Watched The Confession and State of Siege both by Costa-Gavras. The Confession is a very interesting political thriller and I would recommend it. State of Siege is def the inferior film just not as interesting nor as well acted .

I honestly don't see "The Ruling Class" or "Daniel Webster" getting BD upgrades any time soon though. I could see "Short Cuts" getting one.
Yeah, I can't see The Ruling Class being upgraded anytime soon either. Short Cuts is definitely a strong possibility though.

The films I really want Criterion to upgrade ASAP are as follows, in alphabetical order:

And The Ship Sails On

Andrei Rublev

Au Hasard Balthazar

Bicycle Thieves(yes it's coming, i know)

A Film Trilogy By Bergman

I Fidanzati

Jeanne Dielman

Juliet Of The Spirits

Knife In The Water

Man Bites Dog

Mouchette(yes it's available through A.E, but I want features too)

My Own Private Idaho

Night On Earth

Le Notti Bianche

Le Samourai

The Spirit Of The Beehive

Taste Of Cherry(the trilogy is coming, i know)

Young Mr.Lincoln

"Spirit of the Beehive" would be a big one. I'd love to see that on blu. I have to think it's coming shortly. "Mishima" by Paul Schrader is expected to come soon, I believe. That will be absolutely stunning in HD. "Man Bites Dog" is a brutal, but hilarious satire. If you like your comedy black, it's about as black as it gets.

Some other obscure Criterion titles that probably won't get a BD upgrade soon are "Under the Volcano", "Schizopolis" and "Secret Honor". "Under the Volcano" is a harrowing portrayal into the depths of alcoholism featuring an awesome performance from Albert Finney. John Huston directed it and the PQ is pretty good. Wouldn't hesitate picking it up if you're interested. "Schizopolis" is one of my favorite Soderbergh films. Just a brilliant satire/surrealist journey. Love that film. PQ is acceptable. I could see this getting upgraded given Soderbergh's high profile. And "Secret Honor" is one of Altman's hidden gems from his obscure 80s period. It's a one man performance with Philip Baker Hall as Richard Nixon essentially giving an extended monologue as he becomes increasingly drunk. PBH is absolutely masterful. The PQ is poor, but this is an extremely obscure film that I can't see getting a BD upgrade soon.

I'm quite happy with the dvd I picked up years ago, but if the picture is a huge improvement I would definitely upgrade Mishima.

Spirit Of The Beehive is coming. I hope El Sur is too.

I'd love to see a month where they announce an upgrade to Spirit of the Beehive and a release of El Sur. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will come at some point. Criterion likes to do that, as they released tandem releases of Costa Gavras and are doing that with Bruce Beresford in a couple months. Erice deserves a month like that.

I'd like to see upgrades for Viridiana, Ugetsu and Pandora's Box. The latter is OOP on DVD, but hopefully they still have the rights.

Speaking of Under the Volcano and Huston, I'd like to see Wise Blood on blu as well (but will probably not happen)

I'm absolutely dumbfounded as to what to get this sale. Trying to narrow this list to two.

Hiroshima Mon Amour
Sansho the Bailiff
In The Mood For Love
Marketa Lazarova
World on a Wire

Still Walking?

That's not a "narrow to two" list. That's a "buy all" list. Sorry.

If I recall correctly, Mishima was supposed to get an upgrade once the dvds sold down since at the time it would have been a dual release. I wonder how that time frame changed when duals went away?

I just saw my first Luis Buñuel film, Tristana. I loved it! I've never seen a movie like that before. I can't explain it. The editing and cinematography were amazing. The way the camera moved was smooth and unpredictable. I just don't know why I liked it so much. Any recommendations for another Luis Buñuel film?

I haven't seen Hiroshima mom amour, but I can definitively say that In the Mood for Love and Still Walking are safe buys.

I like Maketa Lazarova and I think World on a Wire is Fassbinder's best film (from what I've seen), but I was lukewarm towards Sansho the Bailiff (although it's better, in my opinion, than Life of Oharu).

Belle de jour is his best film, in my opinion. Un chien andalou is great, too.

I'd give Oharu another watch. When I first watched it, I was lukewarm to is (ala your opinion towards Sansho). But watching it a second time was a revelation. Firstly, I never noticed how brilliant the acting of Kinuyo Tanaka was until that rewatch. Also, the film is beautiful in so many ways to the eye. Sansho, while excellent, doesn't hold up for me as much as Mizoguchi's other work.

If I had to recommend one Buñuel film it would have to be Viridiana, which I believe to be his masterpiece. Based on your enjoyment of Tristana, I would also recommend watching Diary Of A Chambermaid.
