This time around, I did not spend nearly as much as usual during the Barnes & Noble sale. I bought The Killers, The Bridge, The Black Stallion, Le Silence de la Mer, and Hiroshima Mon Amour. After that, I left the sale alone. There is a handful of classic-era film noir movies coming out from Kino Lorber in a week or two, so I wanted to set my budget aside for those.

My haul from this sale is quality instead of quantity, though. The Bridge was a fantastic blind buy, but I'm familiar with the rest of the films, and I love them dearly.
I'm glad to hear that The Bridge is a good blind buy.

I read from some critics that its an overrated film.

I try to avoid blind buys more nowadays because I know I can avoid this if I borrow or rent the film first. Some films I just can't resist and I feel this might be a title I need to just take a leap of faith with. But most of the time its my own fault for not screening the film first, because its foolish to buy a product you aren't sure you're going to like or not (and I've done a helluva lot of blind buy purchases with movies in my life).

I'd be happy with ANYTHING form him added to collection, a Funny Games dual release would be cool ( both versions).

Or the heart breaking Amour.

Kino recently discontinued its DVDs of Code Unknown and The Piano Teacher, so I'm wondering if these are going to happen. Certainly they're gorgeous movies in need of Blu-ray upgrades.

I don't get how a film that hardly "rates" anywhere could be considered "overrated." Other than ranking on a few "historically important German films" lists, I'd hardly ever seen it mentioned anywhere until the Criterion release.

Whatever critics said that need to re-evaluate their gratuitous use of the phrase "overrated."

(Sorry, that was kind of a tangent - not aimed at you but at the critics.)

Anyways, I loved "The Bridge" when I watched it for a German film class a few years ago. It's not a subtle film - and some of the non-professional acting sticks out - but it makes up for it in sheer emotional power, imo. I was very pleasantly surprised to see such a great but relatively obscure film getting a Criterion release.

Last night I picked up Belle de jour, Safe, and My Beautiful Laundrette. That may be the end of my buying this sale, but I may go back and get the David Lean Directs Noël Coward set before the 3rd.

Mine is OK. It might be a contrast issue with your television.

I just bought the Eclipse-Set Late Ozu. Just realized BFI has 2 of the films already out on Blu-ray so what do you guys think are the chances for all of the films in the box to be released on Blu-ray one day?

Probably unlikely. Even BFI seems to have stopped putting out more in their Ozu collection. The Late Ozu set is great, probably my favorite Eclipse series that I own.

A "head's up" for fans of David Lynch (Mulholland Drive). Late into the wee hours on Halloween night, Turner Classic movies will be showing a program of his early short films, including:

The Alphabet (1968)
Premonition Following an Evil Deed (1995)
The Grandmother (1970)
The Amputee, Version 2 (1974)
Dumbland (2000)
The Amputee, Version 1 (1974)
Six Men Getting Sick (1966)

The program is scheduled to run from 1:45am to 3:30am Central Time.

I wish the Color 4 Ozu box set wasn't so expensive at the moment. I hope it goes under a hundred bucks someday since shipping from Japan is also pricey.

I assumed he was talking about the story itself, not the transfer.

Right now it's under $120 shipped from Amazon.jp which isn't that bad. Amazon takes VAT off the price for non Japan based purchasers, which offsets the shipping price (and it comes in like 48 hours usually which is awesome).

The fact that the same guy made Funny Games and Amour makes me laugh whenever I think about it.

I wouldn't mind a Criterion release of The White Ribbon.
