During the non-sale times, B&N and Borders are generally the only stores that have all the Criterion BD and dvd selections on hand. If you do not generally go into those 2 stores during non-sale times, you would see the selection and the customer base is different. The customer that has the money and wants the product right away does not care about a few dollars as opposed to convenience. That is why B&N has been around for so long. Borders is succumbing to the coupon game and will be gone soon.
For books, not movies. And you are making many unfounded claims. I'm not even frugal and I can promise you out of all my friends, some young, some old, some wealthy, and some doing just enough to get by, NONE of them buy DVDs or Blus from B&N save the occasional sale because its widely known their prices are terrible.

I found this out during the sale last July when I was helping the B&N employee label all of the Criterions as 50%-off. Every duplicate she found, she would remove it from the shelf.

I think that rule has changed for this sale. All of my local B&Ns have been replenished at least once and have around two copies out of everything + display caps or counter caps. According to the employees I somewhat talk with its doing way better than the XMAS sale so corporate is making sure the stores are being restocked and the shelves are plentiful. Again, this is just in my area, though as I can;t comment on the rest of the nation.

The only store I've seen list for more than MSRP is Best Buy.

A couple of months ago Monsoon Wedding Blu-ray(in-store) was going for $43.

In fairness, most of the titles are $30 at B&N save the inexplicably overpriced oddity like Monsoon Wedding.

I'm saving my way to the poorhouse!

This morning's order from B&N:
Battle of Algiers
The Night Porter
Science is Fiction
Friends of Eddie Coyle
White Dog
Homicide
The Diary of a Chambermaid

And there's another 7 I'm thinking of ordering tomorrow, expensive - but at these prices I can't resist.

First off, I didn't mean to imply you are frugal, that's my fault. Honestly, B&N has been selling dvd's for a long time and have had the same MSRP prices for years. They sold them at those prices because the membership (a mere 10% off) was what people wanted and kept them loyal. They have a sense of belonging to the group, hence paying those prices. Remember, Best Buy or Walmart has been around for a while too, but never has any kind of selection of CC or foreign discs for sale. B&N has been your only stop for these titles. Now with the internet, coupons and sales have diluted what a store really is. B&N has bucked the trend and mostly decided to keep the 'boutique' brand they are famous for. They have the bi-annual sale, just like most designer boutiques do. They are not after the 'frugal' customer, and never have. This is their business model. My point is that and their need to make coupons usable is moot to them, hence taking them away after the first day. They are not trying to make themselves look like a discounter by offering coupons, because frankly, they don't have to. BTW, sorry I got off topic, but I call it how I see it.

I think most of us here on bluray.com agree with you. Very few of us pay full price for our movies. I think you're just getting the back-backlash for all the people that automatically come on these threads and crap on B&N or Borders for their bad everyday prices. No one here is saying they're fantastic on a day to day level, but you factor in the deals, coupons, books, cd's, coffee/food and it's a decent store that occasionally has great deals.

To sum it up: Quit *****ing!! You're getting Criterions for under $20. If their business model sucks that bad, then they'll pay the price eventually. Most of us are educated bluray consumers. A place like B&N takes advantage of both educated and non-educated consumers.

I picked up Black Narcissus this morning. My B&N had 1 copy each of BN and Red Shoes (on the floor, at least).

They have yet to replenish their stock of Criterion BDs since last week when many of their BDs were sold.

And in fairness I'm not complaining. They can do whatever they want and I'm more than happy to take advantage of the sale (the Leopard for $22 including tax and shipping is a steal and then some). I was talking to the larger point of retail corporations who rely on coupons and sales to move items instead of selling the items at a fair price on a year round basis. And yes, I'm somewhat of an economy/business nerd and most analysts find this exclusive coupon based membership approach as archaic and not long lasting. The nook is what is keeping B&N alive right now.

Thelma Schoonmaker has to like it, her husband directed it. You don't have to be a ballet fan at all to appreciate The Red Shoes. The ballet is the setting, not the story. ( although there is a pretty long ballet sequence in the middle of the film)

What was the hassle??? Certainly it wasn't the ship time.... the sale went live 7/13 maybe 7/12, so if you ordered it the day the sale started, it got delivered in 7 or 8 days...... if you wanted it that bad, you would have bought it at full price on release day........

Was it the use of coupons/codes??? certainly the effort of that is well worth the huge deal for these.......

I picked up By Brakage today, was hoping to pick up The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus but the manager had to order them. No big problem this is like the 10th movie I've picked up in this sale

I have placed 4 orders from the B&N sale. One shipped on the 13th and another shipped the 15th. I received both orders yesterday (7/19/10). I just received an e-mail confirming that my 3rd order, placed 2 days ago, has shipped. My only gripe is that my pre-order of The Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes placed on 7/13/10 has still not shipped.

Come down in price, meaning what? The only way it's gonna drop significantly is another sale like the current B&N sale. Unless, you jump on the discs as soon as Amazon puts them up for $27.99 then you're not gonna find them going too much lower, unfortunately. The occasional online retailer (Deep Discount, etc.) may have them for around $26 or so.

the Leopard even on B&N 50% sale was $25 >P

i remembered that amazon prices during the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010 were around lower $20s instead of mid $30s.

I just ordered Pierrot le fou from Criterion's website. I'm thrilled it's still there, but I'm curious, why? Didn't it go out of print like three months ago? It was at a good price too, $26.96 (w/o shipping). They're not gonna send me an e-mail a couple of hours from now saying the title is no longer available, are they?
