With all of the excitement regarding yesterday's announcement, I missed the pre-order listing of Fellini's Casanova being produced by Mr. Bongo Films.

While its not explicitly stated, it may be that the master used by Arrow was originally prepared by Criterion for their SD release of the film, so it's not a high priority for them to use it for a BD release.

Nice set of announcements to wake up to this morning (completely forgot yesterday was the 15th). Like most, I'm super excited about Mulholland Dr.! I've yet to go back through the posts, but I'm sure there was great rejoicing. Also glad to see My Own Private Idaho and A Special Day.

In other Criterion news. The wife and I watched Eating Raoul last night. It was one of 3 discs she bought for me for our anniversary. It was quite the funny/zanny film. I can how in 1982 it could have been quite the controversial, and edgy film. We both really enjoyed the absurdity of
[Show spoiler]the ease of killing and disposing of the bodies. And the juxtaposition of how normal they wanted to be (or thought they were) against what they were doing.
Just a very enjoyable film. One I'm glad to own, and will see myself watching again.

Casetopia in the USA sells Criterion cases and ships internationally, but it appears that you need to create an account to find out which countries they ship to. If the disc is scratched, though, would you not want a replacement for that, as well... or, does the disc still play as it should?

Unfortunately, that is where I see most Naruse films ending up. But, alongside Seven Samurai and Tokyo Story, Floating Clouds is consistently ranked as the best Japanese film ever made so I think they'd probably put that one out on the mainline.

Not exactly film related, but thought collectors may be interested. I picked one of these up on eBay last night to display over my Criterion collection. The seller had two available. Original street signs...

Yeah, I would definitely choose Hiroshima mon amour and Ace in the Hole, and then one of the others.

Still waiting for my copy of Black Stallion to ship. I hate buying from companies that sit on orders indefinitely. And for some reason I can't get the B&N site to load on my laptop - I just get a blank white screen. Grr

Mr. Bongo Films? I love Fellini but I've never heard of this company. Are they any good?

And in defense of Hard Eight, while I'm not a big fan of the film, I think my inner idealist would love to live in a world where every film gets a decent home video release. Sadly, it looks like the studios aren't willing to put in the effort for some of the films of PTA, Malick, Lynch, and others. Even if I don't buy them, I'm glad Criterion is out there fighting the good fight and doing the Lord's work.
being that this is not reality, the point I'm trying to make is that, with all respect to PTA, Malick, and Lynch, who have all made films that I love, there are infinitely more films more deserving of a blu-ray release (by anyone) than Hard Eight or Lost Highway.

another poster, Fellini912, put it well once, he stated that he felt like Lynch is a "gateway director." While Lynch has done some good work, there is so much else out there to explore - a lot of stuff in the same vein and a lot of it better, too. you acknowledged that it is Criterion's "job" to introduce us to new films. its a job that they are pretty darn good at, too. they earned their reputation, in fact, by championing some of these relatively lesser known great films (not by, mind you, releasing films like The Brood or bottom of the barrel titles by mainstream directors.)

so why not cheer them on to continue to release new and different stuff?

Yep, exactly. For that reason alone, they should at least give us a stand alone DVD of it. But it's been so long since When a Woman Ascends the Stairs.

From what I understand, Naruse did not sell well at all for Masters of Cinema, so that does not bode well for Criterion giving them prestige treatment, which is truly unfortunate. All of these films deserve proper releases and are worthy of the collection.

That said, I think Naruse could be a higher-than-average Eclipse seller (which probably isn't saying much), so I wouldn't be surprised if a box similar to the fake image becomes reality.

You send $5 to Criterion and they send you replacement covers/booklets/cases etc...

Regarding B&(not)N, they often send out used returns when you buy online. Disgraceful service.

I'm very excited about Kwaidan, perfect film for Halloween night. The cover is stunning too.

It's been awhile since Criterion announced titles I was actually interested in. I'll be blind buying The Brood, Mulholland Drive, and Kwaidan during the next Criterion sale.

My dad was very generous during this current sale. He surprised my with a bunch of titles I wanted:
-Cries and Whispers
-Wild Strawberries
-Two Lane Blacktop
-Topsy-Turvy
-Don't Look Now
-Ikiru (DVD)
-Haxan (DVD)
-Red Beard (DVD)

Not particularly. Their recent Chimes At Midnight disc has been poorly received.
