I'm sorry but you've got it all wrong.
The tree of life is a film I have seen and know that I love so I would love a Criterion release for the reasons I said and you quoted.

My posts referred, as I've already said, solely on blind buys OR movies that normally Criterion lovers wouldn't have an interest on otherwise!
Totally different!
eg. if Criterion announced tonight "Hercules in New York", the Criterion collectors would rush to buy it (or would try to persuade themselves to see it with an open mind since Criterion releases it and they might know better) because it is Criterion, but would otherwise mock such a release coming from another studio.

So, there are MANY films indeed that already have a release but I would love Criterion to release them for better menus, extras, quality etc., but I wouldn't buy just anything just because Criterion releases it.

(This page is displaying some wonky formattin tags for me, don't know if it's just me or for everyone.)

This doesn't invalidate the point that Criterion have as good a batting average as anyone, and no one can say that they don't care as much or more than anyone about the quality of their product. Just saying they aren't perfect.
So many films from the mid-fifties were exhibited in a variety of aspect ratios; I know there's been a lot of debate about the "proper" ratio for titles like Columbia's On the Waterfront (Criterion's release includes 1.33, 1.66, and 1.85), Universal's There's Always Tomorrow, and Allied Artists' Riot in Cell Block 11, just to name three.

Personally, I want to see a film "as it was originally released to theatres", which is why I loathe pan-and-scan presentations and avoid them as I would the plague, and why I had no desire to see MGM's bastardized "widescreen" presentation of Gone With the Wind. That said, if a film was originally shown in multiple aspect ratios, I'm easy going enough to be able to pick one and be satisfied with it. Looking at the comparison frames for Riot in Cell Block 11, I don't see any visual information "missing" from the 1.33 samples, and I suspect that the original newsreel footage which is shown at the beginning of the film was probably shot in the Academy ratio, so I'm good with Criterion's presentation as is.

If they don't announce Mulholland Dr, then why did they draw the blue key three months ago? Just to show they can draw like a sixth grader? Haaaaaaa

If what the Reddit source said turns out to be true... that'd be the first time I need/want every single one of them.

I'm sure the announcement will happen whenever it's ready.

Facts:

There are no set times to which Criterion adheres when announcing titles.

They usually come out on the 15th of every month, barring any holidays, weekends, or "issues".

Opinions, but are probably facts when you really think about it:

Criterion doesn't care that several of us hit F5 all day.

Criterion doesn't care about our work schedules.

I don't think those were meant to be all for the same month, probably just generally upcoming.

on a more positive feel good note...

I like you people. and yeah, I got a good memory for stuff like this. what would you like to know about your posting history here, Clare?

- you inquired about purchasing The Best Years of Our Lives on Amazon once.
- CC releases haven't quite tickled your fancy over the past few months.
- you sold (or tried to sell) a few CC DVDs on eBay (The Ruling Class was one of them.. can't remember the others)
- you have a friend in England who seems to get the best of you with bets, (sorry )
- I'm pretty sure you said you lived in England

why do I remember? don't know. its easy for me. and because, I value what you and others have to say.

I understand the distinction you are trying to make, but consider the fact that the reasons you value what CC could potentially do for The Tree of Life are the reasons why people value what the label can do for ANY film - especially ones that people have not previously heard of. It is easy to pique interest when the film comes with CC's endorsement. ...and that endorsement is in delivering a "quality presentation" - PQ, supplements, and otherwise.

I understand that.
But:
I saw your collection. You have a great collection of movies!
I don't see any fantasy anime in there or something along those lines.
That means you don't like them?
BUT, i saw you had an open mind (if I understood correctly) to Jellyfish Eyes (and good for you, we should all have open minds).

Would you still have this attitude towards it if it wasn't Criterion and it was just a film released in a Japanese Bluray?
I would please ask you to be completely frank..

While we wait. . .

I want to record a couple of movies on MGM HD to see if I want to buy a few blu-ray titles. Can anyone tell me if the movies they air on the channel are unedited? And are there commercials?

I'm not interested in Jellyfish Eyes. You are correct - the fantasy and anime genres do nothing for me. I probably won't see it.
