Plus it has an interesting "story behind the story" regarding Primo Carnera, which sometimes Criterion goes for. I think it's an underrated classic and would make a great Criterion.

Funny you mention the snap case of Femme Fatale! Back when Hollywood Video was still around all their WB titles that would normally have a snap case they got as the keep case! So I bought a previously viewed copy for a nice paper insert put it in a new case it looked great. A few years back I got rid of it because I told myself I would never watch the movie in standard def again!

I did see it opening weekend when it hit theatres in Twin Cities area because it was the best thing to classic 80's DePalma

Sadly I never got round to watching Femme Fatale . All I know is that the film received very mixed opinions; some loved it, some hated it, and that it saw De Palma's career nosedive. Hopefully an HD version will be available at some point.

I do remember liking Femme Fatale when I saw it not long after its’ original release, so yeah – like others have said, check that one out!

Default Most exciting Criterion release announcement

OK, now that the post-announcement quiet has set in and we've all adjusted to the excitement or disappointment of the latest announcement (Night and the City for me, thank you very much), I thought I'd ask folks the following two questions:

1. Which of Criterion's past announcements most excited you? In other words, which single release, when announced, made you say "OMG, YES!!!!"?

2. Which future release, if announced, would most excite you? Disregard the probability of it actually happening. In other words, you can include Warner Bros, or even Disney titles, in your wished-for release.

My answers:

1. Red River
2. The Big Sleep (both cuts)

1.- La Dolce Vita
2.- Nights of Cabiria coming out from OOP on blu

It is just a coincidence that both turn out to be Fellini films

My answers:

1. Day For Night
2. Chabrol's Le Boucher

I've gone on about the merits of the latter before, but since it seems that most people here haven't seen it, here's another shot to put it on people's radar.

I was really stoked years ago when Army of Shadows was announced, because I had just become familiar with Melville a few months earlier via his other Criterion titles. I also loved the announcement of The Night of the Hunter.

I think that I might have to agree with you about The Big Sleep. A Criterion release of both cuts would be epic. I keep hoping that they'll release In a Lonely Place, as that one has a decent chance of being in the Collection.

1. either Don't Look Now (which had been hinted at) or My Darling Clementine (which was announced out of the blue)

2. It has a 0.0% chance of happening, but my holy grail is a complete chronological box set of the 1930-1969 Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies animated shorts

2. Dogville or Full Cut Tree of Life

No they are not poor, but they don't have unlimited funds (look at the number of leaflet inserts instead of booklets.) And seeing how they dodge the question on how much they've spent on the Apu Trilogy, I think it is safe to assume they spent a lot.

I actually had to be out of the house during announcements yesterday but I brought my phone along to see them. I'm happy for everyone getting what they want. At the moment, only Dressed to Kill for me. I'm happy I held off on the MGM Blu-ray, can't wait to see how that 4K scan looks. I had an interesting experience with this film when I watched it, sort of a love/dislike. My exploitation-loving self dug the sleaziness of it, and there are some truly good qualities to it, it's fun. There's also some blatant Hitchcock-ripping that became annoying. Some moments were unintentionally hilarious in a "so-bad-it's-good" way, like when
[Show spoiler]Kate finds out that the man she had sex with had contracted an STD
(something that shouldn't be funny, but I just remember it was, perhaps in the execution of that reveal). So it has things about it that work and don't work, that even clash sometimes, but I even like some of the things that don't work about it. Not De Palma's best by any means, but very enjoyable.

As for the others, nothing particularly stands out, except for Two Days, One Night which I knew about because it's a movie from last year but didn't feel particularly drawn to, and Night and the City because of Jules Dassin. I own Rififi because I thought that was great, heist movies are almost always a blast, and I liked the famous silent sequence and the gritty, downbeat feel. I think the only other Dassin I've seen is The Naked City, which I wasn't that compelled by. Not sure how much I'd like Night and the City.
