Started Vengeance is Mine last night and got about 20 minutes in before there was a power outage in my neighborhood that last several hours.

...talk about cinematic blue balls.

The Third Man (Blu-ray) for 60$ is a no-brainer, right?

Of course, but isn't the market value like twice that amount?

I dunno, the new (so far non-US) release sounds pretty sweet.

The Criterion is great and $60 is a very reasonable for that disc but only if you're shopping for that specific release and not simply for a great presentation of the film.

My copy of this French Blu-ray is on its way to me in the mail.

I upgrade The Third Man like most people upgrade their cell phones. What can I say?

Yeah, the only decision I have to make is which of the new releases I'm going to buy. This one is currently out in front but who knows what the future will bring.

So anyway..... here I was at B&N to spend another $100 on Criterion blu-rays and I would spend more but the crappy Australian dollar doesn't hold up as much as it used too. And then as I was going through the checkout it gave me shipping at the ridiculous price of $45, and that's 45 US dollars.

What the hell happened! Does anyone have any insider information? Despite the sale of 50% it's still not worth it at B&N and I might as well wait for a sale at Amazon. However, I still got a bit of a bargain at B&N when I ordered two box sets individually; The Complete Jacques Tati and 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini and...

But for individual movies it now looks like I'm going to get my Criterion fix via Amazon. Not that there's anything wrong with that......
Go back to the start of the B&N thread. The new website has put the shipping prices to the same as books. Some people have been able to have the shipping reduced back to the original prices but others have been told "tough"

But sadly, it's not Barry Lyndon. It'd be nice to get some extras for that film. WB have re-released it 3 or 4 times and still never given it the treatment it deserves.

And it's in the wrong aspect ratio, too.
Yes, I have the original DVD that was released in the 2001 Stanley Kubrick box set and that is in the aspect ratio of 1.66:1. I believe Kubrick originally intended it to be at 1:77:1 if I'm not mistaken? Well, the blu-ray that was released in 2011 is at 1:78:1, so I'm guessing you want a blu-ray that is at 1:66:1?

1.77 didn't exist as an aspect ratio when Kubrick shot Barry Lyndon, so there's zero way that could be what he intended. He most likely shot it for 1.66 but had to safe frame for 1.85 since that's the way it would be projected in most countries.

What's the scariest movie in the Criterion collection?

I just blind bought The Vanishing and I hope it scares me a little.

...but I have my doubts.

Add me to the list of people who like Sans Soleil. Aw hell, I freakin' love the movie and its meditative nature.

So what's the consensus? Kubrick intended for 1:66:1 or 1:85:1?

I'd have to say 1921's The Phantom Carriage is also scary.

Although I've heard another old film from 1922, Häxan, is pretty scary too, but I haven't seen it yet.

Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone is somewhat scary.

Let's also not forget Kuroneko, Island of Lost Souls, Eyes Without a Face and Kwaidan too.

The Vanishing didn't really scare me for some reason... I just found it somewhat of a tragic story.

Rosemary's Baby and The Innocents are both pretty chilling in their own ways. I don't know that either is scary exactly but they're pretty creepy.

And The Man Who Fell to Earth gives us a serious eyeful of Rip Torn's junk so I'm going to put that on the list too.

I have the new UK box and the new presentation of The Third Man blows away the Criterion in every regard.

I've seen just about all of the Criterion horror titles available. The two titles that shook me the most were Antichrist & Repulsion. The Vanishing is a chilling film, but plays more along the lines of a Hitchcockian thriller.

I definitely think so. It cost $40.00 band new, and is one of the most sought-after OOP titles; I think paying an addition premium of $20.00 over the MSRP is very, very reasonable. I paid significantly more for my copy, but mostly because it came in a plastic Scanovo case rather than a digipak. Great find!

I wouldn't say The Vanishing is The Scariest Movie in The Collection, but I can assure you it's one of the most disturbing ... and yes, it very well might scare you a little. It certainly held me spellbound from the first frame to the last!

The Innocents is probably the scariest movie in the Collection in terms of generating a true sense of unease if one is watching it while alone at home.

The Vanishing is more unsettling in overall terms, though, and its unease factor during the final moments is an incredible payoff.
