Watched The Confession and State of Siege both by Costa-Gavras. The Confession is a very interesting political thriller and I would recommend it. State of Siege is def the inferior film just not as interesting nor as well acted

"Spirit of the Beehive" would be a big one. I'd love to see that on blu. I have to think it's coming shortly. "Mishima" by Paul Schrader is expected to come soon, I believe. That will be absolutely stunning in HD. "Man Bites Dog" is a brutal, but hilarious satire. If you like your comedy black, it's about as black as it gets.
Some other obscure Criterion titles that probably won't get a BD upgrade soon are "Under the Volcano", "Schizopolis" and "Secret Honor". "Under the Volcano" is a harrowing portrayal into the depths of alcoholism featuring an awesome performance from Albert Finney. John Huston directed it and the PQ is pretty good. Wouldn't hesitate picking it up if you're interested. "Schizopolis" is one of my favorite Soderbergh films. Just a brilliant satire/surrealist journey. Love that film. PQ is acceptable. I could see this getting upgraded given Soderbergh's high profile. And "Secret Honor" is one of Altman's hidden gems from his obscure 80s period. It's a one man performance with Philip Baker Hall as Richard Nixon essentially giving an extended monologue as he becomes increasingly drunk. PBH is absolutely masterful. The PQ is poor, but this is an extremely obscure film that I can't see getting a BD upgrade soon. Last edited by mja345; 07-11-2015 at 09:07 PM. |

That's not a "narrow to two" list. That's a "buy all" list. Sorry.

If I recall correctly, Mishima was supposed to get an upgrade once the dvds sold down since at the time it would have been a dual release. I wonder how that time frame changed when duals went away?

I just saw my first Luis Buñuel film, Tristana. I loved it! I've never seen a movie like that before. I can't explain it. The editing and cinematography were amazing. The way the camera moved was smooth and unpredictable. I just don't know why I liked it so much. Any recommendations for another Luis Buñuel film?

I like Maketa Lazarova and I think World on a Wire is Fassbinder's best film (from what I've seen), but I was lukewarm towards Sansho the Bailiff (although it's better, in my opinion, than Life of Oharu). |

I'd give Oharu another watch. When I first watched it, I was lukewarm to is (ala your opinion towards Sansho). But watching it a second time was a revelation. Firstly, I never noticed how brilliant the acting of Kinuyo Tanaka was until that rewatch. Also, the film is beautiful in so many ways to the eye. Sansho, while excellent, doesn't hold up for me as much as Mizoguchi's other work.
