Well, I don't know what genres you love etc., but out of the 12 Criterion I own (), my absolute favourites are:

The first 2, have/will become Christmas and summer staples for me.
The third one, although I love it, is a quite painful experience to watch, so I will be viewing it more rarely.
all different genres, so maybe you find one of them that you like.

If Riot on Cell Block 11 had been released by Kino Lorber (for example) rather than Criterion, I probably would not have been interested in buying a copy. But I did in fact buy it, because it was a Criterion title; however, it wasn't the Criterion name alone that gave the title a certain cachet in my mind. It's because I knew that Criterion would offer a superior transfer of the film, and load the disc with a bunch of fascinating extras that would enrich my enjoyment of the movie, and make it worth my while to give it a look. And sure enough, by the time I watched the film, delved into all the extras and read the essay and other material, I was pretty impressed with the total experience ...
Interesting that you use Riot in Cell Block 11 as an example. There's substantial evidence that the film should be presented in a widescreen AR, at least 1.66:1 or wider, and not the 1.37:1 on the Criterion disc. See some of Ron Furmanek's evidence here. (This page is displaying some wonky formattin tags for me, don't know if it's just me or for everyone.)

This doesn't invalidate the point that Criterion have as good a batting average as anyone, and no one can say that they don't care as much or more than anyone about the quality of their product. Just saying they aren't perfect.

It's not a Blu-Ray, but it's absolutely one of my favorite films.

And if you're looking for some more mainstream Soderbergh work, I highly recommend King of the Hill, an excellent film (it has quite possibly the best performance by any child actor ever) that comes packaged with the underrated (including by Soderbergh himself) The Underneath.

I suppose that previous Criterion CLUE wasn't for the Man who Wasn't There as it looks like Universal is releasing the title in Sept.

Seeing these rumours that Criterion MAY release The New World with multiple cuts, do you think there is the slightest possibility they could consider releasing alternate cuts for The Thin Red Line and even The Tree of Life now?

I know there is probably no rush to re release The Thin Red Line but would be awesome if they did...

I'm not any kind of Malick expert, but New World has existing multiple cuts, while I don't know if the others do.

Ah right makes sense then - he's meant to be working on a new cut of The New World >.<

I don't think that extra footage exists. I'll have to consult my Malick book again.

With Malick, pretty much everything has multiple cuts as I understand it. But I'm not sure that they are "real" ones in the sense that these The New World ones are (supposedly).

Not to mention that The Thin Red Line is already nearly 3 hours long. Though, I doubt Terrence Malick would care about putting out a 4 or 5 hour cut, if he thought he would end up with a better result. Personally, I think the movie's nearly perfect as is.

Speaking of Malick, I'm in the middle of a really good book about his work and his approach right now. It's called "Terrence Malick and the Though of Film", written by Steven Rybin. It's extremely dense and academic, so it's taking me a long time to get through it. But it's been rewarding so far -- and I've added some words to my vocabulary along the way, as well!

Good stuff.

well, there are already those deleted scenes, so he could put them back for a longer cut.

So the announcement is usually days-end on the 15th, right? So doesn't that mean, if they missed the end of the day yesterday, that, the announcement should come early the next day (today)? Or does this announcement HAVE TO be after 4:30pm every month?

I had asked yesterday and got no response in the midst of all this, but I think we're all in agreement that The Tenant was hinted at and is possibly on the way. I would love it if they did and got some new extras with Polanski.

That would be a show of good faith, wouldn't it?

I can only remember this happening once about a year ago.
