Does anyway know if the July B&N sale just shows up or do they announce anything before? I went in today and asked the guy working and he said he thought they weren't doing it and he hadn't heard anything. He sounded kind of clueless though.

He was probably clueless. I worked at B&N and a lot of the employees were pretty clueless and probably wouldn't know about that sort of thing.

Many people with inside knowledge have confirmed 7/7 - 7/27, so I think we are safe in anticipating these dates.

Have you ever had a time in your life where you somehow randomly ended up being befriended by an unfamiliar group of people and spent a few chaotic hours with them where you had no real idea what you were doing with them and where you were apprehensive about being drawn into a situation that was totally alien to your normal day-to-day routine?

If so, then you'll relate to Wake in Fright.
Wake in Fright is a superb viewing in terms of the escalating sense of dread and chaos that it exudes.
Not since my drinking days! But I would be at least as interested in your experience as I would be in the plotline of the film under discussion!

Dang, woulda been nice if the July 4th coupons had been valid during the sale. (Oops, CriterionBlues, we weren't supposed to post sequentially. My bad.)

Hiroshima mon amour will be my first purchase during the 50% off sale. It looks like the restoration is superb and I'm excited to dig through the new supplements. July 14th seems so far away, though...

Would I be correct in saying that the consensus on Shoah being something along the lines of powerful, and completely draining? That is what I have surmised so far browsing a few reviews. World War II is a specific interest of mine, so I am likely to pick this up during the upcoming sales. 500 some odd minutes of heavy documentary material does sound like quite a challenge though...

On an unrelated note, I finally sat down and watched Blow Out last night. LOVED it! DePalma did a fantastic job, and I had a blast just listening to the movie given the overt emphasis placed on it. I thought the ending was awesome as well.

Incredibly draining and time consuming, but really interesting and intriguing at times. I split it up over the course of two days.

Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Downslope’ Will Be Film Trilogy From Filmmaker Marc Forster

Quote:
The Downslope, Stanley Kubrick’s original screenplay written in 1956, is being developed as a feature trilogy with Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball, World War Z) attached to direct and produce the first in the series. He also will produce the subsequent features. The Downslope is said to be “a sweeping, historical action-drama” that Kubrick penned following the release of his allegorical war film Fear And Desire and prior to directing his seminal WWI period piece Paths Of Glory.

Kubrick — who died in 1999 — was, of course, one of the most notable filmmakers of our time. This is not the first time that one of his ideas has come to the screen after his death. In 2001, Steven Spielberg brought Kubrick’s vision of A.I. Artificial Intelligence to the screen via Kubrick’s longtime home, Warner Bros. This, however, is something that Kubrick had given to Spielberg after developing the story with numerous screenwriters over decades.

As only Kubrick could, the late filmmaker had spent years before his death studying, developing and writing the story for The Downslope. He even created maps and notes as to how he planned to shoot the movie. It is based on historical events and originally developed with renowned Civil War historian Shelby Foote. The project is said to have the full support from the Kubrick family.

An anti-war story, The Downslope focuses on a bitter, strategic series of Civil War battles in the Shenandoah Valley between young Union General George Armstrong Custer and Confederate Colonel John Singleton Mosby (known as the Gray Ghost for his stealth strategies). His cavalrymen, known as Mosby’s Rangers, continually outsmarted the much-larger enemy forces in a sequence of raids, which enraged Custer and eventually created a fierce cycle of revenge between the two men.

The films after that will expand upon the master filmmaker’s original story and journey west, as postwar Americans settled the new frontier, delivering on the country’s unbending ambitions and dreams of Manifest Destiny.

Lauren Selig — a producer on Lone Survivor and also the upcoming Everest — Barry Levine (Hercules, Oblivion) and Reneé Wolfe (All I See Is You) are developing the material with Forster. Selig initiated the project with producers/rights holders Phil Hobbs (Full Metal Jacket) and Steve Lanning, who are also serving as producers on the project.

Kubrick was Oscar-nominated four times for directing, five for writing and three for producing. His long list of incredible films includes Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut.

Welcome back Mr. M.!
Well, I'm just as clueless as you regarding Blind Chance, as I've never seen the film either. However, it will be a definite blind buy because Kieslowski, is just well, amazing. I loved his Three Colors trilogy and The Double Life of Veronique, which I consider the most stunning arthouse film ever made. I shouldn't use the word "arthouse", but for some reason his films are synonymous with this term. Shame on you for missing 274 pages on this thread. I at least try to keep up on a daily basis! Learn from jw007! Take care of Scarlett for me...

RIP James Horner - Really sad!

Looks like The New World will be the first films he's worked on in the collection...

(One of my favorite pieces from JH).

His earlier films in Poland before he went to France with Double Life of Veronique are not as polished (not to mention, he wasn't writing with Krzysztof Piesiewicz yet - the film was made in '81 but didn't come out until '87). But Blind Chance hits upon one of his most repeated themes of chance meetings and fate. It's a good film, one of his best pre-Decalogue, kind of like a Sliding Doors/Run Lola Run-type of thing where different scenarios play out to show how various changes in circumstance affect this guy's life.

A lot of that time is devoted to interviews with survivors of Nazi camps and such like, where similar information is repeated many many many times over, which depending on your perspective either adds to the effect or gets tedious. I am not interested in getting this for my personal collection as it is a significant historical and academic effort, but not something I would ever feel like returning to again. That's my two bits
