Not Criterion related, of course, but does anyone have any thoughts?
Both are wonderful films. A Letter to Three Wives is a sophisticated comedy, and Forty Guns is an over-the-top, operatic Western. I've seen the Mankiewicz movie two or three times, and the Fuller film six or seven times.

They're both blind buys for me. I'm woefully underseen on Mankiewicz.

Thirded. Love that movie and think it's a good representation of 90s French cinema. Would be an ideal Criterion release, and certainly possible since they already have a relationship with the director.

A Girl Cut In Two and The Story of Women could also be terrific Criterion releases.

please report back here on A Letter To Three Wives. that film has kinda sorta been on my wishlist for a while. in the U.S., the Fox release can be had pretty cheaply.

Sophisticated as in All About Eve funny as opposed to Duck Soup funny, Bringing Up Baby funny or Born Yesterday funny. The comedy arises out of a dramatic situation (three women receive a letter from a rival in town, telling them she has run away with one of their husbands) rather than nutty one-liners, slapstick, or broadly drawn characters.

Alright, since we're waiting. I'll tell a sort of off-topic story that I might blog about later. Not sure yet.

Exactly one year ago, Monday, June 16th, I was at a Jeopardy viewing party for my wife. We had about 200 people, news crew, a packed restaurant, people texting me like mad.

So I sneak out to the restroom sometime between the news interview and the viewing party to see the Criterion announcements. I see that Eraserhead, The Innocents, and Ali Fear Eats the Soul (upgrade) are announced. So stoked, but nobody .. and I mean nobody .. in the room would care.

And by the way, she won.

Since the announcement was delayed, I'm expecting a month of that caliber. We also got Macbeth and Sundays and Cybele. It was a fantastic month last September.

Ann Sothern and Jeanne Crain should be reason enough to watch it
