I can't think of Criterion doing anything better with the transfer/encode.

The Italian blu-ray release looks like the film has been subjected to lots of contrast boosting. Criterion is known to do their own contrast boosting to b&w films (just compare MOC vs. Criterion releases of the same film), so it's possible their release will look similar, but hopefully they won't take it as far as the Italian release. The blacks in the Italian release are also on the verge of crushing, if not already, so I wouldn't say that Arrow release is disappointing by any means. The second screen capture is noticeably better on the Arrow release. Both releases have their issues, but overall I'd stick with the Arrow just because of the contrast boosting that seems to be going on with the Italian release.

Do you think Criterion would ever release Hedwig and the Angry Inch? I think believe it's a New Line Cinema title, but has not yet come to Blu-ray...has developed a cult following over the years (and is actually a very good movie)

The review for The Bridge is now at DVDBeaver. I generally like War films and the review has me interested in purchasing it as a blind buy.

Does anyone think we might ever see Powell and Pressburger's Gone to Earth? I don't know much about it, but I think it's very interesting that David O. Selznick radically edited the film (cutting out nearly half an hour) and changed the name to The Wild Heart for the American release. I'd also just love to see another P&P Technicolor film in high definition (and hopefully we'll see The Tales of Hoffman again).

Studio Canal has the rights I think, so unless they license it to Criterion, your only option is buying the UK import which requires a region free player of course. The restoration is incredible, btw.

the latest addition to my movie room. I had it professionally framed; they added the white border and (obviously) the black frame.

I still need to find a place to hang it. this picture probably doesn't do it much justice.

Very nice! Funny that it should be you posting this, as I actually saw Breathless for the first time last week, which was prompted after your question of what director you hadn't watched a film from yet. It was an enjoyable film, though I was thrown off a little by its unconventional narrative style. It's definitely something I'd like to revisit again one day.

My post from 5/22

Bicycle Thieves should have been in the collection a long time ago. I imagined it being one of the Criterion staples like Seven Samurai and The Seventh Seal.

As for Somewhere, I think I liked it more than most but I still didn't think great things about it. It's a fine film that indeed has some fantastic moments. When the film comes up, the first thing I think back to is that memorable image of the main character played by Stephen Dorff in a chair sitting while a head cast dries. Symbolic in more than one way. Felt like an iconic callback to Ben Braddock underwater in The Graduate.

Lost in Translation is definitely the best I've seen from Coppola, it wasn't as amazing as I had anticipated going in being that it took so long for me to see it, but a very good film with a relatable central relationship and premise.

It's in the Collection (#374); it just hasn't made its way to Blu-ray yet.

They are going to be a lot rarer than they used to be (just the other day I was reading the booklet that came with I Married a Witch, which was a $29.99 title - how I miss those) but they will still happen.

Oh yeah I know. I should've been clearer, it should have been a Blu-ray long ago.

But at least now if it happens it'll likely be a 4K transfer.

Cool! yeah, I recall you saying that you had not seen any Godard. I kinda figured that you'd find something good about Breathless knowing that you created the noir thread here. while it isn't quite noir, it definitely riffs off it a little bit.

Yep, I certainly saw some noir inspirations and elements in there.

Ugh, guys we already have a blu of Lost in Translation! It's my favorite Coppola too, and one of my favorite films of the 2000s, but we still don't have MARIE ANTOINETTE. My second favorite Coppola. If Criterion desires and is able to get the rights to release a Coppola I pray it's for MA.

But it's not from a 4K scan, and seeing the screenshots there's certainly LARGE room for improvement!

Virgin Suicides would be one of my top picks for inclusion in the collection. It's owned by Paramount, so I would think it's a possibility... not sure if it was included in Paramount's deal with WB or not.
