Does the Criterion site sell case and art for any title like they do for The Last Metro or The 400 Blows?

I've noticed my case and art for A Night to Remember is messed up and I kinda want to replace it. I honestly don't know how it happened no one touched it and it wasn't like that when I bought it a few sales ago

Near?

Trying to watch Jellyfish Eyes but the copy has no subtitles, but from a visual point of view, it comes across as a very cheap production - I have seen better looking TV films/shows. Hoping when subtitles are added it will improve the experience. But this does feel like a film made for TV (some are great but this feels like the poor version).

Not loving the soundtrack either - sounds like music ripped from some fantasy computer game, and not a good one D: I will give it a proper try when I'm in mood and have subtitles lol but yeah... :/ I like the name of the film though *shrugs*

I guess a positive is the fight sequences are fun and interesting to watch, but thats as far is it goes really.

Maybe it will be a good film for children to get them into the Criterion collection XD lol

I honestly can't see a valid reason for Criterion adding this to collection, other than the director being big for his art, which for me is a silly reason. Who knows, maybe the story is incredible and I am just missing that part.

Could only get a small haul for this sale but Im stoked on the ones I did get!

[Show spoiler]20150803_102518.jpg

Got these while in LA (also featured is my haul from Amoeba).
Was going to get Cries And Whispers but I could hear the disc floating around inside and got High and Low instead. Funny thing is, when I opened it the disc flew out
Havent seen Le Silence yet but its Melville so I know its going to be great.
Going to watch High and Low first though as its noir season!

My list would be

1. Sunset Blvd
2. Double Indemnity
3. Stalag 17
4. Major and the Minor
5. Ace in the Hole
6. Some Like it Hot
7. The Apartment
8. Avanti
9. The Lost Weekend
10. Witness for the Prosecution
Great list! And yes, The Major and the Minor is delightfully subversive! It's a movie Lubitsch might have made, since he was so fond of presenting characters who aren't exactly what or who they appear to be.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never seen Avanti!, although I own the DVD. I'm going to have to unwrap it and watch it, based on your ranking. I wish I had a little more love for The Lost Weekend; although I respect its place in film history and admire the performances, particularly those of Ray Milland and Frank Faylen, I think the script is a bit weak and the resolution a little too pat. Some unforgettable moments, for sure!

Oh, I hear you. It took several false starts before I got all the way through The Third Man for the first time. And when I finally did I liked it but didn't really see what all the fuss was about. And then the next time I watched it I totally loved it.

Who knows why?

(and yeah, EGR steals large swaths of the film. I like the two leads just fine but EGR is a force in this one)

They're cherry-picking quotes from that thread and The Scanners thread. Criticizing "the other site" is common on lot of forums. It's like ripping the local news rag - it's fashionable.

The site that's taking jabs at this site is actually a very good forum. I won't hold comments from a select few against the whole site as I enjoy going there.

Yup, and taking shots at outsiders is always fashionable cause you can't have insiders without outsiders.

In the words of the immortal Opie Taylor "we gotta keep somebody out or it ain't a club'.

I know that film is a visual medium, but you can hardly judge a film based on an unsubtitled copy.

But it's worth pointing out that the Criterion Collection doesn't claim to be for 'good' films but 'important' ones. Being Takashi Murakami's first film is a good enough reason to satisfy that criteria

I get that, but there are many films that work without the dialogue and you can get a pretty good idea of how the films works. I find it pretty easy to follow a film without having dialogue, most films visuals speak for them selves - this one was just painful to watch.

But my main point is clear without needing subtitles, the film looks and feels like a cheap tv film for kids with a poor soundtrack. I am not only one that thinks this as on RT it is at 25.

I will try it again with subtitles to get a sense of the story, but other reviewers have faulted the story telling for this film.

Also the last point you made isn't good enough, this is not an important film - its very forgettable. Just because Saul Bass, Matthew Barney etc made great film coming from an art/design background doesn't mean all artists are great film makers. The only skills from his background that shows in the film are his character designs for 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S'.

If you want to talk about the film, talk about the film.

But beating this 'it has no place in the collection' drum gets tiresome.

The Blob wasn't an important film. Neither was Charade. Or Eating Raul or Hausu or Frances Ha.

So what?

It is okay to share one's opinion but bashing one film with over 20 posts is overkill. We already know what you think about the film.

Seriously... I made one post with my opinion after a viewing and the other was a response.

I love how others are allowed to fill this place up with repetitive posts and include their opinions but whenever I do it or even post to share something that amy be of interest I am just ignored and told to pretty much shut up and go away.

Fed up of it.... cant be bothered anymore, you guys enjoy your little conversations and whatever and I'll just sit back and watch.
