HD Remastered version of The Decalogue by Kieslowski was showed on Polish TV this summer.

Maybe Criterion can get their hands on those

Do you like that kind of cinema? it's one of my favourite films, the release is outstanding, and it has become a Christmas staple for me.

Also I see Days of Heaven, but I don't see The Thin Red Line.
Have you seen it?
Was interested in All that Heaven Allows, but not much of a Rock Hudson fan or stereotypical over melodramatic hollywood fare. Maybe I'll give it a go afterall.

Definitely intrigued about Sundays and Cybele. Especially with Patricia Gozzi in it. Rapture was such a wonderful film. Amazingly underrated and mostly forgotten.

Nope I've never seen The Thin Red Line. It seems to me to be one of those films that tries to be overly poetic which I find pretentious. Maybe I'm way off base. Day's of Heaven is lensed beautifully and well acted, but the narration bothers me. Which I believe is used in TTRL as well.

Odd man Out seems like a safe bet coming from Carol Reed. Though I can imagine James Mason hams it up some. Love Mason, but sometimes he can go overboard. As far as Red River, westerns are a hit or miss with me. Many use the same plots and other then nice scenery don't offer much else, but Howard Hawks was a master.

Think I will go with:
Sundays and Cybele
Red River
Odd man Out

or possibly All that Heaven Allows in place of Red River or Odd Man Out,

No love for Dreyer's Master of the House? Haven't heard anyone discuss the film here and Dreyer to me is one of the best directors ever.

If that'd be the case Rainer Werner Fassbinder surely wouldn't have been influenced by it and its director. The film is actually pretty thought-provoking and subversive.

When they do it's going to be a monumental release. The DVD set from Facets video isn't too bad but I'd love an HD upgrade and more bonus features.

The BFIs Dreyer collection is the way to go for that film on blu though. Hopefully Criterion puts the rest out in U.S. but that set is worth springing for if you're a fan of his.

Also, I'd recommend the Thin Red Line and both Sirk's film and Fassbinder's Ali.

I have become a fan of Sirk after Seeing ATHA and Written on the Wind. – so much so, that I’ll buy just about anything that will be released on Blu-ray that was directed by him. I have yet to crack, however, how it is that he was so subversive. I know that it is a widely held critical analysis shared by many film scholars. I happen to feel (granted only 2 films in,) that he just happened to make colorful, stylish, really good, soapy dramas. I haven’t sensed that anything in the two films I have seen by him is submliminal.

That box is tempting. Just waiting for a significant price drop or as you said Criterion will do their box version themselves. It boogles the mind that Criterion hasn't released The Passion of Joan of Arc or Vampyre either.

Wow that boxset is only £45 and limited. I may have to buy that instead. Already have The Passion of Joan of Arc. Interesting that Vampyr is not on there. I would literally die if they announced a new restoration effort and release for it.

Surely Criterion is trying to get these and release a boxset. Then again the restoration for Passion was years ago and I'm still waiting for someone to release the Hitchcock 9 restoration effort here.

**edit** OK UK has Tales Of Hoffmann as well recently restored. Uh Hello Criterion?

I just finished watching My Beautiful Laundrette and I found it really enjoyable. I can see where some people could be turned off by it, though, but I liked how the film touched on several different and still-relevant topics (racial, social, and generational issues in particular). I also thought it was interesting/great that the two central characters are gay, but that doesn't ever really become a problematic issue for the other characters in the film, which is nice to see. The acting ranged from mediocre to great, and I thought both Daniel Day-Lewis and Gordon Warnecke did well. I was also glad to see that this film was kind of the start of Working Title; I find that I usually really like the films produced by Working Title, and My Beautiful Laundrette is no exception.

If anyone is interested I have a MS Excel spreadsheet with every Criterion title by spine including links to the wiki pages for the films and directors. It has DVD and Blu-rays with OOP movies marked. I use it to keep up with what I have and what I want.

PM me if anyone wants a copy and I can email it.

This is not Criterion-oriented, but listening to Fincher's commentary on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo I realize how much I DON'T know about filmmaking. What a freakin' process! I wish I understood this stuff.

Of course, to make it Criterion-oriented, we need lots of Fincher. LOTS.

That is so funny. I have just such a spreadsheet myself, fully color-coded and annotated. I should have known I wouldn't be the only one! Call us "well-organized".

This may sound ignorant, but honestly how good is a silent film from 1928 really supposed to look?

...I bet the SD Criterion transfer looks as good as the original did on screen during the 20s.

That being said, blu-ray would be cool.

Some of the silent movies on Blu-ray in my collection look as though they were filmed yesterday.

I, like others apparently, also keep a spreadsheet. Pretty funny. It *was* however nice to update last night's purchases and see that I'm now up to date with Criterion Blu-rays (at least until next Tuesday).

I think silent films benefit more then any other films. A lot of these films I've seen a million times and then when viewed in HD,like Nosferatu, I see things I had no idea were in the frame or were hard to make out due to the quality of the film being low and in SD. Plus the grain structure is evident and add's a lot to the ambiance of the film IMO. HD really brings out the details and contrasts. This is really important in german expressionistic films that are layered in shadows and darkness. Also SD (DVD) will never look as good as 35mm.

I wish this would see a Criterion release. Better yet I wish Sony would get off their butts and ok the rest of the trilogy with Fincher at the helm. When movies like this fail in theaters while the biggest grossing film now is Jurassic world it just makes me sad.
