Default Lost Highway

Whats everyone's thoughts on CC releasing Lynch's Lost Highway. I already own the US Twin Peaks box, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet & Wild At Heart and have Mulholland on order. In my opinion Lost Highway is the last essential Lynch. Inland Empire & Elephant Man would be awesome, dont get me wrong but I'm not dying for them.

I'll give it another chance but like Overlord, on paper it seemed like an automatic thumbs-up but wasn't.
You made me laugh with that spoiler comment. (I get what you're saying too).

A/V wise they should be very close, considering Criterion licensed Arrow's restoration of the film. DVD Beaver has compared the two at their site.

Hey guys,

I hope the mods don't mind me posting this here, but we are launching a Criterion weekly podcast. Figured there would be interest in this thread.

Plus I imagine that some of the posters here will be guests on the show someday.

How could i not love the movie that allowed me to finally answer the question "can I be mesmerized by dancing"?

Yes, the answer is yes.

Amazing movie and one of the ones Studio Canal took away from Criterion for their lackluster attempt with Lionsgate to create a competitive library of great films. Only releasing a few before giving up. ( Le Grande Illusion, Ran, Ladykillers, Le Mepris, That Obscure Object of Desire) It really is a good release overall and worth it just to see the movie in HD. Orson Welles once said this would be the number 1 movie he would take on the ark and was highly influenced by it.

Speaking of which I wish Criterion would get the rights back for the other Ealing Studio films that have already been released in Europe. I have most of them, but just don't understand why there are no region A releases after all this time. I blame Studio canal for holding onto the rights and doing nothing here. (Kind Heart and Coronets, The Man In The White Suit, Lavender Hill Mob, Whiskey Galore, Passport To Pimlico, The Titfield Thunderbolt, & Went the Day Well) All amazingly funny movies except Went the Day Well which has a few surprisingly implied violent scenes for its day. All of them are definitely recommended.

Arguably the most powerful use of music in the history of cinema.

And the
[Show spoiler]death scene at the stake...my god. It was pretty graphic, even by today's standards. It's almost shocking that they could get away with that in the 1920s.
Repeating myself here, but again The Passion of Joan of Arc should be checked out by all cinephiles. You should also check out Murnau's masterpiece Sunrise and definitely The Phantom Carriage which has a Criterion release. The Later Bergman watched over and over for years in his private theater and was a huge influence for him.

Some other silent films that has been restored and released in Europe, but have yet to hit our shores are Murnau's Faust and Lang's Dr Mabuse The Gambler.

The dancing scene was phenomenal, and I don't even mean in the sensual sense (although it was that too), but the contrast in energy between Rym and Slimane. The actress that played Rym was fantastic and I'm pleased to see that her career is going well.

Here was my write-up and I embedded some tweets including one with the dance scene.

Even without that scene Rym (Hafsia Herzi) steals the show. She's terrific.

I'm getting pretty close to acquiring everything I initially set out to get, so any suggestions on what to grab next? (that isn't on my list yet) To clarify: I'm looking for 'world cinema' so, movies that are in another language, shot outside of north america, deal with cultures that are foreign, etc.

I'd like to watch more French movies, or maybe something German or Italian or Spanish. Anything goes, as long as its not Hollywood.

Oh, also, should I get The Fisher King, or The Thin Red Line?
If I could only recommend one release, especially for someone looking into 'world cinema,' it'd be La Jetee/Sans Soleil. But it's divisive.

Also, I'd pick up Late Spring before Tokyo Story, as it's a slightly earlier and (very slightly) better Ozu film.

I give a strong no to the Fisher King, and a strong yes to The Thin Red Line.

I'm not much of your typical 'Arthouse' fan so my recommendations may diverge from the usual Ozu, Godard, Fellini, Antonioni choices, but all are great films by great directors. Big fan of Melville, Clouzot, Kurosawa, Kobayashi, Kieslowski.

Le Silence De Le Mer
Army of Shadows
The Music Room
Battle of Algiers
Harakiri
Ivan's Childhood
Letter never sent
Marketa Lazarová
Pale Flower
Three Colors Trilogy
Diablogue
Wages of Fear
High and Low

I've been wanting to see The Secret of the Grain and have put a chincy bid on eBay hoping it'd slip through the cracks. Artificial Eye also has the film and for anyone region free, it could be had for $12 or less.

It has one of the best looking CC covers, too. I think it was octagon who pointed out the fact that sometimes a slick cover can be a selling point.

Both my wife and I loved Blue is the Warmest Color, so I'll see this soon.

If you like the hyper-intense character exploration of Blue is the Warmest Color then Secret of the Grain is probably up your alley. It is a different sort of minority group though, with Franco-Arabs.

I have not seen Revanche yet, but it is high on the list. My expectations might be too high to be honest.

I like Lost Highway, but I'd kill for an Inland Empire Blu-ray from Criterion (my all-time favorite movie). The only thing Criterion could've done to blow people's minds more than their MD release would have been an "L.A. Trilogy" set.
