I love all four but Double Life is on another level IMO. White is my fav of the trilogy; a minority opinion.

Anyone getting The Black Stallion this sale? I've never seen it, but reviews are mostly positive. Probably pick up The Killers as well before next week.

Go for that because it's cheaper and will give you a good idea if you'll like three colors.

Yes, I would start with Double Life. It's his most ambiguous film, maybe that's why I find it the most intriguing. It's also one of the most visually stunning blu-ray's I've ever seen.

I don't understand why White gets such a bad rap. I found it equally enjoyable, just had a different tone. On the other hand, most people prefer Red, I would rate Blue higher.

Thanks Will, Aaron and jhiggy.

I'm tempted to go for the trilogy, but my wallet is screaming for Veronique.

Maybe I'll be cheap and get Veronique and if I really love it just bite the bullet and shell out the $40 for the trilogy?

...these decisions are always so damn tough.

I can see that being very common. It's most likely a polarizing film. Either a person gets it or they don't get it. I get it and so do you and plenty of others. It's just hard to convince someone to watch it and then if they do and don't like it, its hard to be their friend... I know , I know, I'm being critical and picky here but I feel if a person doesn't like 2001, they won't like me. Ha.

I'm equally excited for The Honeymoon Killers. Excellent low budget cult film. Shirley Stoler and Tony Lo Bianco are perfect as the title characters. There was a real carousel of directors, including Martin Scorsese, involved with this before it was completed but whatever the problems were the result is a chilling well made film. One of Criterion's little films that I hoped, but didn't expect, to get upgraded. Also happy they kept the artwork.

Un Flic isn't even very good, but if it means another Melville Criterion release, I'm all for it.

The other two have never seen the light of day so far as I know.

Irene Jacob is absolutely irresistible. I don't know what I'm more in love with...her or the film.

2001: A Space Odyssey is a truly brilliant, sublime, superb, spectacular film - and, if I could think of more superlatives to describe this, I would That being said, I agree 100% that this needs to be seen on DVD/Blu on an large HD Widescreen set - minimum - before it can be fully appreciated. My earliest memory of watching the film was as a pre-teen in the early '80's, on a network TV broadcast (pan & scan) & on a sub-par P.O.S. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) set. Was intrigued by the film, but honestly didn't get much out of it due to the poor presentation. Over the years, I watched it on better formats. I think the first time I saw the film on DVD (back in the 200X's) was when I really appreciated this...

Re: Jules and Jim:

Saw Jules and Jim for the very first time a while back. While I can appreciate that the style & tone of the film was innovative for the time period, overall I found both of the male leads to be foolish, clueless, & somewhat spineless, and Catherine to be extremely selfish. Note that I didn't think it was a bad film - I just hated seeing both of the male characters being used by Catherine.

[Show spoiler]Jim was especially clueless: After Catherine pulls a gun on him and he barely escapes from her, he later renews the friendship with her and Jules; and then he gets into a car with her, alone, after he knew she had suicidal tendencies & had attacked him?! It's almost as if he was asking for what happened....what a dumb sh&!...

The first time I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey was in a theater with my dad, back, I'd guess, somewhere around the late 70s. Wow, did that blow my mind. I do remember sitting with my dad in a cafe afterwards, discussing the film.

Lots of new ideas for a 8 or 9 year old.

One of the most fascinating elements of 2001: A Space Odyssey were the iconic ending sequences.
[Show spoiler]I.e., the astronaut seeing himself aging, then as an old man dying in an elegant room, and then he's re-born as a star-child/baby....extremely deep stuff. The whole ending sequence is quite sublime, and has moved me on a level much more than any other film ending I've seen - and I've seen a lot of them...

Anyone know why the special features transferred over from the All That Jazz 20th Century Fox DVD release don't use the music from movie? It's like they couldn't get the rights or something... which doesn't make sense. Anyway, it's just kind of odd when someone is talking about how great a musical sequence is and they cut to it, but there's just generic "musical" music playing over it.

All this 2001 talk has me wanting a good Criterion re-release (although preferably with better-than-usual Criterion compression). One of my favorite films on one of my favorite labels, yes please.

I remember reissue ads and posters with the tagline "The Ultimate Trip" to appeal to the "let's toke up and see..." audience. They also did it with a psychedelic poster for Fantasia featuring dancing mushrooms. Hmmmmmmm!
