Agreed! That was bordering on distasteful. Perhaps he had the meter running on a taxi outside...

The cover art is one of the best ever, I think.

Absolutely. It looks like a complete winner, all around: Cover, comes with a booklet, awesome extras, great PQ, great AQ, and a totally fantastic film.

How does it get better?

It's being released smack in the middle of the July sale, that's how

After skipping pages of farts, I didn't realize this was probably kicked off by the Michael Cera video.

Shame he didn't shout-out La strada - in the (excellent) film Youth in Revolt his character Nick buys it at the store and describes it to some tools who come up to him.

FYI for any Ozu fans:

[Show spoiler]

Amazon Japan is clearing out their limited edition blu-rays of Late Autumn. I believe the book that comes with the limited editions is the same for all of them (I.e. not film specific). It ends up being somewhere between $40-$42 US shipped.

Late Autumn

Also, if you want to add something to the order, I highly recommend this. Hundreds of color Kurosawa illustrations and paintings for under $10. It's a small format but an excellent and affordable way to have the lion's share of his illustrations.

I've seen Shortbus. It caught me totally unawares; I knew nothing about it beforehand, really, except that it did have some "explicit sexual content" (which is the same thing I had been told about Don't Look Now) and The Reader, among other titles). As it unfolded, I kept thinking I should be offended, but I wasn't, and when it was over, my overall impression was that I had just watched something sweet and funny and even profoundly moving. I loved the music so much I bought the soundtrack.

I can conceive of it being added to the Criterion Collection. It's funny, really: I won't watch and have no desire to own Salò, or The 120 Days of Sodom because I feel certain I would find certain scenes obscene, disgusting and degrading ... which is probably the same perception some people might have of Shortbus, were the plot to be described to them before they had seen the movie. Ah, well, to each his own ...

Wow, that sounds extremely tempting. I've never imported a BD before. There's a first time for everything, though.

I'm out of Thanks for today, so ... thanks.

good thing you put the word 'excellent' parenthetically cause YiR was pretty bad.

he also aspires to be Jean Paul Belmondo in that film, too.

Don't hesitate if you're interested. They had 11 left yesterday evening, and only 6 left now. The shipping ends up being mostly free since they remove VAT prior to charging out of country orders. I've been waiting for months for this price drop. I already have the blu, but i want the book!

I'm sure Nobel Son makes it look like a Palme D'or winner.

Is Kagemusha worth a blind buy? I love Seven Samurai and Rashomon and I want to buy another Kurosawa during the sale.

Kagemusha is in my top 5-7 Kurosawas, but many in these parts were underwhelmed by it. I also really love the special feature that focuses on his story boards and illustrations.

Not in the same class as Ran imo.

...certainly worth seeing though.

Some pretty interesting subtext about homosexuality in ancient Japan.

OK, got it. Well, it hasn't shipped, but ordered it. And I was surprised that they estimate delivery either Monday or Tuesday. I was expecting a longer wait, considering. Again thanks.

Oh, btw, couldn't seem to order the book, for some reason. Of course, the whole experience is very confusing, since I can't read Japanese. Heh.

Does anyone recommend Thief. James Caan holds one of my favorite performances with Sonny in The Godfather

This appears to be pretty good confirmation of Jellyfish Eyes (sorry Polaroid), but it should be a little while since Janus is releasing it to theatres first.
