Definitely. And without trying to incite a boring discussion of semantics, any films that can elicit deep, subversive feelings of terror and dread like Mulholland Drive must be considered scary.

Only about the cost of a lower end garbage disposal replacement if you install it yourself. No doubt a more enjoyable upgrade.

I hope so! Haha. Since I purchased my first home a few weeks ago, I've already replaced the air conditioning unit and repaired a couple of faucets. Home ownership took a nice bite out of my budget during the Barnes & Noble Criterion sale, but I fortunately already possess the vast majority of the titles that I want in the Collection.

Of course, being able to enjoy Blu-rays without the annoying loud noise of the A/C unit from my former apartment is priceless.

The collection needs more BD films from Shohei Imamura. I do own the ones already released by Eureka MOC. How about a Blu-ray upgrade for Intentions of a Murderer?!

Rewatching that film was a revelation for me. The first time, the overall craziness and themes of the film really overwhelmed me. Now rewatching it, I'm not shocked anymore and I can really appreciate the fact that underneath all the insanity is a beautiful film. The vivid colors, the glow over everything, the awesome soundtrack, and of course the dreamy feeling of the film. Only Picnic at Hanging Rock comes close to House, for feeling like a dream. And in seeing it again, it's really not that crazy. There are fewer silly and crazy things about it, and more beautiful and interesting things.

Which film do you two think is better:

...The Vanishing or House?

The two films are not even remotely comparable. You might as well be asking, "Which fruit is better, steak or lima beans?"

Okay let's put it this way:

If you were stuck on a desert island for the rest of your life with only one of the two films and some mysterious, unexplained and unlimited power source for your HD television and blu-ray player, which film would you choose?

...House or The Vanishing?

PS...steak isn't a fruit.

At least I don't think it is.

The Vanishing is better by a long mile, but House is insanely fun and, as the above poster said, quite beautiful. Pretty much every shot has a different sort of special effect, and, for a pre-digital-effects flick, it's really something else.

Most importantly, it's the perfect film to revisit when you're spending your first night in a townhouse that you just purchased, because its otherworldly visuals and chaotic narrative help to assuage your nervousness about having a 30-year mortgage hanging over your head and having to do all of the repairs yourself.

So my entire haul this sale has been:

Insomnia
Thief
House
Purple Noon
Scanners
Videodrome
Don't Look Now (which I've traded off)
The Friends of Eddie Coyle (traded off)
Kagemusha
Le Samourai (DVD)
Tokyo Drifter
The Devils Backbone
Cronos

And to think I started with just Rosemary's Baby before the sale started lol. I might also pick up The Vanishing & Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion on Monday if my B&N has them back in.

Don't worry, you're not gonna lose the townhouse.

...everybody has three mortgages nowadays.

Just a question from a newbie to the forums...where would I go to trade a Criterion I really didn't like? I'm not sure I want to hang on to The Trilogy of Life (only watched the Decameron of the Three but I was really put off by it). Would still like to try the other two (the ones I've read the books for) but I don't have much hope...I could go to the local trade-in place but they offer a pittance...

Actually, I would choose The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. But since you are forcing me at gunpoint to make a decision between two other options, I would choose The Vanishing, hands down. House is kinky, weird, and fun in a "cult film" sort of way, but I tend to prefer "serious" films (dramas, films noir, thrillers, sci-fi) over what is generally considered to be "lighter fare" (comedies, musicals, animation).

P.S. ... Lima beans aren't a fruit either.

Right here on this website there's a trading forum you might consider:

You're already traded Don't Look Now and Eddie Coyle?

That's interesting.

...I bought those too and I'm trying to sell mine.
