I don't think they have a blanket access. Wild at Heart came out on Twilight Time. Lynch has worked with different studios for various projects and they'd have to negotiate with several partners.

This movie works for me on all levels, and is one of my favorite Renoirs (which says a lot). Captain John I thought was ideal, and he was not supposed to be likeable, but that's because he was lost in this world after losing his foot. He welcomed all attention, whether from young or mature girls, because he was ultimately lonely. He was an amateur because Renoir could not afford professional actors. I think he enough got out of their performances, but the color of the country was the main character.

By the way, Subatra Mitra and Satyajit Ray both worked as AD's on the film. You can see some of The River in The Apu Trilogy, and the pacing and tone is similar. If Renoir hadn't gone to India, we might not have had these treasures.

Nice reply! I knew Ray was an AD on the film, which is pretty great. I too see an imprint if this film on Pather, mainly with the documentary footage Renoir incorporated into the film during the primary narration about the river. I think the pacing is similar, but I'm not not positive about the similarity in tone.

I believe Lost Highway and Inland Empire are possible. LH is with Universal (same as MD) and IE is owned by Lynch himself (much like Eraserhead). So it's possible.

Just ordered two of my favorites, 8 1/2 and Paris, Texas on Amazon. I know they're old releases but I don't own them yet. Excited to see how they look in motion.

Thanks. Yeah, the only tonal similarities are that they are both portray adolescence, but the cultures are strikingly different -- native Indian lower class and remnants of English colonialism upper class. Renoir said that he could not make the film from the perspective of the Indians because people thought Westerners would not be able to relate. Thankfully Ray proved them all wrong.

I watched it the other day and loved it.
I had seen it again once in my teens, 20 years ago, but didn't remember anything.

I could buy the Artificial Eye one (I don't have a problem with regions), but I'd like to see what Criterion could come up with, both in terms of quality and extras.

Me, I went for the Artificial Eye set, as I imagine it will probably be years before Criterion trickles all those Truffaut titles out, if ever for some of them. Of course, they could surprise me.... I am, however, waiting for them to blu-ray the Doinel box.
The PQ on Artificial Eye's blu is not going to win any awards, although it doesn't look bad by any means. Either this one or The Bride Wore Black is my least favorite Truffaut film that I've seen so far. (I've seen 6) That isn't to say that they weren't enjoyable on some level, its just that I felt The Woman Next Door could have been better.

Pedro had mentioned that Criterion has the U.S. distribution rights to all but one of the Artificial Eye titles that were released in the UK. Even with that being said, some of those titles, I would presume, are pretty far down the list of films to be released.

I, too, am holding out for the Doinel box from Criterion, though.

halfway through Love Streams... kind of a strange rhythm to this film. it is intermittently very good, but occasionally odd in a wtf is going on here type of way.

CC related.. I watched That Man From Rio w/ J.P. Belmondo... didn't quite meet the expectations I had for it. I know it is a comedy, but a slightly more engaging plot would have helped. I think I'll like it better on second viewing.

also bought The River for $11 brand new, Mouchette from a U.S. seller for a little over $11, and Big Country for $1.05 (thank you Sears for your shop your way program. )

That Man from Rio rocked my face. It's quite a departure from the Criterion films that star Jean-Paul Belmondo, though. Both That Man from Rio and Up to his Ears seem to pay homage to the physical stunts of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, so there's definitely an offbeat edge to the action.

The Professional, a 1981 film starring Belmondo, has the same sort of vibe.

I've actually been putting off Love Streams. I've caught snippets, but from what I can tell, Cassavetes' alcoholism was wearing on him and you can see it in his face. Sort of painful to see what a true artist had done to himself.

Maybe that was just the print I saw.

Love Streams is phenomenal and stands against some of Cassavetes's best works.

oh, yes... most definitely you can see it in his face. he kinda looks like death actually. I don't know much about him - I do know that he died young. his appearance in the film kept me thinking, "gee, 5 years after this movie, he was gone... sad."

his look plays well with the character, though, so he definitely had that going for him and for the film.

yeah, I did kinda pick up on that vibe. what does and doesn't make me laugh, however, makes me a bit of an odd one. very early in Love Streams, there is a scene at a nightclub and the lyrics of a song sung is something about "kinky reggae." I found that infinitely more funny that anything in the Belmondo film.

On the way home from work today, I sold off my DVD set of The Killers and my MGM Blu-ray of Dressed to Kill to make way for the upcoming Criterion Blu-ray upgrades of both.

I used the money to buy the Criterion Blu-ray of Limelight, since that was only $27 and change at the Movie Stop next to the used store.

It's all good.

I would love to see The Professional on blu. Love the Morricone score.

I didn't think that Love Streams was very good. Certainly not on par with the other Cassavettes films in the 5-Film set from Criterion. It's story isn't very good, for one, and it's sort of all over the place. I agree it has an odd pace.

Nice job!

Usually I donate my upgraded DVDs to the library and use them for tax credit. It's just easier and it goes for a good cause, but usually I get half value if that when everything is calculated.

Last year I got lucky. I actually donated my Errol Morris DVD set before it was announced from Criterion. It was OOP and selling for $500, so I got a nice deduction for that.

Anyone else a tad surprised that Bogdanovich's Targets hasn't yet been inducted? It just screams Criterion to me. Perhaps when the WB deal is over...
