Thanks to Criterion i have seen at least one film of most well known directors, but one that comes to my mind although i am not sure if it is on the same level is i have never seen a film by Alejandro Jodorowsky, which is weird since i love surrealist movies.

Fill in the blank:

"I am embarrassed to say, but I've never seen a film directed by......"

mine would be Jean Renoir
Ok, here's another one:
I am embarrassed to say, but I've never seen a film directed by Fellini and Antonioni.

actually, I'm not embarrased at all but anyway..

This was very beautiful to look at, but it didn't grab me as a story to watch a 2nd time.

Speaking of Renoir, has anyone seen Elena and her men?
This was one of the most boring movies I have ever seen.
I don't remember anything.
Maybe I was too tired? I don't know.
And I love Ingrid Bergman.

Sticking with directors in the collection, I've yet to get to:

Jacques Demy
Samuel Fuller
Mike Leigh
Ernst Lubitsch
Eric Rohmer
Preston Sturges
Jacques Tati

Yeah surrealist perfectly describes Jodorowsky. It's so surreal the first time you see one of his films but then it starts to grow on you and by the end of the film you really will appreciate his work.

I suggest you start with Holy Mountain.

I only have that since fry's had it listed for $1.99 with free shipping on their website awhile back, and then shockingly honored the order.

I've never seen a film by Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Combine that with the fact that I have yet to see a film by Ozu (Late Spring didn't work out for me last night -- tonight, though, definitely), and it's fairly obvious that the gaping black hole in my film experiences is Asian film.

OTOH, there is absolutely NO WAY IN HELL that I am missing The Assassin, whenever it appears here. So, if nothing else, I will have seen at least ONE film by Hou Hsiao-Hsien by the end of the year.

So, as the year progresses, I will be "getting there."

It's hard for me to say. I'm fairly confident that I've seen at least one film by each of the "acknowledged masters of cinema", but then it depends on who one thinks falls into that category. (On edit: I can say that my having see at least one film by each of the acknowledged masters of cinema is due in no small consideration by my blind-buying a number of Criterion LDs and DVDs.)

Of the directors included in The Collection, the most notable ones for whom I never seen a film would be Abbas Kiarostami and the Dardenne brothers.

I've actually never made it through an entire Wes Anderson movie. I've tried, on more than one occasion. But he's just not my style.

My experience with French directors is limited pretty much to Malle. So what do I need to rectify first? Demy, Tati, or Truffaut?

I definitely would have thought that you'd have at least seen one film from darn near everybody. Pretty confident that you'd like some of the Dardenne brothers films.

Two more from whom I haven't seen anything: Rohmer and Samuel Fuller.

the answer may depend on which Malle film did you see and did you like it? Truffaut's The 400 Blows has universal appeal and is as artful as it is accessible. I'd watch that and go from there.

It's a real joy to see so much love and appreciation of Ozu. The greatest of them all.

Check out White Dog or The Naked Kiss, i wish Criterion upgrades the former, the MoC release looks pretty good.

They are kind of B-Movies, but the production values are good, White Dog even has a great score by Ennio Morricone.

I would recommend Carnč's Children of Paradise to watch on blu... But yeah. Very disappointed with the transfer.

That said, French Cinema is huge and very different between directors and time periods. Look around and see what films interest you. Check out multiple directors and just have fun watching great films.
