Whatever it is they are announcing tomorrow i just want a box set to be happy

We know there is one for November, and hopefully another one for December like some previous years, that would be great.

To the question of which boxset?... surprise me

Edit: Lol i didn't even read CriterionBlues post saying almost the same, i swear

Friends of Eddie Coyle...or French Connection?

It has been a long time since I saw The French Connection, but for what its worth, I prefer Coyle. Mind you, that Coyle isnt going to change your life, but it is a very solid 70's crime drama that flies under the radar for the most part.

Filmmusic - my hunch would be to say that you wouldn't be enamored w/ it, especially if you say you dont like Mitchum much. For me, It is great to see a Hollywood legend in a late career role really killin' it - like Paul Newman in The Verdict.

You know, that's kind of where I'm at this month, too. As far as my most-wished-for list, it's the same old same old. My Number One want was an upgrade of Night and the City with the extended, recut British version included as a bonus, and I'm still in shock that Criterion is giving me exactly what I wanted. That one came straight out of the blue, and I'm still bruised from pinching myself!

So now it's someone else's turn to get what they want, and I hope that happens tomorrow. Whatever Criterion announces, I'll be pleased. I hope there's some good stuff that people have been waiting for, because whatever is released in October will be newly available for the November 50% off sale at B&N. But if there's nothing that strikes my personal fancy, I've actually amassed a long list of titles I still want to acquire, so it will all be good in the long run. Fingers crossed for all of you here!

Heh. No worries. I'm just glad I'm not the only one with single disc fatigue. Not that they listen to us.

Since it's the October announcements I'd love one (or more) of the cult horror titles-Carnival of Souls, Equinox, Fiend Without a Face to be upgraded along with Vampyr.

I would love carnival of souls to be upgraded. I saw it years ago when getting into Criterion and thought it was spectacular. Some of the first 200 spine numbers I feel have either been forgotten about or swept under the rug so we pay attention to all their new titles.

I feel Criterion are missing out on reinvigorating their early titles. A lot of us would love to see some love for them. Plus, if they still have the distribution rights, why are they sitting on these titles they haven't done anything with in like a decade?

Okay, rant over

I'd be so happy to read one of those titles in tomorrow's announcement:

- Ikiru
- Red Beard
- The Bad Sleep Well
- Stray Dog
- Drunken Angel
- Cure (although I've only heard great things, never seen it)
- Imamura Box-Set

Its not up to Criterion. They mainly rely on restorations done by the studios or other third parties. If there aren't any available for a title, they're not going to release it.

By my count, out of the first 200 spines, 44 are OOP. Out of the 156 titles remaining, Criterion has released approximately 72 on BD.

With the recent tease it looks like Se7en will return to the collection in October as spine 777.

I'd be up for that & 777 would be a perfect spine # for it just like I felt 666 was the perfect Spine # for The Devils Backbone.

I just went to a local sell/trade shop and sold my mint condition copy of Insomnia that I bought two days ago, in order to finance my purchase of Ex Machina.

I won't even tell you what they gave me for it.

Needless to say I walked out of that shop with a giant pit in my stomach.

...it made me sick.

I'm suspicious that, since her sister's passing, the elderly Harper Lee is now being taken advantage of by different attorneys and advisers who do not have her best interests at heart. An official investigation by the state of Alabama asserted that Harper Lee is still in full control of her mental facilities, and that she is excited about the book finally being in print, but the timing of the publication still sets off my spider-sense.

I'm basically curious about whether or not Go Set a Watchman was a "prototype" work that was ultimately discarded when the decision was made to flesh out the characters in a different sense altogether for To Kill a Mockingbird. Authors do this quite a bit, by going down one particular road of prose only to realize that one of the side roads turns into a better story. If Go Set a Watchman was merely a stepping stone in the thought process that led to the masterpiece that was To Kill a Mockingbird, then I'm not sure if I want to read it.
I know that I talk a good game, but curiosity got the best of me. I pulled the trigger on Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman while I was in the store to buy Hiroshima Mon Amour and The Black Stallion. 40% off the cover price was a strong lure, and I'll need something to do when I'm hanging around my mostly empty new home in a couple of days while technicians are replacing the air conditioning unit.

Is there supposed to be a booklet/leaflet with The Killers, because mine's empty?

I like The French Connection, but don't love it.

...the car chase is the best part of the movie imo.

The French Connection. It was a groundbreaking film in its day because from a visual perspective, it was shot like a documentary, not like a Hollywood thriller. And for its time, it has one of the greatest car chases ever filmed (under the elevated train lines near Coney Island) and the U.S. scenes were all shot on the streets of NYC - no CGI (obviously) or green screen whatsoever and while I don't know this to be 100% accurate, it doesn't seem like any studio sets were used at all (aside from the interior of a plane) - it looks like it was all location. It also has a brilliant soundtrack and score. And then there's the unbelievable performance by Gene Hackman who was supposedly so upset at having to act so brutally, he almost quit the film. It won't have the same impact today as it did when it was released, because so many other films have copied its style, but still a great, great film loosely based on a true story and a gritty New York City that doesn't really exist anymore. The real cops involved, Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, have cameos in the film.

I bet, that's mostly why I stopped going to places like that & prefer to sell/trade on here. You didn't like Insomnia? I also blind bought that since I love the Nolan version. The 1 blind buy I regret from this sale so far is Dont Look Now, trying to trade that one now. My next blind buys are gonna be Thief, The Friends of Eddie Coyle & Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. I'm pretty sure those will be safe blind for me.

Maybe you should sign up for a free hulu plus trial and check it out for yourself, assuming Coyle is on there.

You can also check out many of the other films you keep asking about and judge for yourself. Just a suggestion. You have plenty of time. Still two weeks left in the sale.

These are all just opinions of others after all. And my opinion is there is a hell of a lot more to the French Connection that makes it a great movie than the car chase. I also really dig The Friends of Eddie Coyle. I own both and really enjoy both. Different films, so saying one is better than the other is meaningless to me.
