Default Costa gavras?

Will we get that "clues to solving Mulholland Drive" paper like the DVD brought lol?

My Real question: has anyone bought/watched the two new Costa Gavras CC releases? If so which was better? I liked Missing and loved Z so I wanna watch more of his films.

Thanks J

I bought both last week. Haven't had the time to watch them yet. Real Life keeps getting in the way.

Honestly the three you have picked out aren't as good as the three you're deciding on. I love all 3 and can't choose.

By far The Confession is the better film...not even close imo.

I gave La Dolce Vita a blind buy tonight. I'm not a huge Fellini fan (the film of his I enjoyed the most was actually Juliet of the Spirits) but nearly everyone I've talked to says this is a classic movie, so I'll have to see for myself.

I'll probably give Gates of Heaven / Vernon, Florida a blind buy before the sale ends because I love Morris's other documentaries and the subject matter seems very interesting. I just hope the execution is worth it (though this is Errol Morris we're talking about).

I like all these films. All are impressive, and all are different, so you cannot go wrong with any of the three. But for me, Ace in the Hole is hands down the top choice if there can be only one. It is directed by Billy Wilder, which makes it an automatic win, and stars Kirk Douglas in a defining role. Most importantly, it is a classic of American cinema that, like Wilder's other great film noir Sunset Boulevard, expanded the boundaries of the genre beyond the usual suspects of shadowy private eyes, morally conflicted hoods, and lipsticked dames ready to put a man six feet under with a purse gun.

Yes, me, too! I've always been interested in it, initially because of Mastroianni's Oscar-nominated performance and its nomination as the Best Foreign Language Film of 1977. My curiosity was revived again more recently after it received the Best Restored Film prize at the 2014 Venice Film Festival. I've never had the opportunity to catch it in revival, so the Criterion release will provide me with my first chance to finally see it after many years of reading glowing reviews.

Definitely in for Mulholland Drive, The Brood, and Kwaidan.

I hope KWAIDAN's success bodes well for an eventual Blu upgrade of ONIBABA as well. ONIBABA is just an absolute masterpiece of mood, atmosphere and stark B/W photography - to experience it in HD would be mind-blowing. Hate to be the guy who, after such great announcements that we had today, still says "but what about this one?" But I couldn't resist. Very happy with this month's announcements.

Onibaba is also near or at the top of my remaining "Most Wanted Criterion Upgrades".

The Bridge showed up this afternoon, so I popped it in tonight after dinner and just finished watching. I have to say, it was somewhat underwhelming for me. The major points of the movie hit home pretty well for me, such as the absurd waste of life that was the end of World War II when Germany was already beaten but continued to throw lives into the carnage until it was utterly spent. I also thought the film did a good job of capturing the uncertainty and desperation of the German citizens at the end of the war. The film was beautifully shot, and there were moments where the score did a fantastic job of building tension.

There was just something about the "over the top" nature of the acting in this movie that put me off a bit, especially with the children. It really took me out of the experience and I found it almost distracting.

That isn't to say that this movie is unlikeable by any means. This was a total blind buy for me, so perhaps my expectations were a bit unrealistic. Either way, I doubt I will revisit this one.

Is there a good reason for Sisters not being out already? We know they've done the transfer, because it's on Arrow's UK release. All they have to do is film some new interviews with De Palma and Margot Kidder, etc. Maybe they're searching for other archival or vintage supplements but I don't see the reason for taking this long. With Dressed to Kill coming out next month and it not being included in this October announcement, I'm worried it'll be at least a year, if not more, till we see it.

Because they can only release a limited number of films each month?

not sure why people have such a hard on for Hard Eight. I enjoyed it when I saw it - even thought that it was quite good for a first feature film, but really... are people going to buy this film and watch it once a year or so? or are people just asking for something else that they know? of course, people all 'collect' differently and maybe some others truly love this film.. I'm just of the mindset that there's more to life than PTA, Malick, and Lynch.

Thanks for the coupon link yesterday guys we ended up getting Mad Mad Mad World for $14.

However, do they think that movie comes with enough discs? I mean, sure, the box says it is almost as long as a Peter Jackson film, but 5 discs?
