Thanks again! I will add Day for Night to my watch list, and then hopefully I can buy both releases come August.

Has anyone seen it? It is an August release, but I was curious if anyone had seen it previously. I mostly enjoy Streep's performances, especially from her earlier films, like Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, and Kramer vs Kramer.
Then you'll probably love The French Lieutenant's Woman, which earned Streep her third Oscar nomination. In it, she and Jeremy Irons play actors who are starring in a period film about ill-fated lovers ... soon they are involved in a real-life affair which mirrors that of the characters they are playing.

Streep and Irons both get to play on two different registers, and she's amazing: she won a Golden Globe, the LA Critics Best Actress accolade, and the BAFTA award. I've seen it once on the big screen, and I own the DVD, which I'm planning on upgrading to the Criterion blu-ray. If you're a Streep fan, it's a must-see.

Perhaps it has a bit to do with the fact that Australia itself is a unique country, so naturally anything that is going to come out of the film industry is going to be unique and idiosyncratic.

In fact, whenever I think of an Aussie film, I think of colourful, special characters and an often atypical story. Australia has a distinct geography - an ethereal and otherworldly land - with incomparable flora, fauna, culture and mythology. It isn't entirely Euro-centric or British-centric. It's managed to develop it's own flavour, despite British colonisation.

I also don't think I have to put up much of argument when I saw that some of the greatest raw acting talent has come out of that country.

Wake in Fright

Edit: that is from a Canadian Director though, but an Australian film nonetheless.

I just watched the trailer and it looks interesting, though I'm afraid to watch it in case it's an emotionally draining experience.

by the way, on another note, does anyone know if The Go-Between is a title that Criterion could release?
Or maybe Arrow?
I want to wait for another release to compare with Studio Canal one before purchasing it.

Do you know any legitimate websites that sell film posters?
If you don't mind auctions try emovieposter.com. They have three auctions a week with different categories being sold- lobby cards, folded one sheets, rolled one sheets, etc. All are guaranteed original. I've dealt with Bruce and co. for many years and never had a problem. Posters they sell cover all eras from silent to present day and from all countries. They also have a few "major auctions" during the year when many rare (and pricey) items turn up. Those are fun to watch and see what posters turn up but usually end up beyond my means so I'm usually just along for the ride.

Good to know...I got this on a hunch today...one of the reason being "since digipacks are being discontinued, I felt like picking up a digipack" (love these digipacks, why criterion? why?)

With that picked up Close-up too

It was released in the UK by StudioCanal. I would guess its unlikely to be released stateside.

After hearing the praise over the years, I finally caught The Black Stallion last night and was just astounded at how assured it was. It's the kind of family film that clearly highlights the difference from past to present: the sensibility it carries with the child; the filmmaking itself; its refusal to follow a path with payoff after payoff. I was just so thrown off by its ways, and how we'd never, ever see a live action family film even remotely resembling something like this today. The entire beach sequence is a thing of beauty.

Cannot wait 'til Criterion releases this. The visuals clearly stood out, but I was watching it on a pretty shoddy DVD, and all I could think was how much it deserves the Criterion treatment.

I also really like their approach to limited editions. You can pay a higher price for a fully tricked out collector's edition but once those are gone you can still buy a disc/booklet only release.
The Long Good Friday/Mona Lisa set is great!

Maybe this is strange, but I could watch it over and over. I love the atmosphere and characters. It's a great "drinking movie" as well The main "disturbing" scene actually has an eye-opening backstory, and is not to be missed for the fact that a live kangaroo boxes with one of the actors

Indeed. Nelly and M. Arnaud is a really underrated 90s film. Haven't seen any of those others so that's exciting. Surprised it doesn't include Un Coeur en Hiver but that's probably his most famous film (at least in US)?

I have seen Les Choses de la Vie too, and I'd buy it if there was a Criterion of it.

I don't like drinking.
I don't drink and I've never been drunk in my life.
I can 't understand those who drink, what do they find in it..
So.. maybe I should skip this!

You're not alone. I have a drink every now and then but I've never had enough to get hammered. Just has never been my thing.

The concept of a "drinking film" is amusing though.

Not to judge you from Internet posts but I'd wager a guess this film is not for you!

And while I do love a glass of scotch with certain films, what I meant by that is that there is heavy drinking on display here. The characters drink up beer like its nothing, and if I'm remembering correctly from the commentary it was the real deal.

Not to state the obvious, but it's only natural that you don't understand those who drink if you've never been drunk (or even buzzed?) yourself. I used to think the same way until I was introduced to the finer qualities of a well-made cocktail. Or a truly great wine or beer.

I rarely consume more than I can handle. I can count those occasions on one hand... but there's a definite pleasure in watching, for example, a Bond film or the Thin Man with a martini in hand... certain movies really are drinking movies because of natural tie-ins or, well, respective quality of the film that can be enhanced with a few cocktails. I choose my New Year's Eve movies with this in mind.

There's a big difference between moderate consumption for pleasure and stumble-down drunk. The former is great. The latter not so much.

But this has strayed from the topic at hand a bit... I'll toss a half-hearted attempt to nudge this post back towards the CC. I can think of quite a few Criterions for which I'm prepped with spirits. Robinson Crusoe on Mars. The Rebel Samurai set. And then all the classic films that beg for a classic cocktail. The movie/cocktail combination is a very serious matter indeed.
