Hello tisdivine,

State of Siege also has quite a bit of rapid cuts and zooms, overhead shots, etc.

If you liked The Confession, you should definitely pick it up. Very intense film with a tremendous atmosphere.

A few years back I got rid of it because I told myself I would never watch the movie in standard def again!

I did see it opening weekend when it hit theatres in Twin Cities area because it was the best thing to classic 80's DePalma
I remember other people doing this as well, but I never did.

There are quite a few very nice films still with snap cases. Another Bertolucci film in the Collection would be great, wouldn't it

The Sheltering Sky Trailer - YouTube

I quite enjoyed The Sheltering Sky book and film. Would be spectacular to see this in the Criterion Collection someday.

I wouldn't go that far, but it's up there.

Those of you who are waiting to watch or buy it, I encourage you to pull the trigger. It's also lighter (in a way) and an easier watch than a lot of Ozu. Phenomenal and beautiful film.

It doesn't get mentioned very often and that's too bad because it shows the lighter side of a director who's usually associated with family dramas. I should have mentioned that both versions are available on Hulu and DVD but the silent version is in an Eclipse set.
Good Morning is my favorite Ozu. I'm dying for a quality blu release of it because that DVD cover art is dreadful and the supplements are well...lacking.

I finally broke down and watched the Jellyfish Eyes trailer. It's hard to make sense of it because they probably cut the trailer to make it more mainstreamish but it could be amazing. It definitely looks artistic and special effectish.

In my opinion it is. It's probably his most gorgeous looking film and the themes of loneliness and drinking and time are the strongest for me here.

The Japanese blu ray of Good Morning is great. Best cover art I think and a pristine transfer

I just checked it out too and I have to say it looks like fun.....in a everything but the kitchen sink, Hausu sort of way! Weather or not that translates to a Criterion release way, who knows? I wouldn't mind if they did but there are so many other titles (mainly upgrades) that I'd prefer to see get their turn first.

Just looked it up. It is quite nice. I think the image used there and another one from the film could be combined quite nicely to keep with the current cover art trend Criterion seems to be using with their Ozu blus.

This would be one of my most wanted Criterions too!!

Actually I would be floored in the announcement of a Criterion Bertolucci Eastern trilogy:
-The Last Emperor (new restoration with OAR as in the 3D Italian Bluray)
-The Sheltering Sky
-Little Buddha

Word on the street is that Rossellini's War Trilogy went OOP. I'd say between that and the new restorations means the upgrade will happen sooner rather than later.

Here's hoping to a series of trilogy boxes to finish the year.

I saw Tokyo Story once. I have the dual format DVDs at home w/ the updated transfer, so I'll give it another look some time in the future. Maybe it will take subsequent viewings and maybe I should have tried something else - something that didn't come with such high expectations, but this film had ZERO emotional impact on me whatsoever. I don't take family and people for granted, so the "wake up call" effect that it had on others did not resonate.

I do wish to see more and my hunch is that I'll like some of it, but my first experience hasn't made me prioritize his work.

Since 6 brave posters admitted to never having seen a film by one of the acknowledged masters of cinema, what about everyone else?

Fill in the blank:

"I am embarrassed to say, but I've never seen a film directed by......"

mine would be Jean Renoir

Godard - Been meaning to see Breathless for a while, but kept putting it off. Maybe I'll watch it this weekend. Alphaville sounds up my alley too.

Jean Renoir is amazing, I never picked up the Criterion dvd of La Grande Illusion but have the studio canal blu. It is one of my blus I value the most. Also wanting to pick up the new blu of The River. Excited about that one.
