I'm getting ready to add some shelves over the cabinet for the boxed sets. That will buy me some time. I also ordered this sign to go over the Criterion corner.

For me its:

Magnolia
Boogie Nights
There Will Be Blood
Hard Eight
The Master
Inherent Vice
Punch-Drunk Love

Please keep in mind that even my least favorite of his films is still a great film...he hasn't made anything below average. Not even average. All his films are above average without question.

This release of Hiroshima mon amour is insane. Not only is it a brilliant film, utterly re-watchable, provocative and thought-provking, but the commentary by Peter Cowie is just perfect, and the supplements are ideal. Then you've got the booklet. Between DVDs and Blu-Rays, I don't know how many Criterions I have, but it's a lot. This may very well be my favorite. It's right up there with Breathless.

THAT being said....

That Bates is also responding in the same way as I am must surely suggest that the problem lies with your point tho? Or are both of us mistaken?

BUT WHAT IS YOUR POINT?!? Mulholland Dr. is a positive example of crossover cultural success surely? You said you were a fan of it, so presumably that playing on a mainstream platform like a multiplex cinema is a good thing?! Surely that contradicts the spoon fed remark?! I'M CONFUSED!

Ozu (alongside Kurosawa) is pretty much the first thing one would encounter when exploring classic Japanese cinema. He's certainly among the most famous, with Tokyo Story one of the first Japanese films any young cinephile will likely have a run in with. I'd say the same was true of Bunuel, regarding experimental cinema or surrealism. Un Chien Andalou is a film studies staple, while DISCREET and OBSCURE are staples of world cinema. I know that for me Bunuel led to Guy Maddin, Stan Brakhage, etc.

For me my test is my (non-cinephile) wife. If she knows who someone is then I'd say they were pretty well-known.
okay. I understand now how you are defining gateway. makes sense. all good. I don't know if you recall the post I made about when my Best of Bogart blu-ray set came in the mail... I told my wife about it and told her that she would enjoy Casablanca. When we sat down to watch the movie, she thought it was French. the problem was that she got confused between BO-gart and GO-dard. So, I can't run the same test on my wife. Pardon my digression.

regarding my point, and it may have to do with my level of regard for Hard Eight... I, personally, am more excited when those bells ring in my head that tell me, "you need to see this film!" rather than having what is, IMO, a second tier title by a director whose films have been made very accessible.

it also may have to do with collecting preferences. On The Waterfront has been one of my top 10 favorite films of all time. I don't own it on blu-ray yet, despite the fact that my not so trained youthful eyes of yesteryear were able to form the opinion that some scenes were terribly dark on the DVD; overall, the PQ needed improvement. Why don't I own it yet? Because I've seen it maybe 6 or 7 times (that's A LOT for me) and for that reason, owning it has not yet become a priority.

both Lynch and PTA have made, IMO (sorry I have to qualify the opinion part, but I'm trying to keep some of the birds from chirping ), one great film each. one film that can (and has) grow(n) in stature with the passing of time. even by applying the most subjective analysis to PTA's filmography (and H8 has been at or near the bottom of many of the 'top PTA' films that have been listed here in the past 24 hours) isn't it not a stretch to say that the #1, #2, and #3 films of another director might have more to offer?

I don't think it is. Unrelated, but here's a director: Pedro Almodóvar

Mulholland Dr. is the big one for October. That's the headliner.

I just got finished watching my blu-ray of Bad Lieutenant (1992). Wish this film and others by Abel Ferrara were Criterion releases. Such an amazing indie flick.

THe Bad Lieutenant blu-ray is too bright. Ferrara also mentions that on the commentary track.

It's a great film though.

I wish somebody would release The Funeral in the U.S on blu-ray already.

I don't know when y'all started ranking Paul Thomas Anderson films, but here goes:

Magnolia
There Will Be Blood
Boogie Nights
Punch-Drunk Love
Hard Eight
The Master
Inherent Vice

They're all pretty much a 9.5 - 10 for me, except for Vice which is the only film of his I just downright didn't like.

Now here's a question: I'm pretty new to the CC so I don't really know they're relationship with the major studios, but what's the likelihood of CC releasing several of PTA's films in the future?

I know everyone here is gunning for a Hard Eight and PDL release, and I think IV is out of the question since apparently Warner Bros aren't so friendly with Criterion (or that's what I hear), but what about the studios behind his other films like Boogie Nights, The Master and TWBB?

I know they already have some pretty decent blu-ray releases but how AWESOME would it be if it made the collection! I've seen several mentions of an 'Essential Paul Thomas Anderson' collection on some 'dream Criterion' forums, so I was curious about the chances of this ever happening (even if it takes a couple years to come to fruition).

Nevertheless if Hard Eight or PDL get blu releases, day one for sure!

Isn't the phantom page there because of his involvement in the extras for a couple of releases?

Little White Lies have interviewed the director of Jellyfish Eyes, and it's a great read. The film is intended to be a response to the Earthquake and Fukushima disaster in a similar way to how Godzilla was a reaction to Hiroshima.

I hope it gets a theatrical run over here. It's probably not something I'd be interested in buying but I'd love to see it on the biggest screen possible.

Just blind bought City Lights (no pun intended). My kids and I really like Gold Rush and Modern Times. How does City Light rank in Chaplin's films?

That's unlikely - I don't think any other extras contributor has one.

Jellyfish Eyes intrigues me. I went looking for some Japanese reviews, but that proved to be more difficult than I expected it to be. People who I know who have seen it really didn't like it.

It is in the top 10 of AFI's top movies, according to what I remember seeing at B&N. It was also deliberately a silent movie because Chaplin believed talkie technology wasn't very good. He even used the film to lampoon talkies in a very funny scene where someone is giving a speech . It basically sounds like a kazoo instead of intelligible words
