Just got another 20% BN coupon in the mail. Trying to decide if I can afford another movie this month. I wish it was good past this coming Tuesday... instead, deciding between Limelight and The Thin Blue Line. Decisions, decisions....

Dressed to Kill coming soon (August):

http://www.amazon.com/Dressed-to-Kil...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Wonder if this will beat the MGM or French disc (which I have)?

2. Which future release, if announced, would most excite you? Disregard the probability of it actually happening. In other words, you can include Warner Bros, or even Disney titles, in your wished-for release.

Had to think about #2 for a bit

1. Kiss Me Deadly

2. The Naked Spur (or a box of Mann/Stewart though Man From Laramie is already out) or The Wanderers

[Show spoiler]My answers:

1. Red River
2. The Big Sleep (both cuts)
1. The Fisher King
2. The Shawshank Redemption or The Usual Suspects

It will have a 4K remastering approved by De Palma, so I'd say yes.

hey bwdowiak and WonderWeasel:

Sorry, but anytime I see U2 mentioned here, my inner-U2 thing is activated...well, its because I happen to maintain one of the longest-standing U2 fan sites on the internet (U2Station.com), and its 18 years and going strong (founded in 1997). In response to Great Owl, I'd have to disagree U2's newest album sounds like Coldplay. Of course Coldplay spent much of their time channeling U2 but they've come up with their own sound and melodies, so I give them perks for that. Anyway, my love-hate relationship with U2 has far exceeded my grasp so I can't get too deep into this now... :::::back to your regularly scheduled Criterion programming now:::::

Here's my guilty, humiliating admission for the day:

I've never seen a film by Ozu.

The info on Criterion's page for it specifies that it is indeed "Brian De Palma's preferred unrated version." (link)

Thankfully, Amazon Prime Instant Video has four Ozu films. I'm going to begin to fill my Ozu void starting tonight.

Yes, those shots are often called 'pillow shots' (a reference to a Japanese term apparently) or 'curtain shots'.

Maybe because I don't have a complete grasp on the reasoning behind the term 'pillow shot', but I prefer 'curtain shot'. It's been said they are like the closing of the curtain between scenes in a play. They build anticipation for what is to come next, and they allow the viewer time to reflect on the scene that has just ended. They are also places where Ozu sticks metaphoric images that reflect the situation.

There are certain directors who invoke a feeling unique to them. I have been known to mention "that Altman feel". And, when I was first discovering Woody Allen, my anticipation would always build during those black and white title cards with the swing jazz playing. However, there really isn't much that compares with the giddy feeling I get in my gut when I'm watching the slow drawn out title cards of an Ozu I am seeing for the first time.
Completely agree; Ozu is probably my favourite director of all time (along with maybe Herzog and Antonioni).
Favourite 'curtain shots'? Mine would have to be in Early Summer. It happens when
[Show spoiler]the mother has just finished discussing the death of their son during war-time, she pauses for a second and looks upwards, and as she does this Ozu cuts to a shot of a flag, waving peacefully in the wind. Perfection.
