I rewatched Sweet Smell of Success tonight having disliked it on my first watch and I couldn't be any more wrong in my assessment. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

These have both been on my Criterion wish list for a while. Definitely fits for Criterion as well.

The most fascinating thing about it is that the final shot of the film explains everything that happened before it. Many people miss that, though. One of my favorite films ever.

That's a final shot right up there with some of my favorites. And it's chilling.

I am going to disagree with the "need" to watch Repulsion before buying. Not bad advice, but not a necessity in this case. It is one of the most accessible and riveting films in the Criterion Collection. A blind buy for me that I went into fully prepared and was blown away. Do you like movies where the horror builds and pulls you in slowly? Do you like psychological suspense, including entering the mind of a main character who may or may not be imagining things? Do you like chills generated by acting, camera work, an excellent script, and not knowing what will happen next? Do you like atmospheric black and white cinematography that makes you realize the film could never be as effective as it is without it? Most of all, do you like Polanski?

If so, then Repulsion is for you.

I agree with everything you said, except you left out, "Do you like Catherine Deneuve?"

Really, if you look at her filmography -- over 100 feature films -- she's been a great deal of excellent movies. I only have 5, sadly: The three in Démy collection, Belle de Jour, and Repulsion. But considering that Belle, Repulsion, and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg are absolutely fantastic, it's enough to keep me going.

That is a given, and goes without saying.

I can't remember the last time I saw They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, but I do remember the first time. I was a freshman in high school. It was an English assignment of sorts, where our entire class was bussed to the theater (30 miles away) to see it. So that left an impression with me ... and it also kind of forced me to learn about the movie and the time period in which it takes place, since we had discussions of it after the viewing. I would love to revisit it. I remember it as being powerful.

You should check out Mississippi Mermaid from Twilight Time. Deneuve & Belmondo star & its directed by Truffaut. Its a great movie.

I've only seen Belle de Jour once and I didn't like it.

I honestly didn't think the acting or the writing were that good.

...don't hate me.

Aww, how could I hate you?

What I think is interesting about Belle du Jour, among many other things, is that Deneuve's character has some things in common with her character in Repulsion. And the story itself has a lot of surreal elements (well, it is Buńuel, after all ). I remember having a days long argument/discussion with a friend concerning
[Show spoiler]what parts of the story really happened, whether the entire brothel story was her dealing with her past abuse, what was real, what wasn't, etc.
and the like. It's a really fun movie to try and break down.

Anyways, we all like different stuff. No hate.

Default Andre and Shawn

Is the 3 films of Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn worth a blind buy?

All three films are incredibly deep and rewarding, but they are most definitely not for everyone.

Goodness no, I just watched My Dinner with Andre (probably the best-known of the 3, thinking "I'll for sure enjoy at least THIS one!") and couldn't wait for it to end. Was not feeling it at all.

Haven't seen the other 2 yet but Andre at least scared me straight enough away from any more blind buys in the near future.

I've only seen Vanya on 42nd Street and simply thought it was okay. I don't really have a desire to watch it ever again.

A Christmas Tale is another brilliant film of hers.

I really enjoy My Dinner with André and think of it as the best of the three.

I was pleasantly surprised by A Master Builder, but I did not like Vanya on 42nd Street.
