Originally released in 1978, Killer of Sheep played at a limited number of film festivals and then quietly disappeared. It was "rediscovered" and shown at Sundance in 2000, after which it again languished unseen for several years. Then it was restored and revived in 2007, again playing the festival circuit, and finally received a theatrical release in the United Kingdom in 2008. Shortly thereafter, Turner Classic Movies broadcast it and the film found a wider audience (which is how I finally caught it). It's well worth seeing, and I think TCM has shown it again from time to time, most recently within the past year.

Any "best-of" film list from the US should include Blade Runner, and many of the others which were mentioned above.

Mocked this up.. not exactly Criterion design but more just a character poster, but gives a good sense of the mood and style they could have maybe gone for without making the artwork look like just a copy of existing posters... I don't know, this may be crap lol

I dig it!! Looks great!

Glad that The tree of Life is in there, and that E.T. (my most favourite film ever) is also there, since I was surprised to see that many here hate or are bored with the film or think that it's only for children!
weird that among animation films, only Lion King is in there, and not Snowwhite or Fantasia or anything else..
Some of the list I agree with 100%...others, I look at the rating and go WTF????

I stopped at my local B&N during my lunch hour and spent 10 minutes or so reading the back of the boxes for the Eclipse series sets that they had in stock.

How do people like the Kobayashi box set? I have to admit that several months ago, when someone said Kobayashi, I thought of the hot dog eating champ. The film descriptions made the films seem pretty accessible. My exposure to Japanese cinema is limited to the half dozen or so Kurosawa films I've seen, so I need something that isn't too political or is a too difficult to grasp social commentary, etc.

So Kobayashi is the perfect fit... 😀. The set is Kobayashi Against the System, after all.

Honostly, it is a great set, but don't know about the "isn't too politial" part of it.

Unless I'm missing something, no new releases from old sale end time to new end time, but still nice to have more time to get what you want, or to hope for more coupons.

I have seven left to get and a gift card in transit so I'll take the extra week.

Hello film/criterion collection lovers,

I am working on recording a podcast where I will be discussing films, film history, film genres, film news . . . . basically everything film. The focus of each podcast will be one film (new or old, English or foreign language, silent or blockbuster, it doesn't matter. Though there will be a slight bias towards the type of films in the criterion collection).

The reason I am posting this here, is I need guests to feature on this podcast. The plan is to get a different guest each episode. I don't care if the guest is a film scholar, amateur critic, indie hipster film snob and self proclaimed cinephile, film school student, or just a casual film watcher. The only requirement is for enthusiastic and passionate film lovers.

If anyone is interested, please send a PM.

P.S. if this is an inappropriate place to post this sorry in advance

You should be alright with the Kobayashi set. The Nikkatsu Noir and When Horror Came to Shochiku Eclipse sets are really accessible.

The video from Anna Catley is informative and fun to listen. I haven't seen an Ozu film and only one Anderson film. Now I want to watch all their filmography.

Not really Criterion related but came across this and I'm sure A LOT of us can appreciate it

Does feature a few Criterion films though! And if you haven't seen them - get watching :P!
