The film has a dreamlike feel not unlike Picnic at Hanging Rock. It also does have a young Jenny Agutter, and a memorable John Barry score. Veronique is one of those films I always end up watching all of when I put it in. It's mesmerizing. Every B&N sale, I can't believe everyone doesn't already own it.

Also, I finished my first viewing of Marketa Lazaorva last night. A real masterpiece.
Great feedback!

...any thoughts on Vengeance is Mine?

That's another one I had on my potential blind buy list.

Walkabout is brilliant, it would easily fall in my top ten. I've rarely been so moved by a film, I really connected with it.

Vengeance Is Mine is a film I never thought would leave such a long lasting impression on me. It's really dark, pitiless, at times disturbing in its depiction of senseless crime and humdrum violence. Maybe you could call it nihilistic.

Can't quite tell if this is an endorsement or not?

However, being a nihilist myself...I must say that I'm intrigued.

It is very dark...I liked the way the film is structured and how it separates itself from routine serial killer/chase movies. One of those which easily surpassed my expectations.

Walkabout is absolutely brilliant. I loved it the first time I saw it and loved it even more the second and third times.

Don't Look Know I have only seen once. I plan to give it another shot, but I had such a bad reaction to it the first time that I'm foreseeing it being traded away. My first big disappointment from Roeg.

This is not just addressed to you, but many people, including myself, who sometimes I think we're trying to like something because many people like it..
I don't often feel that way, but I do on occasion.

There's a saying, "If few people like X, the problem is more likely to be with X; if most people like X and you don't, the problem is more likely to be you." (For the record, "problem" isn't meant to be as harsh as it sounds.)

Now, if there are films that a lot of people like and I don't, most of the time I know exactly why I don't like them (examples: E.T., Man of Steel, or District 9) and don't feel compelled to subject myself to them over and over until I change my opinion.

On the other hand, when I don't happen to like a highly-regarded and popular film -- like, say Gone with the Wind -- I wonder if there's something I'm just missing and that's keeping me from liking it. Films like this I'm inclined to give extra chances to to see if I might discover what it is that I was missing.

I'll end with this: you guys are making this really tough on the old RayJ's wallet.

It may come down to a good, old-fashioned Thunderdome confrontation between Walkabout and Vengeance is Mine.

...not sure I can afford to get both.

Walkabout was one of my first Criterion titles, back in my DVD days. It's an astoundingly beautiful and atmospheric film, and it would make a great triple feature with Picnic at Hanging Rock and Wake in Fright.

I've never heard of Wake in Fright before.

But damn...it has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 46 reviews.

...I'm on it.

Don't worry...Mr. Ebert is here to help you.

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/gr...walkabout-1971

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/ve...e-is-mine-2008

I have watched both only once...I liked Vengeace more...but Walkabout is more universally acclaimed and watched

It's OK man. I'm very affected by it and think it's a masterpiece. That doesn't mean it is. I tend to really get affected by filmmakers that mess with the language of film or "the form". I find Roeg's editing in Don't Look Now to be both perfect for the film and revolutionary for the medium, in much the same way I find Altman's use of sound affecting.

I hadn't heard of Wake in Fright either. I looked it up and it sounds amazing. I will be taking the high recommendations and putting it on my watch list.
