So elsewhere we've been discussing the "roadmap" pamphlets versus the booklets, which now appear to be going to the higher profile releases only (Chaplin, Resnais, etc.).

One person speculated that they are trying to trim their bottom line on printing costs for the small sellers, so that prompted us to try to figure out the sales figures. Of course the figures are not public, so this is all speculation, but I assume that the weakest sales are around 5k per title (not counting Eclipse) and probably the top sales around 100k (Wes Anderson types). The more famous art directors probably get somewhere in between, and the occasional high profile title (like A Hard Day's Night) might move more units.

Does anyone else have a more educated speculation?

As did I with the past dozen posts, for much the same reasons...

With all due respect.

This isn't accurate. Several of their recent high profile releases have pamphlets instead of booklets. There has to be a reason for some to get some and others not to, but I doubt it has to do with sales. If we use that logic, why did Time Bandits get such a unique lenticular cover for its digipack?

We noticed that Hiroshima Mon Amour got a booklet, but This is Your Life and The Bridge didn't.

I have a feeling Time Bandits was a good seller.

If it isn't sales, then frankly we're baffled and Criterion doesn't speak.

La dolce vita didn't get a booklet. It received a dorm room poster-like fold out.

I thought one of the reasons they're doing more pamphlets is the alleged discoloration of some blu-ray discs because of the enclosed booklets?

Watched Medium Cool today. Didn't think it was a great film but found it very interesting. A solid film.

That Hiroshima Mon Amour release looks absolutely sick. I mean, I was excited enough just because I love the film. But holy moly! Talk about loaded.

There's a good chance that this may end up being my favorite release EVER!

Vinyl has made a huge comeback in the last few years. I think with the advent of digital media, people are longing for records again, because they are a great alternative to this invisible, soulless format of today. I don't want to go on a tangent, but I feel that people who are Criterion lovers might also be appreciative of the vinyl format too...at least that is what has happened to me in the last few months! I suppose we people just have great taste, not just in the substance but the "style" as well (and appreciate the best/highest quality).

Just watched the bizarro Shortbus. Due to its notorious reputation as such an explicit (yet non-pornographic) film, I could see this maaaaaybe going Criterion. But as John Cameron Mitchell movies go, Hedwig and the Angry Inch wins every time.

Jeez, two pages of fart discussion in the Criterion thread. And so serious about it....not even one joke about Il Sore Asso starring Vittorio Gassman.

Perhaps someone could start a Farts in Film thread and take the discussion there?

In any case, pull my finger.

The booklets didn't cause the discolouration :P that was a problem with the disc manufacturers, otherwise Arrow, MoC etc would all have same issue, and they still have booklets ^^
