's in.

Ya know... I never thought about it until you two pointed it out, but, you're both right.

I think the reason not many people rave about his short films are because, he's too weird!!! And that weirdness that works well across a long palette, such as a feature length film (Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway... etc) doesn't translate well in an 8 minute short. He's too avant-garde for short films. His shorts feel like too much oddness forced and condensed. And what happens when something is condensed!? Its too bitter, too strong, needs diluting.

Welcome to the thread, Bill!

To the best of my knowledge, Criterion does not offer digipak cases for Blu-ray editions that are being originally released in the plastic cases.

The preferences for digipaks vs. plastic cases are across the board here, but Criterion goes the full nine yards either way.

FYI they are not really "digibooks" if you are thinking like the hard-bound book-like packages that the studios have done for occasional/special releases (Jaws, Citizen Kane, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, etc).

The early Criterion releases were "digipacks" - which are not as substantial as "digibooks" and the booklet is completely detached from the folding cardboard case. I find them to be pretty flimsy, and the ones I have look a bit beat up nowadays even though I take care of them. Just *touching* them or moving them on a shelf seems to break them down LOL. I believe there were alot of complaints/issues with the packaging on their first wave of releases, which is why they ultimately replaced them. If you have the plastic case version, I would just stick with that.
