I always watch the film first even if there's an introduction. Then I always go to the Supplements and watch all of them, and then finally I'll watch the commentary. And I always watch the commentary. I don't usually watch the trailers. I'll read the booklets if the film really entices me and I want to study more, but I haven't been bothering with the roadmap style folder brochures. |

I've watched a couple and loved what I saw (well you know what I mean), he's so good at creating an a atmosphere and pouring so much emotion into it - Zbigniew Preisner's haunting scores really contribute to this in all the film he's worked on...
... Come on Criterion, we need a decent copy of this! I've only seen Three Colours and Double Life so far (not including Decalogue as I have yet to finish). So i'm excited about Sept releases ![]() Last edited by Polaroid; 06-27-2015 at 07:38 AM. |

A Master Builder Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() André Gregory & Wallace Shawn: 3 Films Blu-ray ![]() In my opinion, Vanya on 42nd Street remains Andre and Wally's best work together. A Master Builder is an interesting project, but if you are not familiar with their previous collaborations -- or Ibsen's play -- I would recommend renting it first before committing to a purchase. (Fans can order with confidence). The box set definitely comes recommended because there is plenty of excellent content and the price is right. Have a great weekend, guys ![]() |

I literally just finished The Bridge and I'm speechless. This is the ultimate anti-war movie. It is one if the most powerful movies I've ever seen. Im not an avid war movie watcher and when I do they tend to be anti-war (Paths of Glory, Pork Chop Hill & Apocolypse Now) films or in AN's case not really about combat. NONE of them compare or are are as sad as this.
The structure and pacing are engaging. The first forty-five minutes its just a basic high school movie. The boys are worried about girls and homework and then boom they get their papers and they are gone. Which I assume is how it was to be drafted. Im only 28 so I wasn't around then. 😜😜 The film moves so fast at this point you feel jolted and unsure just like the boys have to feel on the inside, but never showing it on the outside. These kids are so gung ho over a bridge that means nothing. They are so stirred up with nationalism and this fear of being deserters that they honestly lose their minds. It's literally their first day as recruits and they continue to have these warped dreams for the Fatherland while the Americans are right at their door steps. I really can't put into words whats going through my mind. Plus I don't know how to spoiler so I dont want to give anything away. Just the last twenty minutes are mind-blowing and the last ten are an emotional rollercoaster. If all of Bernhard Wicki's films are like this then Criterion needs to expand his entries into the collection. Watch this movie NOW! |

I finally got around to watching my Criterion Blu-ray of Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory, and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this scathing war film for the first time in several years.
Although I personally prefer The Killing because of its noir greatness, I believe that Paths of Glory is the film where Kubrick really hit his stride with regard to his wide angle photography and with his ability to convey cynical portrayals of evil or carelessness with just a touch of flair that often makes them seem overwrought in retrospect. Paths of Glory could easily be followed with the volume turned off, because the visuals have an expressionist touch to guide us along, but the power of the sound effects, especially during the Anthill charge, and the power of music, especially during the final scene, magnify the impact. A while back, someone else in this thread (whom I cannot remember) summed up Paths of Glory perfectly by saying that he had never felt this helpless while watching a film. |
