Like Fred Zinnemann's The Day of the Jackal.

Don't Look Now might be classified as horror but there's nothing "horror" about it imo. Suspensful, atmospheric is more like it.

I completely agree. I went into it the first time thinking it was gonna be some horrifying film but i wasn't scared at any point really but I'm not sure Roeg is the director for me. I was exhausted after finishing Don't Look Now though

With Universal's announcement of their forthcoming re-release of Spartacus (dual format edition) from a 4K master, I guess that makes a Criterion blu-ray a little less likely.

Or does it? Other Criterion titles, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Traffic, and Dazed and Confused are also available from other companies in Region A.

There's a chance but it won't be out in 2015 or 2016.

Any ideas for a blind buy in the suspense/thriller/tense melodrama (made that one up) camp? I need to pick up some blind buys this sale. I almost bought Shock Corridor when picking up Hiroshima Mon Amour today but ended up getting Tokyo Story because I have put off upgrading way too long. Any thoughts or recommendations? I don't see people talk much about Shock Corridor. Blind buy material?

Im going with
Mulholland Drive
The Brood
Some *classic b&w* horror film
An upgrade to one of their horror / sci fi titles, even including the Devil and Daniel Webster
a few non horrors from name directors...maybe even Le Samourai !

A lot of people admire Fuller, but I am sadly not one of them.

I think Pickup on South Street is probably the best from what I've seen, followed by The Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor, the latter two of which I have no interest in ever rewatching.

Here's my 3rd haul for the B&N July summer sale!

This could be my last one too... I picked up the brand new release Hiroshima Mon Amour and two other very recent releases by Criterion: Stage of Siege and Le Silence de la Mer. The former was a total last minute impulse/blind buy purchase, but political thrillers interest me. I am also a fan of Melville and happy to own all of his Criterion blu-rays that are now out of print, so this one was a no brainer! I'm really psyched for the Resnais film though as I read so many great things on this release.

I was able to use the "$5 off $50 or more" coupon so each of these came out to about $16.32 before tax.

Id love to but the BD of Eddie Coyle seems to be sold out in every B&N store in NYC as well as online so im unable to get ahold of it. That was the one I was most looking forward to picking up also.

Robert Siodmak's 1946 version of The Killers looks exquisite on the Criterion Blu-ray transfer, and I could not be any happier with this presentation.

The Killers is a shadowy film noir that needed to spring to life on Blu-ray, and this presentation does just that. The improvements over the old Criterion DVD are quite remarkable, in fact.

This is such a great movie, and it put two noir standout actors, Burt Lancaster and Edmond O'Brien, on the map, in addition to giving the beautiful actress, Ava Gardner, a femme fatale role that made the most of her screen presence. Albert Dekker, who plays a heist ringleader, is also well known for his roles in the Criterion titles, Kiss Me Deadly and The Furies. Sam Levene, who plays a police lieutenant, is also featured in Sweet Smell of Success.

"Don't ask a dying man to lie his soul into Hell."

I'm looking forward to revisiting the 1964 film tonight after going through the extras for this original movie.

Default Five Easy Pieces

So I was in a young Jack Nicholson mood last night. I can't remember the last time I saw Five Easy Pieces, but wouldn't doubt if it was back in the 1970s. With the recent stand-alone release fresh in mind, that's what I chose to watch (... out of my BBS box set). I have to admit that I didn't remember most of it, so it was almost like watching the film new again. It was fun to watch "Jack" before he was a well known star ... a superstar in the making. Very good movie from a great era in films!

It reminded me of another Jack Nicholson film from that same era that I don't believe has ever been released on blu-ray yet, and would be a wonderful addition to the Criterion Collection. I'm talking about The Last Detail. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

I'm really only hoping for The Virgin Spring or a Powell & Pressburger film today. It's been far too long since the last release of the latter (2 1/2 years with Colonel Blimp).

That was one of the titles mentioned in a deal between Sony and Mill Creek a year or three ago. I can't recall reading anything about it since though.

Mill Creek has been sitting on the rights to that for a couple of years now, and frankly, it's starting to piss me off. Really great Hal Ashby film that doesn't get mentioned very much. Strong performances by Nicholson, and also a young Randy Quaid.

Picked up Hiroshima mon amour today, and the packaging looks even more beautiful in person. Definitely, one of my favorite jobs Criterion has done. Was also going to pick up Persona, but didn't pull the trigger. Then I come home to rent it on Amazon instant video, and now I have to go back to pick it up. It's now my favorite Bergman.

That's right! I remember reading about it. I would think it would be big news when/if it actually happens.
