I predict that we will finally get some more Kurosawa. Maybe even a pair of them, such as Stray Dog and Drunken Angel.

We know that (unless it gets bumped back again) the final details concerning the Criterion edition of Moonrise Kingdom will be revealed next Monday ... including its new spine number (probably 775, but possibly 777) and cover art.

I've also revisited the 2015 New Years cartoon, and have wondered if the gang on the road chasing Harold Lloyd across the bridge could possibly represent Thieves Highway? And I've been toying with the idea of "a suspension of time", given the design of the bridge and the clock underneath it, but no titles come readily to mind. Could be I'm trying too hard ... !

Our coupons went for books My wife used hers for the new Anne Hillerman (continuing her father's series), mine for the new James S.A. Corey Expanse novel.

I did stop into B&N the other day, prepared to pick up some Criterions, and was surprised to spot some Olive titles (my local B&N is very, very sparse on Olive releases). I managed to pick up the Otto Preminger set (unfortunately, they didn't have a copy of the Film Noir set) and Johnny Guitar, along with the non-Olive Imitation of Life two-fer. I'll hit them again next week. I'm hoping they have a copy of the Twin Peaks set, and see if I can grab some other usually-on-the-expensive-side titles.

The Criterions I figure I can wait for July.

Anyone know the rights' status of Robert Bresson's post-Mouchette titles? Particularly A Gentle Woman and Four Nights of a Dreamer, which as far as I'm aware, were only released as poor VHS transfers.

I've seen a miserable bootleg of Gentle Woman, which was a stunner of an artwork. Despite being Bresson's first color, it's as elemental and pure as anything. And an even rougher copy of Dreamer exists, which I couldn't bring myself to watch, but I've read numerous Bresson scholars who hold the film in very high regard. Anyone who brought these titles to blu-ray would be doing Bresson's legacy and world cinema a great favor. Make it happen!!

And in much less than a pipe dream, always happy to see Criterion give their Bresson upgrades. Balthazar is due, and I know Mouchette recieved a lovely transfer from Artificial Eye so it might not be high onmany people's list, but it's a favorite of mine (HD transfer available on Hulu). And Diary of a Country Priest, such a neccessity!

I too would love to see more Bresson upgraded to blu-ray, especially those titles you mentioned.

Au Hasard Balthazar has had a hell of a time getting a release through Artificial Eye. I think I pre-ordered it close to 2 years ago. If anyone were to finally bring it out I would be happy, especially Criterion.

Cool to hear they had some Olive titles, my BN is light on those as well. And I hate I forgot about my coupons... they expired just after I got back from a conference.

Yes, I remembered that was the case. But just as the buildings with the moon above them turned out to be a double clue for Moonrise Kingdom and Night and the City, I'm trying to think outside the box and come up with additional possibilities.

Email from Amazon.ca tonight cancelling due to pricing error. I only ordered two titles to see if it might work out. In a way I'm kind of glad as it was obviously a mistake and I was 50/50 about taking advantage of it. Just my feelings on the matter - good on you if you do get your orders shipped.

Amazon.ca cancelled all mine too except for Thief, which is sitting in Not Yet Shipped. I assume they will cancel that too. No big deal.

Weird, i just got an email that they now have a shipping estimate on my order of 1, maybe it goes automatically since they are now restocking from all the cancellations.

Just watched Mala Noche for the first time (which I really dug) so yeah I could use an upgrade for that (The beginning actually reminded me so much of My Own Private Idaho that I first assumed it was a special feature on that set -- I discovered it via Criterion's Hulu+ page.)

Plus:

Gilda
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
The Lady Eve
Mulholland Drive
Repeat Performance
Two Women
Written on the Wind

And there comes the cancellation notice...

Not unexpected, though to lament I've gone ahead and picked up The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, The Maltese Falcon, and To Catch A Thief from B&N.

Not the worst consolation prize.

I wonder if some cyber crime hackers got into amazon.ca and lowered the prices on the Criterions?

I just watched Michael Mann's cybercrime thriller Blackhat two nights ago and despite critics tearing this movie apart, I actually liked the film. Has anyone else seen it?

Not yet but I'm looking forward to it hitting Redbox.

Check that - it's already hit Redbox but DVD only. And this is why I still have a Netflix disc account.
