I like the plastic cases a lot for movie storage, although my collection has grown to the point where it's tougher to remember where certain movies are.

In the near future, I'm planning to buy some tape or stickers to label the end of each plastic case for easier categorization. "Film Noir", "Criterion", "Hitchcock", "James Bond", "Western", "1980s Slasher Movies", "Digibooks", "Charles Laughton", etc.

It almost seems like Jules and Jim are reacting to a character like Jean Seberg in "Breathless", who was intoxicating. Jeanne Moreau's performance is solid, but the character does the film no favors. I didn't dislike it, but it was underwhelming, particularly after seeing "The 400 Blows", "The Last Metro" and "Day For Night", which I all thought were excellent.

[Show spoiler]She is so smitten with herself that she sells out Belmondo and turns him in to the police, so you should probably pick a different French New Wave beauty.

The love seen was ok but that wasn't enough to make me wanna keep it or even see it again. I did watch Eddie Coyle earlier & really enjoyed it.

Have to admit, I find her intoxicating too.

And as bad as it is to admit, at least partially I have to say the qualities you stated are part of the reason.

That's how it starts, masking tape and a Sharpie. Before you know it you'll be looking at back-lit shelves, memorabilia, alpha numeric sorting genre, studio, re-makes following originals. Plastic coated cards guests can peruse to make suggestions of what would be interesting to watch; as if that would actually make any difference to what ended up on the screen.

It's a slippery slope.

So my issue with labeling and sorting movies is this: where does Red River go? In criterion? in westerns? or in Digipacks? or in the Howard Hawks section? Seriously thats why I just alphabetize.

I separate my Criterions and order them by spine number.

I have gone through so many different sorting methods that I think I've sort of lost my mind at this point. Right now, they are mostly totally disorganized because I can't decide. My last system was by director, which is what I prefer. The problem is that as my collection began to grow I would find it tough to remember the director's name if it wasn't a famous film or directed by one of my favorites (Godard, Hitchcock, Aronofsky, Fincher, Sofia Coppola, etc.).

And then there's the problem of what to do with the DVDs I still haven't replaced. Like, if I have all my Godard Blus together, then do I add the Godard DVDs I still have, or do I keep them separate in the DVD ghetto?

It's all so damned confusing.

It always starts with "Just this one" and then there's another; only this time it's a couple, then more and more! Soon you'll be watching the calendar for the 15th every month and counting the months to the B&N and Criterion Collection sales!!! It all starts with one and we've all been there. It's a wonderful addiction.

The more Lubezki in the collection, the better. Obviously.

Looks like he's made some sappy, cheeseball, faux-art films to me...

I mentioned something in a previous post, but I'd like to elaborate on something:

Driven by the big love for Il Sorpasso, perhaps my favourite film of my last 10 years' discoveries, I started watching Italian summer films of the 50s and 60s.
Watched around 10 so far.

Of those, there are 2 little gems of similar episodic nature that would LOVE to be released by Criterion.

1) Il Giovedi (1963) by Dino Risi
Very similar to Il Sorpasso, in that we have a "road movie" inside the city, where 2 characters, a father and his son who hasn't seen for 5 years meet various people and develop a relationship with each other.
The father character reminded me a lot of Gassman's character.
if you loved Il Sorpasso, you've got to see this!

TRAILER:

2) La Giornata Balorda (1960) by Mauro Bolognini

A drama film, and a "troubled" one too in that from an initial 102 minute duration, a DVD was released of 77 minutes (PAL) due to censorship. I don't know of any other release. It would be great if the original film could be tracked down and released on Bluray.
Script is by Pasolini just before he became a director himself.
Quote:
Handsome, from rundown suburbs, Roman, aged twenty, unemployed with a child of 20 days and the mother of the latter to support, Davide spends a day looking for work [...]
Inspired by the "Roman Tales" (1954) and "New Roman Tales" (1959) by Alberto Moravia, the film belongs for better or for worse to Pasolini and Bolognini more than to Moravia. The moral of the story is of Catholic cut (absolution in view of the fulfillment of the elementary duties, even if late), but doesn't weigh much because the film has a mild and elegant grace.

TRAILER:

Honorable mention:

Domenica D'Agosto (1950)
by Luciano Emmer

A summer Sunday at the beach, again with episodic nature, looking at various people's stories.

TRAILER:

[Show spoiler]

I waited until evening to place the collection in my truck and transport it, since the daytime temperatures climb into the upper 90s here. Thankfully, the trip only takes about 15 to 20 minutes. You can't see it in the photo, but a bunch of the plastic cases were also in the truck cab, on my passenger floorboard and passenger seat.

Since I have a few days left in the old apartment before I'm entirely moved in, I did keep one case with my recent purchases here, since I'll have time to watch a movie or two during the evenings. I didn't get a chance to watch the Blu-ray of The Killers (1964) last night, but I'm about to start it in a few minutes. I've also got The Black Stallion in the queue to watch this week, but I'm going to wait until I'm entirely moved in before I watch Hiroshima Mon Amour, since that one will demand my viewing it with a clear head (when I'm not focused on real-life stuff, like moving, for example).

Holy Owl that picture made me think of some big scheme to steal those boxes of gold Michael Mann style haha jk jk
