Yes, I have a question. Why did they announce your movie for July and then postpone it until September?

Oh, to talk to you? Thanks.

Marie Antoniette is tailor-made for a Criterion Blu - with all of the bright colors in this film, it would be fantastic on this format. IMHO this is SC's best film, hands down.

I recently re-watched the DVD, and feel this film is superb; amazing period costumes, setting, attitudes, etc.

The '80's punk/pop/new wave soundtrack is especially extraordinary, and is the icing on the cake - though some may think the modern songs don't fit into a period piece, they work really well here - especially Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy" - playing over the scene when Marie Antoinette & her retinue eat the rich French desserts. Also liked the inclusion of Sixousie & the Banshees & New Order (one of my all-time favorite bands)....

And, Kirsten Dunst has never been cuter than in this film....

wow, so you say that this "works" in the film? haven't seen this film, but I guess one will have to "see it to believe it" because the thought of it makes me want to vomit.

If that's the case, the you probably won't want to see Marie Antoinette. I not only didn't mind the modern music, but thought it was great.

However, I also liked the use of '70's - '90's rock/pop music by David Bowie, Nirvana, & Fiona Apple (among others) in the 4th season of American Horror Story - despite the fact that the show was set during the 1950's. In fact, though I thought the 4th season was the weakest of the series, I felt these musical sequences were the highlight of the show....

The soundtrack is mainly one of the reasons I haven't seen this movie!
(I'm a fan of symphonic music and especially when period films are involved!)
But I hadn't heard any good words about the film itself too back then and a 6.4 at imdb isn't encouraging too. (not that I always agree with the imdb ratings).

I don't mind the anachronistic use of music. just the specific use of the song you mentioned doesn't sound so good.

For a little while there, Wes Anderson was fantastic at fleshing out his soundtracks with somewhat lesser known but well chosen pop tunes.

I need to rewatch because when I saw it, it was like a TV soap and was awful...

Because the TV I watched it on wasn't mine and they had the high from rate crap on and didn't know how to change it XD made the film look and feel so cheap and awful, was so distracting.

Look forward to seeing it again

I can't even remember it I was so distracted lol

Strangely enough that's one of the few things I remember liking about the film.

And nobody was more surprised than me. I should have absolutely hated that but for some reason it did actually work.

Just finished Marie Antoinette, forgot how good it was! I thought it was more modernised, but its not, yes some of the music is modern, but there is a lot more classical pieces. The sets and costumes are so beautiful... would be great to see this released by Criterion

I think its refreshing what she has done with the period genre and making it more interesting for people who say get bored by that genre.

There seem to be a lot of people posting in this thread (including myself) who admit to not having seen any movies by [insert highly regarded/influential/otherwise important director].

Please join me in listing 5 directors in the collection that you love along with the movies you think are the best introductions into their bodies of work (not necessarily their best film--or even one in the collection--but one that embodies their style and is easy to get into for a newcomer).

Robert Altman: The Player
Yasujiro Ozu: Tokyo Twilight
John Huston: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Jim Jarmusch: Down By Law
Roman Polanski: The Pianist

Honorable mention:
Abbas Kiarostami: Taste of Cherry (Honorable mention because I have only seen a very small percentage of his work)

Ooh would LOVE Marie Antoinette. And certainly meets the "important" criteria. Whether people loved it or hated it, EVERYONE was talking about that movie when it came out (and with good reason). The anachronism worked super well IMO, found it immensely entertaining.

Anyone know how the UK release of The Man Who Fell to Earth compares to the Criterion release in regards to the transfer? I want to add the film to my library but not at the Criterion price.

Thanks,
Tom

My personal favorite director for good soundtracks is Noah Baumbach. That guy just has great taste in music! Runner up is Jim Jarmusch.

Ironic that both of them were hanging out not too long ago, along with Anderson and Coen...they all share great taste in music in films!

See photo below for proof.

So the Pickup at South Street restoration looked fantastic, just unbelievably good. It was my first time seeing it and I had only seen The Naked Kiss beforehand, so was surprised by how engaging and fast paced it was, yet still super stylized. My guess is this restoration will land on Criterion either towards the end of the year or early 2016.

I don't have the CC version, but the UK release looks terrific and I would highly recommend it, assuming you can play region B content. As someone pointed out the color tones between this and the CC release are different (more green/blue in UK, more red/brown in US), but I don't think there's any clear case of which one is more correct. For instance, in the JP Melville titles, I personally prefer the UK release tones. Especially for Army of Shadows, the color tones of the UK release seem a lot more in tone with the film-makers' intentions as described in the making-of.
