I still have no idea why they don't just sell all their designs as posters. They would be extremely popular. If they are not doing it because current poster sales are low, then they need to refresh their shop - their posters have been the same for years, if they introduced some popular designs they'd see how popular they'd be.

They clearly can do it as they do sell posters and their office has a wide variety on display. COME ON CRITERION. pls.

LOOK how epic Koyaanisqatsi looks (still need to frame it!)

Black Dragon Press does some really good work as well, and they've released limited edition posters of several films that have been released by Criterion. They released a beautiful one for Solaris that I should really splurge on, but I just can't justify $63 for a poster.

Don't foret the price includes the designers work, you aint just buying some print - you are paying for a beautiful piece of art. A lot of those pricier designs are more limited, also a lot aren't simply printed by a printer, they are hand printed and stuff which is beautiful in person to see!

My 2001 print is limited to 100 and is signed by the designer (His work was featured at MoMa) I paid £150 for it and as its limited the price has already shot up

Omg! Stunning work!

You and me both.

I've been waiting for B&N and getting Arrow and MoC in between. It's like I feel I'm not buying any Criterions, when really I am buying tons, just not transacting for a couple weeks.

MoC and Arrow are great because they are so cheap, MoC more so, when I go to buy a Criterion its like ouch bit pricey, ill hold off for now lol...

Saying that I just bought all of Monod-Visions releases of Andrzej Zulawski films (5 I think) came to a hefty £200! and got Kiju Yoshida: Love + Anarchism on preorder which I'm very excited for.. gotta wait till Oct for it though !

Been popping in CEX and getting the odd bluray thats under £3, pretty happy with Medea for a fiver though! Also got Society and watching now was a bit pricey for a blind buy but I'm a sucker for 80's horrors!

I was always off with buying alternate studios stuff as I liked collecting and focusing on one place (Criterion) but the peer pressure form you guys to explore MoC and Arrow etc has been worth it discovered some awesome releases!

Now, BIOT hurry up with that Criterion sale :P

Also atm, Arrow and MoC releases seem so packed and higher quality than Criterion, like the realllllly big booklets and awesome additional features. Not saying Criterions releases are cheap, but the do feel bit empty atm. Especially when the Mondo-Visiosn releases include booklets, artworks, CD of soundtrack + the film etc.

(just a note, I don't normally complain about costs as usually its really worth it, just spending so much atm that I need to budget a little :P)

The main Criterions I really want are:

Watership Down
Don't Look Now
Limelight (first Chaplin!)
Fellini Satyricon
Sundays and Cybèle
My Winnipeg
Les Blank

and now:

Moonrise Kingdom
Blind Chance
A Room with a View

My poor wallet!

So I finally watched House (Hausu) three nights ago, and I'm still not able to fully articulate my response to it, perhaps because my opinion keeps fluctuating. While watching it, I was supremely annoyed by what seemed to be an excess of style over substance. After it ended, I was pretty sure I loathed it. But after 72 hours, I can't seem to get the silly thing out of my mind, and I'm remembering bits and pieces that ... in retrospect ... seem kind of cool. I may have to give it some time and watch it again with fresh eyes in order to sort out my ultimate reaction.

Agreed that Arrow and MoC are right up there with Criterion as far as quality, maybe a little higher these days since the packaging and booklets have been underwhelming. David on CriterionCast made a good point that when comparing his shelf for the 2014 releases to the 2015 releases, the difference stands out. Of course we had dual format and that's controversial, but it seems that more love and care was put into the packaging.

I expect they will finish strong with hopefully a good box set or two (in addition to Apu). Ultimately Criterion is the gold standard for boutique labels and they get the best films, but the gap is narrowing.

I highly recommend WD, Satyricon (which was surprising), My Winnipeg and of course the Les Blank set. I haven't cracked open Limelight yet, but I just dipped into Modern Times so I'll wait before taking on another Chaplin (kinda like Criterion does).

I believe the director wan't to just experiment with different special effects and play around as much as he could, I don't think he ever intended it to be style over substance, just a fun experiment. Wasn't the story also by his daughter?

It's a very whacky and crazy film and it succeeded in exactly what the director wanted, I also found it to be quite a sad film which a lot of symbolism behind it.

You do need to go on open minded though and not to take it too seriously, but then again you can take it seriously and appreciate it

Also has some very very funny moments in it my god I love Hausu!

I bought my first Arrow Blu-ray, Spider Baby, last week, and I am hugely impressed with the presentation. That company is pretty much neck-in-neck with Criterion and Masters of Cinema if this particular release is any indication.

Yeah, Arrow is absolutely part of this particular conversation.

I also really like their approach to limited editions. You can pay a higher price for a fully tricked out collector's edition but once those are gone you can still buy a disc/booklet only release.

I think you were one of the reasons I bought it, Polaroid!

Now, in the meantime, Don't Look Now is a must-own, and you've got to put it near the top of your list. I usually try not to make such flat, emphatic statements so that people can't come back and blame me if I steer them wrong, but based on everything I know about you, I'm 99.99% sure you're gonna love it.

I recently got into print collecting (as if I needed another obsession). Just picked up Mondo's Dr. Caligari poster by a favorite comic artist of mine, and I'm really, really close to pulling the trigger on Black Dragon's Aguirre poster (never though I'd see one for that film, squee).

What other companies do quality prints? I know of Mondo, Nautilus, and Black Dragon. Just trying to keep my eye out for other quality posters.

Good news ahead

REDISCOVER THE CINEMA OF CLAUDE SAUTET

NEW DCPs/STUDIOCANAL RESTORATIONS.

Now playing in New York.

Quote:
The series features three of Sautet's collaborations with Schneider - LES CHOSES DE LA VIE (1970), the policier MAX ET LES FERRAILLEURS (1971), and CÉSAR AND ROSALIE (1972) - along with the rarely-seen VINCENT, FRANÇOIS, PAUL AND THE OTHERS (1974), starring Yves Montand and Gérard Depardieu, and Sautet's final film, NELLY AND MONSIEUR ARNAUD (1995).

Damnit Polaroid, I'm trying to save money for the sale, but you're making it hard not to get that print! I guess it wouldn't hurt to see what shipping is...
