Just watched The Bridge, what a great film. We often think of Germany in War War 2 as a Hitler driven war machine. The Bridge explores the human side of regular Germans and the effect of an ongoing war headed towards defeat. Well directed and acted, a great addition to the Criterion Collection...looks very good in Blu .

Glad to hear the praise for The Bridge. My dad got me to read it as one of my first real books (I was probably around 12 or so) and I still clearly remember it. Will pick it up as a blind buy during the sale.

Can anyone explain why the spine for "An Autumn Afternoon" has that weird white stripe down the middle? I bought it in Hong Kong so just making sure it is supposed to look like that and I didn't buy a copy

Off topic but I don't know where else to ask: is the site being really slow for anyone else?

An Autumn Afternoon has a rather unusual spine configuration compared to most Criterion titles. The white stripe you are talking about extends about 1/3 of the length of the spine beginning at the top.

You're right - nothing wrong, but the fact that the front/back cover stretches a bit onto the spine left me wondering.

I just finished The Bridge.

Although the war genre is one of my least favorite genres, I thought that this was good, realistic film. In fact, I found the horrors of war depicted in the film to be so realistic that it is no wonder soldiers develop PTSD.

I may just have to pick up The Bridge during the B&N sale; it seems that everyone on here was pretty impressed by it. I was already interested in it, but now I'm even more so. I guess that means I'll be getting, at the very least, The Bridge and Hiroshima mon amour (which I already have pre-ordered).

My budget will be stretched thin next month, since I'm set to close on a new home in a couple of weeks, but I'm still pretty much set for The Killers, Hiroshima Mon Amour, and, probably, The Bridge while the 50% off sale is going on.

I'm intrigued by the positive reviews that I keep reading here for The Bridge, and it looks to be right up my alley.

That always bothered me, but also the lack of a good set of extras seeing as it was Ozu's last film.

I think it's cool how so many people have watched The Bridge recently and shared their thoughts on it. Usually it doesn't seem to happen where so many of us watch one film in a short time span. It would be potentially interesting if this happened more often, like a movie of the month type of deal. Just a thought.

This week, I only watched criterion movies...

Started of with The Big Chill, then Il Sorpasso & Walkabout (all library rentals)...

Then today my latest acquisitions Close-up & Don't Look Now.

Now I need to watch 1-2 good old blockbusters...

You should give Stagecoach a try.

I don't think that it's a stretch to say that about a third of movies made since Stagecoach have followed its blueprint. The idea of diverse characters who are thrown together due to random circumstances and are forced to deal with a common predicament has been repeated so many times, and Stagecoach was the first time that this idea had been used for a western. A few memorable examples are Speed, The Breakfast Club, and even the Firefly TV series.

Also, The Road Warrior and Mad Max: Fury Road are cinematic children of one pivotal scene in Stagecoach.

Just recently watched Firefly and Serenity, and it's uncanny how Whedon draws on Stagecoach thematically. You're right about the diverse group that has to become a community. There are even some similar characters, though most Westerns have them.

CONGRATULATIONS on the new house! Maybe you can write some Criterion into the mortgage an go wild in July. What part of Atlanta will you be in?

I have a suggestion. In this forum, there should be an assigned movie. We all watch it within a certain number of days. Let the film and supplements soak in. Then we can discuss what we think of the movie. What do you think?

I'm actually buying a place in Kennesaw, which is closer to where my new office is in Cartersville, closer to where my elderly parents live (since they're getting to that age where they need help on a more frequent basis), and just one mile alway from my favorite place in the world to run (Kennesaw Mountain). I live in Smyrna now, and the new place is only 10 miles farther outside the perimeter for those times when I want to go into the city for races, occasional movie showings, and such. I'll be walking distance from grocery stores and less than a mile away from a big 24-screen theater that occasionally features retro showings and indie flicks. Sadly, the Barnes & Noble in Kennesaw does not have a media section, but there are plenty of those just a little farther south. Of course, there's a Costco less than a mile away.

I'm not going to pop the champagne cork until after the closing, but all is going well so far. I've always rented, so this is my first rodeo when it comes to owning a home. I'm excited and freaked out at the same time. Mortgage + property taxes + home insurance will total less than what I'm currently paying for rent, but my movie funds are still going to take a nice hit because of routine home maintenance and upkeep stuff. I'll still have a good bit of disposable income, though, and God knows that I've got plenty of still-unwatched discs.
