Just did a simple overlay. The boom mike disappears if you restore the bottom of the frame, even without zooming.

I haven't seen the film, though I think it would be far more likely that someone remembered a boom mic in a shot than the actual placement of a title.

Of course the knuckles comment is a joke about the previous assertion that he remembered the exact position of the title.

Shows how very much of the picture you do lose on the side due to the zoom also.

Jeez, looks like those DVDs are trash! Stop drinking the Drain-o!

No I didn't. I posted at the start of my conversation with Ray Jackson that I hadn't seen it - The same post you are replying to.

And I've never asserted that I knew anything because I had seen it, I've just pointed out that it is ridiculous to claim you remember where you saw a title 20 years ago, and that the consensus is that the blu rays don't look like garbage.

Yep, you've managed to change the world's opinion. All you had to do was post that image TWICE!

Well done!

Hey guys, just watched Rififi this morning. It's great!

So I've got this list, and I've already bought a few of the movies on here.
What should I get next? Here's the list (crossed out movies I got):

Persona
Solaris
Umberto D
Rififi
Yojimbo
Throne of Blood
Tokyo Story
Ugetsu
Life of Oharu
Seven Samurai

I was thinking of getting another Kurosawa movie, as I've heard he's more accessible then, say, OzU, but what do you guys think?

You should look at getting the Yojimbo and Sanjuro package. I love it! I prefer Yojimbo between the two of them, but Sanjuro is entertaining as well. I would also recommend Rashomon if you haven't seen it.

Not sure whats on Hulu but some laid back Criterions I would suggest are:

I Married a Witch
Grey Gardens - Just sit back and enjoy the show!
Fantastic Mr Fox
Scanners (I don't think this needs much brain power)
Arrow Films release a lot of fun B horrors that I love to sit back and enjoy as well when I don't want to over think during the film
La Cage Aux Folles is also a fun little film, if your brain is too lazy to digest the subtitles :P you could watch the remake but its not as god IMO.

In regards to the boom in Three Colors - just embrace it, it is part of the film making, I get that it draws you out of the world but as I said embrace it and if it bothers you that much, I suggest you don't watch The Idiots :P

What happened to Binoche's hand in the Criterion transfer?

Of course the image was zoomed. Why would anyone want the boom mic to be visible.

The shot is only slightly tighter and the composition is not compromised.

Any information lost is not important. So it eats into her head a little. The only option to hide the boom.

The zoomed version is most likely how it was shown in theaters.
Incorrect. The image was never zoomed. You can still see the tip of the mic on the previous laserdisc, dvd, etc. But the whole film is shifted low, cutting off information at the bottom and adding information at the top. Even the opening titles are no longer centered horizontally, which they should be.

Its also not Criterion's fault, as the fault lies in the HD masters made in France. They just lied about it being correct, because it's out of their hands to fix it.

Two Days, One Night Blu-ray REVIEW

No need to encourage you to see/own the film. Let's just say that there is a good reason why Marion Cotillard earned an Oscar nomination.

The supplemental features are outstanding. Actually, they are arguably the best produced for a Criterion release this year. If you are interested in the work of the Belgian brothers, you want to have this disc in your collections. The long interview and The Dardennes on Leon M.'s Boat cover pretty much everything, from their early work as documentarians to the political overtones in their work and the evolution of their style

Later today we will post our reviews for Here Is Your Life and Dressed to Kill.

So many better contemporary films that Criterion could have released. Not a big fan of that tone.

The film is excellent. Also, I am unsure if you mean the tone of the film or the tone of the post. If it is the former, it is typical for the Dardennes and their work. If it is the latter, you are probably misinterpreting what is written because the only intention was to highlight the obvious -- the film has been widely covered by the media. In Europe, it received great coverage after it premiered at Cannes. And in the U.S., it received plenty of attention after it earned the Oscar nomination.

I honestly do not think that there is anything that I can say that hasn't already been said.

So weird. I was looking at that film earlier and there was no review posted... now there is. LIFE, HUH?

On another note... for anyone who has seen Ivan's Childhood, I'm going to need your help for just a moment. I watched my copy of the film today and while I really enjoyed it, there was one specific plot point that somehow seemed to go right over my head.

In the third act, when Ivan and his fellow soldiers are using the boat to go into enemy territory, where exactly did Ivan venture off to, and why? Obviously I'm assuming he went behind enemy lines, and was eventually captured... but why? What was the purpose of his mission? Pure revenge? I feel so foolish for possibly not paying attention to any dialogue that set this up, but I honestly don't remember there being any. All I do remember through dialogue is that Ivan was out for vengeance for those who were killed.

What did I miss?

You can't go wrong with Yojimbo, Throne of Blood and Tokyo Story. Haven't seen Ugetsu so can't comment on that one, might very well be great too.

The supposed framing issues were deliberate, in an attempt to recreate the film as close to how it appeared in theaters.

The DVD version has significantly less detail and cinematic feel, and represents the tinkering of those that did the transfer, altering the original and purposeful look of the film. Inferior? Certainly not.
That is absolute bull.
