SD Tour 2010!
finally finished out my Criterion Bergman's and Godard's.
so happy.
Nice. GODARD!

I still need a few Bergmans to finish. Of course I have all of the Godards.

Man, it is really tempting to buy stuff during this sale. I didn't want to. I might place an order tomorrow.

Wow, that's bad. Most of the people on that forum seem to love the smell of their own farts.

I can't bring myself to buy Criterion sds anymore unless they are on sale.
I mean it just feels so much better to buy them at 50% off.
it brings them to where they SHOULD be in the first place imo.
if Criterion had a better exchange program I would buy more.
I'm just too worried about a blu being announced even though I feel pretty confident about some of these remaining sd forever.

I still don't own any Criterion on regular DVD. I'm afraid if I buy a few I'll just go overboard like I do with Blu-Ray. Though I am tempted to pickup a few for this B&N sale.

Anyone know if you still get an in-store 10% off Criterion films for members?

Yes, you do. Not only that, you can also use $5 off coupons on $20+ titles (which includes all blurays) for additional discount. So, $40 MSRP titles will set you back $13, and boxsets with $70 MSRP about $26.50. This is before taxes, of course.

I think the tide has turned over there recently. There are a lot of folks who expect releases to be Blu-ray (the way it should be ).

One thing that frustrates me is how often posts are moved to different threads

All in all, not a bad site. There are some cool people there but don't take anything too seriously.

What made the whole Blu-Ray bashing over there really absurd is that EVERY Criterion release comes out on standard DVD. Why they would feel so threatened by Blu-Ray I have no clue.

In that case, I recommend not buying DVD because once you start...it's going to get very, I mean VERY expensive and space consuming. Trust me on this! Hehe...

But I will say that the caveat is you will miss out on a lot of awesome films.

They are hardcore cineaste. They love watching movies on the big screen and some feel that people are trying to replace the excitement of watching movies on the big screen at home. But also, there are many who own many DVD's and the fact that they have to replace so many can be upsetting.

And last, many of these people have no intention of spending money on hardware to view 1080p or to listen to lossless. Sure prices have gotten cheaper and I've tried to point these out in various forums but even if you try to explain, it's like a foreign language to their ears.

So, this is where they need to experience Blu-ray with their own eyes and ears.

It's cool if their justification for not going to Blu-ray is purely financial but if it's for ludicrous reasons, then more than likely, I tend to jump-in to those debates.

But by saying that... it works the other way around. You guys know me already to know that irks me when people on here will only buy the Blu-ray of Criterion and will not seek out a classic film on DVD because it's on DVD and not HD. When people make a basis of a director's work of what they see on Blu-ray but then will never watch other films by that director because it's not on BD definitely irks me. But at the same time, I don't get into arguments about it either. Because really, you do what you have to do for your own life and live accordingly. So, I'm not going to get all judgmental or bent up about it. Irked but nothing major. To each their own.

And for some cineaste that only purchase DVD's, I know a few who have commented when they see the movies discussed on the forums as a group of troglodytes with no sense of cinema and I suppose for some, its been a bit vexing for them.

I personally feel no need to polemicize with movie fans of their likes or dislikes, nor do I care to debate the significance or insignificance of American cinema vs. cinema from another country. Many people of those forums do and to each their own.

But it's one of the reasons what I do enjoy about this thread and various other threads and that is to expose people to movies that they would usually never see, that there is a whole world out there of films being made. They may not make a ton of money nor do they get a lot of attention but it's all about breaking out of one's own paradigm and experiencing other films out there...may it be on BD or DVD.

I've seen the pics of your collection and trust me, mine could never get that big. I simply don't have the space for that many movies. You really need to get some new storage for those Criterion and other classic films. Those shelves look like they are on the verge of collapse!

The original "King Kong" just started on TCM. Following that, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" with Lon Chaney is on. I know these aren't Criterion titles, but a lot of you gents love the old classics as much as I do. Wanted to give a heads up.

Hello,

Why don't you consider getting the UK Blu-ray release of The Red Balloon/White Mane? It is a terrific package and a wonderful upgrade over the Criterion releases?

It is also Region-Free:

Hehe... Next time I will buy better wood. I know nothing about wood materials and it was the most inexpensive way for a growing collection. Granted, that would be so f'd up if I am killed by my own DVD's falling on top of me. What a way to go... Death by cinema!

Well I do notice you live in California. Those probably need to be quake resistant. Otherwise we might have the first recorded "death by classic film collection."

Well the thread was started December 2008 so it appears a little over 3 pages per day. Guess that can vary widely. I imagine the number was much lower 2 years ago than it is now. And with the current sale going on it seems there are many pages each day.

And for anyone who doesn't own it yet, after all of that, The Seventh Seal comes on.

I post as Blood Pie over there (although I haven't logged in months. I occasionally lurk the MoC threads to see what Nick has to say) and I used to partake in the debate until it became clear that the logic being presented wasn't sound. The same people calling Blu Ray too expensive of an investment are the same people who drop my mortgage payment in one month on DVDs. They are DVD crackheads who have no patience to wait for titles to hit blu and they are pissed they have to upgrade equipment and titles. And the worst, as others have mentioned, was when I was told buying Blu Rays was a vulgar act of class warfare. Utter stupidity at its finest.

The sad part is that in every debate I took part in I always said I have no personal issue with DVDs or Criterion (or any company) releasing them...to each his own. As long as Blus are being pumped out I'm happy. Often times I would get involved because the "in crowd" would spout the most ridiculous arguments about the format that were simply not true (like old films not seeing an upgrade from blu, 24p not being a big deal, the audio being pointless). Often times I felt like it was 2006 and the format war was still going on with some of the stupid things being said.

Personally, I don't buy DVDs because they look and sound terrible to mediocre when stacked up against Blu Ray. It has nothing to do with being a format fanboy. Between the library, Netflix snail mail, Netflix streaming, and the internet I can watch almost anything I want. There is no need to waste my hard earned money on a title that will likely receive the upgrade if not sooner than later. I'm patient. ANd if the bug to watch something I truly love but don;t own because its DVD only arises than I revert to the outlets mentioned above. And TBH, with two kids, car payments, a mortgage, travel, comics, music, fun, drinking, and so on I don't have absurd amounts of money to drop on Blu anyway so its not a big deal from that perspective either. Im behind by at least 15 to 20 titles that I want to own right now with triple that coming in the pipelines. I have more than enough to keep me busy. That being said, outside of joking around I could care less if DVDs are still being produced and if you choose to buy them.
