I feel almost the same way. I tried to love Glengary G R aside from a few lines that I laughed at I just can't get into his work as much. I don't dislike his work I just find GHGR overrated. kind of the same way I find The Usual Suspsect overrated. Good movie but people over blow it to proportions it doesn't deserve.

So Arrow announced Firemen's Ball and Closely Watched Trains (which they call Closely Observed Trains) for September as UK only, both using 4k restorations.

I'm pretty sure that Criterion owns the US rights to both. Unless there's something I haven't heard about, these look likely to come to Criterion sometime, hopefully soon.

EDIT: I do like The Verdict, though. Good film.
I tend to see myself disagreeing with you often on your taste in films. I see nothing "slogging" about GGGR. The dialogue IS THE action! Hey, some people like that style of filmmaking and some don't. To each their own.

Okay, this I can agree on. I too don't really like The Usual Suspects because its tedious and a chore to sit through and that's the only reason why.

Actually, I think it depends on the salespeople at each individual store. At my closest B&N, I've been allowed to stack all sorts of combinations, as in $40 less 50 % less 10% less 20% ... which brought my final cost down to $14.39 (a 64% discount overall) and once I got to go with $40.00 less 50% less 10% less $8.00 ... so that my final price was $9.99 (a 75% discount overall).

I'm shamefully spoiled at my store. I know it, and I greatly appreciate it.

It would certainly be interesting to see more Czech films on Blu-ray.

I've only seen Closely Watched Trains (didn't care for it), Marketa Lazarová (loved it), and Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (hated it).

A rumor circulating around Reddit is that Daisies will be released on Blu-ray.

Yeah, Mamet's dialogue isn't meant to be realistic, it's meant to be more like music.

People don't talk like Aaron Sorkin characters either which is part of what makes Aaron Sorkin characters so much fun to listen to.

However, Arrow have confirmed that both will be region free. So there's not much point in waiting for the Criterion upgrade if you want them!

I just finished watching Day for Night, and I absolutely loved every single second of it. I think it may just be my second favorite Truffaut film (behind Jules and Jim). I cannot wait for this to be released in August!

GGGR is one of my favorite movies because of the highly stylized dialogue (and the amazing performances by the entire cast, of course). I liken Mamet's dialogue to an intricately choreographed fight scene. The marks must be hit precisely.

I quite like Glengarry despite the Mamet script. The performances more than make up for it. My list of random quotes from my days in the Usenet newsgroups contains one about Mamet:

"In HEIST, it was that horrendous forced tough guy dialogue sounding like David Mamet's idea of what movie tough guys would sound like if David Mamet wrote their dialogue." (Brian Camp)

Kudos to the Criterion Collection for releasing this on DVD back in the 200X's?! If not for this, I would probably never have heard of the film.

[Show spoiler]Obviously Mary Henry (the main character) drowned in the beginning, and the person we saw walk out of the lake three hours later was her ghost. What threw me off when first watching this was that she, as a ghost, was still able to drive, interact/talk with others, etc. As the movie progressed, we did notice that less & less people were able to see her at all. I'm guessing she was supposed to be in some sort of purgatory, and then as she started seeing more of the dead people, she became more detached/distant (literally & figuratively) from the living.

[Show spoiler]The conversation she had in the doctor's office was interesting, in that it implied that she had been distant with people when she was alive; so it's almost as if she was in a self-imposed isolation anyway, prior to her drowning at the lake. We just saw a continuation of this when her ghost was being distant with people as well. The conversation(s) she had with the ministers at the church seemed to confirm this, i.e. when she said that her job as a church organist was just a job, and that she felt no emotion in regards to it (or presumably anything else for that matter).
The Criterion DVD of this film is one of my favorite titles. I'm puzzled why Criterion has not issued this on blu ray.

Of all the things to not like about Glenngary Glenn Ross, dialogue would be the last thing I would ever think about.

...dialogue doesn't get any better than that imo.

To me Glengarry Glen Ross is about the acting, and all of the action and plot is there within the actors. It's theatrical, and much akin to 12 Angry Men in that way. Granted, it goes beyond the "one room" synopsis, but it doesn't need to.

Mamet's first films as a writer/director are a mix between psychological thriller and noir, and by no means "important" as much as interesting or entertaining. They are great films.

You never know; BFI released MAITRESSE years ago from a Criterion transfer and that has never had a US upgrade...

Criterion has enough movies to release way more than the 5 or so they usually release. But I'm sure they know what they're doing and which movies released at what time have the best prospects for maximizing their profits. And I'm sure everyone here wants Criterion to do well financially.

Nice! Can't say I have a special rapport with staff at the two stores I frequent, but they know me well enough. Should I get any coupons during the next Criterion sale, it will be interesting to see if I can get more than 50+10 off. Would be handy, as I've got 20 titles on my wants list for the next sale, and many more after that.
